well apparently 600 of us are moving there each week, does anyone here know much about it? will youse (in the future)? i personally don't think i would, 'cos i think it'd be easier to become a well-known musician here in NZ - but you hear about heaps of NZ bands moving there 'cos they wanna make it big and apparently NZ isn't big enough

Youse is not actually a word - it's more like an indicator that you're a complete redneck idiot, but I guess your many, many, many, many posts on your views and aspirations (i.e. you're a christian, you want to be famous, yes we fucking get it now JC) kinda illustrate the point beautifully.
I hate your use of language even more than I hate your religious diatribes.
Come on man, although the use of ...
Come on man, although the use of "youse" is extremely irritating to me also, JC, RH or whatever his name is wasn't banging on about either religion or his own desires to be a famous musician. I thought is was quite a good topic question! I fail to see how this is so offensive?
Fair call on the religion thing at this ...
Fair call on the religion thing at this point, though I have no doubt we'll be hearing about it in the very near future....just kinda makes me sick that JC's sole reason for coming back to music is to spread his religion like a virus - this is the guy who only months ago decided that music wasn't worthy of him and was a trivial pastime that was distracting him from the main event - persuading people to become christians.
He's not interested in actual music - for example you can see from his recent, incredibly ignorant comments about "awesome hip hop bands" that he really is less interested in music than the general public, let alone people who are actually passionate about making art. We've also seen this from his comments about "pop" bands and "rock" bands etc etc not long ago - most of the bands cited by him having made their last albums five to ten years ago! Here is a guy who has a totally simplistic, ignorant understanding of everything he purports to be interested in - music and politics seem to be his two favourites, though after numerous intellectual beat downs he actually backed off on the politics thing. His interest in music extends only to wanting to convert others to his line on how best to live one's life, and for that reason it's difficult for me to want to give him the time of day on any subject. At this stage, I couldn't give a fuck what he thinks about anything at all - he has clearly demonstrated that he's not capable of considering anyone else's view anyway, and treats the whole "forum" thing as a soapbox for his unique brand of bullshit. I think we've collectively given him many opportunities to see the error of his ways and consider being a bit more open-minded, but at this stage I fail to see why anyone humours him anymore.

man, can you not see how ignorant and judgmental your post there just was? i have a great appreciation for music and i still definitely believe in right-wing policies as being the best, what the heck do you mean "shot down" i'm up for a debate anytime

I think a major reason to move is that ...
I think a major reason to move is that a lot of our music, whilst being awesome, is more niche market music. Oz has more people therefore a bigger niche market. Theres the big fish in a little pond syndrome in NZ and in this little pond, the edge & c4 (canwest) dicate who the big fish are. This is why you won't hear of bands like Connan & the Mockasins, Kill Surf City...(I would go on but just look at any "a low hum" tour for examples) on commercial radio or TV. Theres really not enough space. Its a pity that the lowest common denominator is always catered for. This is why Elemeno P, for example, is pushed whilst many other more cerebral and interesting bands are not. This isn't taking away from Elemeno P, they write catchy, simple fun songs that everyone can sing along to. But they're the big fish, and theres only so much space in this lil' pond.
Besides, melbourne is an artist's mecca
mmm interesting, i always thought that ...
mmm interesting, i always thought that because there is a current "niche" market in NZ it would be easier to stand out as a new band if you played different music to them, whereas if you were in AU there would be more competition and would be harder to stand out because more other bands will have the same genre of music as you
do you think ToTC are moving to AU someday?
Well, its easy to stand out in NZ, but ...
Well, its easy to stand out in NZ, but not many people get to hear the awesome NZ stuff because the stations everyone listens to and NZ on Air requirements have a set idea of what music should be like. Usually its a poor-mans version of whatever was popular in the US a year a ago. Like my gutarist was saying, you'll never hear the Mint Chicks or Phoenix Foundation on anything other than B Net...You can stand out all you want, the less mainstream you are, the less people will like you. I think that as long as you realise and embrace as a band that some people will hate you, you'll be ok. Competition breeds better music, more opportunites to play, more moolah and more people liking you. Just because the niche is bigger I guess, and it might have radio stations devoted to that market, you get your music heard by more people.
Tragedy of the Commons are thinking of moving to either melbourne or vancouver within the next 18 months. We'll see what happens, we want to do what we can in NZ, theres just not much market for us. Thanks for asking :-D
Why stop at Australia? Why not go ...
Why stop at Australia? Why not go somewhere else? Some NZ bands have previously enjoyed success in Germany; Asia offers huge markets...
The paths from NZ to Australia, the UK or the USA are well beaten; why not show a bit of imagination and take a path less travelled?

If the band is metal, then I dont think moving to aussie will be any help. Your only choice would be Europe.
The language barrier isnt as big an obsticle as you would think (not in centeral europe anyway).

The biggest obsticle, in my opinion is that gourps like Elemeno P & Deja Voodoo will get booed off the stage. They just dont have an attraction to a majority of Europeans. If you arent EMO, you dont listen to Emo music. Emo culture isnt as big in Europe as in is in Aussia/US. (no offence)

//If the band is metal, then I dont think moving to aussie will be any help. Your only choice would be Europe.
Totally. Metal bands that Ive seen move to Melbz have no real places to play... they dont last too long
... there are a few venues that would cater, every other venue turns their noses up at metal generally... its more about rock here. Brisbane is another story tho... queenslanders love metal.... but the live scene isnt great up there.
Metal - central and northern Europe
Cheesy pop/rock - London
mainstream alt - USA
Phat and mean Rock - Melbourne.

australia is more open to different type of music.

I'd like to hear one of your songs, could you provide a link or give us some of the lyrics?
thank you for being my friend i don't ...
thank you for being my friend
i don't want you to feel sad with everything
what do you feel sad about, will you tell me?
i pray that you been keeping well
that's what friends are for
you remind me of why i was allowed to place my life
in God's hands, in the first place
remember to look after yourself
don't go too far, and risk your life
'cos life is special
i know yours is
i admire you lots too
God still loves you, whatever you do
pray that you're taking care of yourself
have a beautiful time, being alive
'cos you're beautiful too
in God's eyes
stay beautiful inside
**
i wish i could go back just to see you now
just to see how your life had turned out
but does it really matter anyhow?
'cos it's not like you've ever needed me around
i wish i could've told you the truth
but what good does it ever really do?
when i don't even deserve you
i sit near the table where you used to lie
and thought of all the times i let go by
you deserved someone so much better than me
thought of all the resolutions that we made
how you'll forget them, the way you're forgetting me
guess that's what you do
forget about all the people that you knew as time goes by
thought of all the promises that we made
the way you'd break them, the way you're breaking me
that's why i never have much faith in myself now
how could i, if i couldn't even keep the one friend true to me?
**
i felt so safe back when you had stayed
it's been like that ever since then
i believe that God never goes away
i wish i treated you good back then when you were still
innocent like that
be good to yourself, you don't have to feel that way
if you keep safe
it means a lot that you tried to be my friend
i know that you tried your best
**
unless someone really cares
nothing ever gets better
you'll never know though
perhaps that's what the Lord would do
bear through longsuffering
why though?
i wish you appreciated me now
is a life really what it takes
and when people move on
they don't think about you anymore
used to tell me about that
used to tell me about you
how come you don't seem to like to talk to me now
is it because you don't like me now
unless someone looks out for you
the joy of the Lord is my strength
doesn't mean a thing
and on this journey that i'm on
one where you were once close by
but never there anymore
i don't know what else i can do to hold on
if you've given up on me
i can't keep up anymore
my faith is dying
if i walk this journey
not knowing whether or not you'll be there in the end waiting
because if the way you're treating me now is how you really feel
how can we be in the same Heaven
would you treat me like i'm nothing there too
and silently i pray
please don't give up on me
are you still there?
i pray you're able to stay strong
on the journey that you're on
thank you...
thank you

eh? Yeah right!
Ive been in Melbourne for 5 years... and its takin this long to get a real feel for the place, and feel like Im starting to make a mark here as a musician..... its a big place (big crowded pond) that requires patience. It was not easy in the slightest at the beginning, for me, or many other kiwi musos here. Its a totally culture shock. And it fucking frightening to leave home! Leaving everything you know behind.
..... so many kiwis move here, its not a gimmic anymore to be an "overseas" band.
We definately don't get watered by anyone...
we have to sometimes work a little harder to compete with the local bands all ready here, who have lived here since birth and have a larger network of friends to support them.
We kiwis tend to support each other a lot... we don't get any support from NZ .... some would even call us traitors, and wankers, for wanting more out of our music careers.
Basically... theres SHIT LOADS of venues and HEAPS MORE PEOPLE come out to live music without harst judgement..... They enjoy and appreciate live music more it seems.....
I won't be coming home to live until I want to settle down... there too much going on here..

Purrrrrsonally, NZ is a pretty special ...
Purrrrrsonally, NZ is a pretty special part of the planet, and the prospect of lower income tax/higher incomes in the land of Oz doesn't interest me in the slightest, despite Dr Brash plastering it all over billboards... I'm proud to call NZ home.
As for re-locating for your music, a lot of things would need to preceed that:
1. Deciding that there's no opportunity in NZ to do what you want to do at the level you want to do it at.
2. What sort of market do you have in Australia? How have you evidenced this?
3. The logistics of the move itself & a cost-benefit analysis.
Or you could throw caution to the wind and just do it anyway. If you've been thinking about going in the first place, and Australia offers you no more opportunites than NZ has, you'll still be living in a country which you like better anyway, right? Or you could look for better odds in an even bigger country like the UK or the USA?
//Or you could look for better odds in ...
//Or you could look for better odds in an even bigger country like the UK or the USA?
Do you know how much it costs, to move an entire band to UK, or the US? These are good places to tour... if you can afford it.
Moving to Aus is cheaper... and Ive been told Melbourne has more live music venues than New York or London... apparrently...
The big irony with Brash's comments is ...
The big irony with Brash's comments is that the reason most friends of mine cite for the higher wages etc. (at least in Melbourne, where I was for 4 years) is that it's due to unionism!
I've never seen evidence of tall poppy syndrome in NZ, maybe I don't know any talented people. But of course in a much larger population you have a larger (but not disproportionate) audience for more unusual music. Sometimes that allows certain events or scenes to reach a critical mass that they wouldn't in New Zealand.
The people I know who find New Zealand too small just make albums and get them distributed / signed overseas, then see if they can get funding to tour as required. But for those doing electronics / noise there's not the "no live gigs = no sales" issue most other genres have.
