Don't buy the new issue of Rip It Up Magazine. There is so much wrong with it I don't know where to start.
Okay, I guess the decline has been obvious since the format changed, but with this DEC/JAN issue, they've really made it obvious they're not worth reading anymore. We get all the advantages of the new tryna-be-Q-magazine style, with its hard-to-enjoyably-read bigness and its gigantic advertisements (page after double page spread) with absolutely bullshit articles.
By all means, steal the free CD (Phoenix Foundation, Carriage h, Marineville etc, 13 tracks) but DON'T give them your money.

Well if you think thats bad have a look at the latest RE-MIX mag, 10+ pages of nameless people in effortless fashion. The free CDs are all good, I've never read RIU before......
(maybe NZMUSIC.com needs a mag.....unless they already have one?)
that would be soooooooooooooooooo ...
that would be soooooooooooooooooo cool...... what a fuckin awesome idea mowgli.
any thoughts from the nzmusic staff? i know it's not gonna spring up overnight but maybe a long term plan?
i dont think i would trust anyone to write a music mag as much as i would trust teina, dust and the crew...... it would make the internet site a lot more well known as well
i guess the only downside would be if the mag sucked, it'd be such a let down.
ah well, heres hoping.

More reasons: They do a HUGE piece on ...
More reasons:
They do a HUGE piece on "top 10 Divas" who include Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Kylie Minogue. I mean what the fuck? They're not musicians! Isn't this Creme magazine's territory? The only passable entrants are Kelis (who gets half a page compared to Kylie's 2) and PJ Harvey (backcatalogue reviews rephrased, and an old interview reused).
Ploughing bravely further into teenybopper territory with a glowing live review of Robbie Williams (so they DO like him, no wonder he was on the cover a few months ago...) and a new "shitpop" section in the album reviews where the Backstreet Boys "best of" is given 4 stars ("damn fine selection of tunes..." they say).
And while they have huge "title pages" for their shit little articles, when they have something interesting to print, eg Tortoise live photos, it's all small and hard to see clearly. And while much space was wasted on "celebrities" as mentioned earlier, actual musicians like Jurassic 5 and System of a Down have to share a page, with their comparatively tiny articles. And there's another Anika Moa interview. Though she just did one last issue.
Various other articles/interviews sound like they were written by journo students rather than by people who like/know anything about music - this includes the bafflingly pointless article on the Smashing Pumpkins written by the editor. Toady will buy it, there's a bit on Blindspott, even a photo, and they're all dressed in their little uniforms and they have their "crazy" contact lenses that he loves so much.
And the "top 50 albums of the year" does not include any of the following: Meterman, Pluto, Jakob, Dayone, Slim, you get the idea. It does include Anika Moa, SJD, Dimmer, Che FU, Goodshirt... pridictable, no? Oh, it also includes Rotor+, the Avalanches and Powderfinger - all of which were released last year I'm sure. And it also includes Linkin Park and Destiny's Child, which just says so much I feel.
Notice how many hip-hop CDs there were ...
Notice how many hip-hop CDs there were in the top 50, despite the fact that they allocate no space whatsoever to anything hip-hop? Retards.
That Smashing Pumpkins thing read like it was based completely on the viewing of one doco (the one coming up on M2?). Yeah, good journalism - watching TV. I wish I could do that.
Oh wait, I do. BURN.
I'd like to know who exactly is going to buy it now?
12 year old girls only have so much money, and won't they spend all their money on Creme and Dolly? And there's Real Groove for anyone with good musical tastes.
They're trying to be everything at once, and the result is worse than the time my mum knee'd me in the bollocks.
(Yeah, I bought it. Never again though, never again...)
And the fact that they mentioned - ...
And the fact that they mentioned - AGAIN - the fact that Dillinja's music has made people vomit.
Snore. So that's what, about 8 times in two issues? Yeah, good going.
Keep that quota up.
Because as we all know, people don't actually read magazines, they just look at the HIP FUNKY pictures.
What infuriated me is that in their ...
What infuriated me is that in their Smashing Pumpkins "tribute" section they gave their album "Adore" a measly two stars. Yeah, I remeber when it was cool to bash "Adore", but I find it to be an excellent album. I bought it the day it came out and till listen to it from time to time.
I know to each his own, but that snippit on "Adore" came across as jumping-the-bandwagon bullshit. Some top quality journalism my arse.
Sorry for that, just needed to get something off my chest.

More:
Remember the "list of banned songs" email which did the rounds after Sep 11th? And how it turned out to be fake the day after? And how RIU (and Real Groove) printed it anyway? Well RIU have done a follow-up article because noone told them it was just a dumb hoax! It's this selfrighteous rant on how America overreacts and how overbearingly eager they are to censor everything, and boy it's so unintentionally hilarious because the joke's on RIU again, they are dumb.
And as for that "Idiot's Guide to Dance Music" I've read that before in a previous RIU (I'll find it, post the month/year)! What cunts they are to just recycle an old article which wasn't funny to begin with a few years ago.

Quotes from that very link:
"The songs range from rock anthems such as AC/DC's "Shot Down in Flames" and Stone Temple Pilots' "Big Bang Baby" to oldies such as the Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" and Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party." Other, less obvious songs on the list include Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York," Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone" and Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
"Adam Raspler, co-manager of 311, whose "Down" is on the list presumably because the song's title could imply airplanes or buildings coming down..."
"Buchmann said the roster has had no impact on his playlist or that of most classic-rock stations he has talked to. Classic-rock songs on the list include Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," Kansas' "Dust in the Wind," Elton John's "Rocket Man" and Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire."
"VH1 has ceased playing Staind's "Fade," Dido's "Thank You," U2's "Elevation," Gorillaz's "Clint Eastwood" and Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" because the clips contain explosions or buildings crumbling. Afro Celt Sound System's "When You're Falling" and Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris," which both feature people falling, have also been pulled."
WHAT THE F...?!! This is sad, sad, sad.

oh yeah and Incubus had to change the start of the video clip for "wish you were here" because the screaming fans looked too much like people running when the buildings collapsed. I think we got the original version.

America's going over the top with this terrorism thing - I mean, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Rocketman"?! These songs are cleary NOT about blowing things up! The former song is about friendship and the latter is about a confused astronaut a la "Space Oddity" (why not ban this one too while you're at it)! Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York"? Or videos - "Iris" shows people falling - so what? Or Dido's "Thank You"? Shit, this is almost too surreal.

although i have read (on incubus' site even) that they had to postpone the 'real' video because brandon boyd's (vocalist) ears were popping from jumping in and out of the water tank all day.
i don't know which is true, but maybe what you heard was a rumour?

im pretty sure it said in spin magazine (feature article) and on incubus' site that brandon got bung ears so they had to postpone the proper vid.

Has anyone actually visited the web ...
Has anyone actually visited the web site of Clear Channel (the radio network said to be behind the list of the banned songs) to see what their take on it is? I reccommend reading this press release, dated 18 September:
http://content.clearchannel.com/corporate/article/NationalBannedPlaylist...
(It's a PDF file, so you'll need Acrobat Reader to view it).
The press release states, "Clear Channel Radio has not banned any songs from any of its radio stations."
Also of interest is this page from the Urban Legends Reference Pages:
http://www.snopes2.com/rumors/radio.htm
They say that the list was compiled by a few program directors as a list of songs that stations may haved wished to avoid playing in the days following 11 September. The list existed, but there was never any ban placed on those songs - it was merely a list of suggestions of what might not be appropriate to play.

Ah, I have fond memories going down to ...
Ah, I have fond memories going down to the dairy and buying RIU for $2.95. It wasn't the flashiest rag around but it had good articles and was great value for money. Then all of a sudden, they adopted a more magazine-style format - which cost almost double the price, but still had its fair share of quality articles (Nick Goldwater's jokes page was my fave), and now - whoooop, they change format yet again. I agree that now RIU's a Q magazine try-hard with its glossy photos and tries-to-be-highly-inforamtive-and-clever-but fails stories. That despicable divas section ain't worth nothing 'cept for loo paper, and even that's being generous!
I know about all those commercial pop articles - RIU never used to be like that. I'm reminded of the USA edition of Rolling Stone Magazine - in its heyday it was the world's premier rock journal. Now it's MTV on paper, with the Backstreet Boys (-cringes-) named "Best Artists of 1999". GRRRRRRRR!!!! Oh well, at least we still have Q and MOJO (which is brilliant).
Why do we kiwis have to look "elsewhere" for inspiration? Must our mags, radio (which station I wonder? -hint-hint-) and even our homegrown TV shows (remember the atrocity that was "City Life") be bad imitation British/American? Come on, let's be original and stop aping other supposedly "better" cultures.

I got the new RIU, mainly for the kiwi music cd, as i like marineville, but you're right. the magazine has gone from bad to worse. I think i'll stick to real groove, especially as key music give the old issues away free :-). maybe it's true- writing about music is like dancing about architecture.

I didn't think Dillinja was that bad...If NZMUSIC had a mag I would be just about NZ music, theres plenty of different sfuff and it's been around, NZ music culture is as big as it ever was. Some mags (RIU, RE-MIX) preach the fact that they know what NZ music needs but really it's just so they can increase the hype for their own mag in the market.
I'm %100 in favour of a NZMUSIC mag.
"Viva la Risistance"
"I didn't think Dillinja was that ...
"I didn't think Dillinja was that bad"
Assuming that was in reference to my comment...
The small amounts of Dillinja I have heard have been very cool. The problem I have is with RIU repeating the same five facts over and over again. It's obviously geared at readers that only buy the magazine once a year, because their information is always the same from issue to issue. They reuse EVERYTHING. Look at that article about music harming people. Look at all those "celebrity facts". Are there ANY there that you hadn't read before? In fact, did that entire issue tell you anything you didn't already know?
They do this in the reviews as well. Hardly any of the reviews tell you anything about the actual album, it's all interest-angle crap. Who the fuck cares if Sigur Ros comes from Iceland, if their music sucks, it doesn't matter at all. That's all I want to know.
And their seemingly limitless synonyms for Bjork being an "Icelandic pixie/nymph/princess/pornstar". This issue's edition: "whisp".
Yeah, great journalism guys. You could be replaced by a thesaurus.
They're just recycling old facts. And it's really boring reading. Booo.
If that was in reference to some other thing, never mind.

i reckon instead of 'hiring' people, there should be an address that you can send your articles, rumours, rants and raves etc to. that way, there's no real deadlines to miss and pressure to get something done. and the stuff would probably have to be quality to get in, so people would be kept on their toes if they wanted to make the mag.
another thing, there would be soooooo much controversy by what was printed in this magazine, i reckon there would have to be a seperate site or forum or something for the magazine issues on here, cos otherwise this whole space would be bogged down more than it already is.

Hey Stefan,
This hasn’t got anything to do with RIU or "anything to do with anything" (Mr F Black) but I just checked your site out and the song "sunlightsmile"…………………crazy.
Anyway, you said that you were listening to Refused at the moment well I don’t know if you’ve heard of "TEXT" before, but text is Refused minus Dennis Lyxzén (lead singer) which fell to bits cos of some crazy sXe stuff, anyway check them out here:

P.S. also check the host site out "buddyhead" its bomb.
