Personally I don't think Judith wrote it at all... seeing as the questions are almost all exactly the same as the quiz in December at the Empire, for which we have the MIC to thank.

well, without any looking up, I reckon I could confidently say I got 11 right, maybe got another 3 or 4 with educated guesses (or depending on what your definition of a 'NZ artist'), and had no idea on the rest.

10. That would be Witi Ihimaera.
that's it, that is the extent of my knowledge on this quiz. Mind you, I could hazard a guess that Sweetwaters was the answer to #1 - it's not Nambassa, cos that was all hippie like. I'm probably completely off the mark.
Sweetwaters might be the name of the ...
Sweetwaters might be the name of the festival in question, but *where* was the first Sweetwaters held, cos that's what the question wants to know.

Witi Ihimaera is a writer and is (was?) married, so that rules him out as the composer in #10. You don't have to look very farr to get the right person.

Oh yes, Gareth Farr was the composer of the ballet, and Ihimaera was the writer, of course! Now Sweetwaters used to be held at that farm place - see this requires a great memory, and I don't have one of those - but I know we drove south of Auckland!
Sweetwaters was just west of ...
Sweetwaters was just west of Ngaurawahia, which is just north of Hamilton: I never went the first year it was run, because I thought Ngaurawahia was over near Opotiki, which was far too far to drive in a Morris 1300 from the far North. Wrong on both counts! But Nambassa and Sweetwaters were pretty much neck and neck for a couple of years in terms of desirability.
I have this strange niggling feeling that neither was the first, however.

i was thinking nambassa - but i think there actually was a 'Ngaurawahia' festival itself, some time around 71-73?

Thanks for confirming my niggle - even though I spelt the name wrong. I haven't thought of the Bulldogs Allstar Goodtime Band (I'm sure it used to be the ... Daniel was born in New Zealand, but Natasha was born and raised in England, so I don't reckon she counts, no matter what kind of passport she has.
It's a difficult question to answer because it doesn't define what make a person a "NZ artist".

Bob - it's just you ~~ I agree with Jesstherese that these questions are remarkably similar to the questions from the December NZMIC quiz, with a few updated Q's in there. If I can recall rightly (given that it was a pub quiz and the amber liquid and jagermeister was flowing waist-deep) I was lucky enough to find myself on the winning team. In fact, we had a blast and there are photos to prove it, somewhere!
Ahem, and the trainspooter answer to the Sub Pop question is either Dimmer or Flight Of The Conchords EXCEPT the Flight of the fellas haven't actually released anything on the label just yet, whereas Dimmer has back in the dark ages of 1996 or thereabouts. The 7" single was called Crystalator and the b-side was Dawn's Coming In and so Dimmer must be the answ--- *** drinks beer, falls off chair laughing ***

Ha ha! The jubilation on that chap's face is palpable, isn't it? Such a magnificent trophy too - it had two competitors arm-wrestling on a pedestal and an inscription saying 'Xmas champions' or somesuch. And so we were. If there's to be another NZMIC music quiz around the end of May, I reckon we should gather another team together for another hack at it.
