so the prime minister's, saying "fuck you" to marae protocol once again.
a prime minister who openly wants to flout the conventions of the indigenous people of this country the indigenous traditions , she wants to cut out sexism, racism etc, and it would seem; centuries old customs
if i were to agree with the prime minister and say "fuck their culture, we're the government of new zealand" could i class my self as a truely proactive and righteous citizen of the dominion?
shame on you helen clark
come into my house you'll politely (as my guest) sit where you're told. and i would assume you'd expect me to show similar respect in your own
1)a drivel:
"The Government protocol is that women can sit in the front row when being received at state facilities. We like the kaupapa, where there's a Government facility involved, to reflect the values of the Government and of New Zealand in general."
fuck your government protocol,
our country is older than your government,
ackkknwledged by the existance of the treaty
the government of new zealand should reflect the values of the treaty of waitangi and if not,
show a little respect to something that is larger than you
what's next? will she try to tackle islam or is she too much of a coward?

I would find it insulting to be ...
I would find it insulting to be relegated to the back when I am used to being in a position of power, just beacause of tradition. But then I am just a New Zealander, not an indigenous native. I think it has been standard practise for awhile to allow government officials to sit in the front regardless of sex.
Move with the times people. Why should culture stagnate? They are allowed to change and evolve otherwise they will die out.
I think the issue was supposed to be about the people involved were talking through the proceedings. Thats what I heard in the news.

you are quite correct, issue was supposed to be about the people involved were talking through the proceedings. Thats what I heard in the news. but once again it highlights the government's bull in a china shop attitude to the more ancient traditions of our country. once they knocked the seating thing on the head they feel they have more or less had free reign. as we see
this quote:
//Move with the times people. Why should culture stagnate? They are allowed to change and evolve otherwise they will die out.//
is interesting
firstly in that; have you taken a look outside and seen the times?
we have media toying with religions and sacred belief all over the show,
unprecedented gaps between rich and poor
and a new zealand gov who grant themselves more and more priviledges than common people
i've got no qualms about culture changing
but who should change our customs and traditions and to what end?
if you have a custom or tradition in your family,
which is of no harm and has evolved over a period of time based on your beliefs,
do you prefer
a) to possess the power to change it
b) the governemnt changes it for you for no reason other than supplanting their own egos into your culture?
don't get me wrong, facists have their place in the world, and good on you for supporting them
here's some quote as to the why:
//But after that it is the men who sit in the front rows of the paepae, the men who make the speeches. "The women retreat to the third or fourth row benches. Even the wife of the leading orator will not sit with him." The men's speeches negate bad influences from the other side. If a woman is sitting in the front, her fertility dould be affected by makutu, says Walker. For the marae is traditionally the domain of Tumatauenga, the 'god of war'. The women must be protected. "People come in peace or war and you have to determine what it is."
Oratory, he says, is the prerogative of males who speak under the mana of their ancestors. They are obliged to always speak the truth. ,"The women, who sit to one side, will correct them if ihey hear any slip-up or mistake - and they will make it loud enough to make the speaker feel ashamed." Although 'they themselves almost never speak, women live longer and they are the keepers of the culture, he says.
i mean sure, remove all maori traditions , if need be, and truly become little england
whitewash everything so nz can be a true drone clone.

Good points.
It would be interesting to find out how many Maori actually follow the protocols without knowing why. I have to say I did not know. Cheers for that. I wonder if it is a common reason among all the tribes? Some Marai's don't follow that seating protocol (I have heard, could be false).
I'm not supporting facists, I just happened to agree with some things....
As the leaders of our country I still think government should sit where they like at a powiri. They are not just an individual - they are supposed to represent everyone. Besides, I don't think Helen cares if she becomes infertile...

liberal wishy-washy that I am, I agree with Judith Collins and the PM on this one - if it's state business, there's no reason Maori protocol should take precedence.

scroll up about 30cm, there's nothing anti woman about it, it's for the good of the tribe

as you see the women arguably play a more vital role in the proceedings than the men, it's important to ask who is really anti women here. the woman who pushes herself and her ilk above other women into a position where their fertility could be makutu'd because of her grandiose sense of heirachy, or me, supporting a long standing tradition. which is in place to protect the fertility of women.
this is not an issue of gender discrimination, and helen clark is certainly not making a stand for all women just her selfish little clique. if we wanted to address sexism we could perhaps look at something like the air new zealand policy on seating single men next to unaccompanied children, but i'm really not interested in petty gender wars. this is all about ritual,

// the government of new zealand should reflect the values of the treaty of waitangi and if not, show a little respect to something that is larger than you
Not that I'm an expert on it, but doesn't the treaty make Maori subjects of Her Majesty and so therefore they are under the governance of Helen as the prime minister of Her Majesty's Government?
It just seems all that Helen is saying is that her being the prime minister (or her colleagues being MPs) is more important than their sex.
yes, that's exactly what she's ...
yes, that's exactly what she's saying, it's nt like she's fighting the fight for women in general,
i'm saying she should get off her high horse,
i'm tired of these politicians exerting their power to live a tier above ordinary people,
she's a democratically elected representative NOT the queen,
she needs a sign to that effect in her toilet,
or something along the lines of "your shit smells too helen"
however glad to see her taking this kind of thing on board with her quoote:
"the guest from hell"

what kind of country do we have here?
well hopefully one still worth living in...
Jordon's Catch22. I once found a Leo Sayer album at the Super Shed with property of Tim Dyer written on the back in blue biro. That sure made me laugh.
what kind of country do we have here?
one where the Hierarchal demands still outweigh common sense
or in some cases good manners
although I am told it is bad manners to point this out
3,5, and 7 its Bath night
they sing "Gonna get in the Hot Tub"
my Wife tells me
"if you play that video one more time..."
what kind of country do we have here?
well, its sort of a new one
like my youngest still not quite getting thoughts into words
but sometimes I love the sentiment or is it the intent
I recieved an email from a famous writer today
well, not famous but a favourite of mine
he wrote some stories that made me write songs
so his conversation removed some burden
what kind of country do we have here?
one that would welcome you home
and maybe (this time)
let you find/make your place (peace)
