Forums: NZ Music,

Here we go:

Clayflower: Steve Wells, Andrew Bain, Danny Adams, Cam Packer

Gnarly: Andrew Bain, Cam Kneale, Danny Adams, Cam Packer.

I went to school with these guys. Flatted with Cam Kneale's sis. Saw them at Heretic, the Basement and all over. Still got their cassets knocking around. :o)

Did you know that Clayflower used to be knows as Sour Cream and Chives? Then, The Chives?

I don't normally click on these "SEE MY BAND!!!!!" links, cos they're normally shit, but this one caught my eye (OK, ok, it was the S-word that did it). So I had a look at Svelte's website and not only is it well-designed and well-written, enjoyable, but the music I downloaded sounds good. I especially like "Grind your bones" because it's so dirty and sexy and grown-up and pre-apocalyptic. Nice one, lads.

There was a band called Svelte made up of Fur Patrol members too. Pick a new name!

*nitpick* I think you'll find that the Svelte you are speaking of pre-dated Fur Patrol and only contained one member... there have also been 1 or 2 other 'Svelte's" round NZ previously too..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svelte

"Svelte is an alternative rock style geek band made up of Dave Shumka, Gary Russell, Kerry O'Donovan, Martin Danyluk, and Pete Reinhardt. Some songs are irreverent (The Five Alive Song), some are injokes (Flying With Jackson), while others are blunt criticisms (Shoe Girl). They have released two CDs, Don't Panic and I Dig Your Mainframe.

Svelte is also a New Zealand band formed by two ex Supergroove members, Tim Stewart & Ben Sciascia with drummer Jamie Woolright."

I think there have been about 4 bands from NZ in my recent memory who have used the name Svelte

The Svelte I'm talking about did indeed pre-date Fur Patrol (Fur Patrol's first gig was in support of Svelte)... and it contained two Furs (Steve and Andrew). And their EP was called Cape Honey.

I'm such a Fur Patrol nerd.

Yeap thats the one I was thinking off too! Saw them at what used to be Antipodes in Wellington (now the Bluenote) with Fur Patrol. I actually thought they were kinda cool and knew that Andrew was fully into SJF at the time (had a massive conversation with him about "Melt").

Trying to remember the band that Andrew was in before that, saw them play at Heritic Hair (on courtney place, now Burger Fuel!)...

Hmmm old memories!

I assume that'd be either Milkthistle, Clayflower or Gnarly Muskouri. Was Andrew in Gnarly Muskouri? Hmmm, I might be getting the name confused..

Oh, the memories! My bridesmaids and I got our wedding hair done at Heretic

I'm pretty sure that Campbell Kneale (AKA Birchville Cat Motel) was in at least one of the above, as well.

From the official www Svelte webtron band history page:

"2000. Ben notices The Best Of Svelte in a record shop and freaks out at Tim. Tim explains that members of Fur Patrol used to have a band called Svelte."

Ahh it was Clayflower that Andrew was in - I've still got one of their tapes floating round in a box somewhere - it's not bad (bit preachy but tollerable)... I really liked Milkthistle though too - I used to work (briefly) with Delia who played chello in the group.

Ahhh the memories.

Heather, the Campbell in Gnarly Mouskouri (sp?) was Campbell Packer. Danny Adams who did that Verona project kinda recently was also a member. My wife has memories of both Andrew and Steve from Fur Patrol being in this band, but says she's not sure. She is sure she had the hots for Andrew at the time. :)

scandalous! i hope no one sends andrew a link to this...

*sends andrew a link to this*

Andrew was in Clayflower Milkthistle AND Gnarly Mouskouri

Steve was never in Gnarly Mouskouri, Campbell Kneale (Birchville Cat Motel) played guitar. It was a joke band. They wore dresses.

Yes, I know Cam Packer, he went out with my ex-sister-in-law-who-was-also-called-Heather for a while. But Campbell Kneale was also in at least one of those bands, although I thought it was one of the more serious ones. I don't remember the two Cams in one band, but it's at least three lifetimes ago so things are a little blurry.

So was Andrew Savage in any of those bands? I <3 Andrew Savage.

What about Hamish Graham?

Forgot to mention there's a happy hour at the Schooner this Friday (9th) - 9-10pm

While I'm on here I will add that we have played with Svelte (the now Svelte, featuring ex members of supergroove) and they are bloody decent. Very tight mature blues/rock. Nice.

This Svelte's website is a ripper. Their music's not my scene, really, but I had a great chuckle at the self-effacing history and the Onion-like news archive (including an article about ripping off the Onion!?).

downloaded "Grind My Bones"

The new DixinA.S.S. Server system seems to be pretty good as well.
