It sounds very interesting. I'm curious to find out more... currently my only concern is where its going to be held... because I like a good road trip as long as its not to $$ to get to.
i am surprised a forum has been started so early. its a long way off yet....Feb '07 to be exact. There is some limited info on the alowhum website (click on "camp") and a little bit more info in the editorial of the April issue of alowhum, though more will be revealed in the may issue and the very limited tickets go on sale in June.
Sorry to the mods. I don't mean for this to appear to be advertising...simply answering a question.
Basically....Imagine the ultimate american summer camp and then add to the mix the best bands in the land, current and ol' skool, and you got camp alowhum.
// Canoeing and confidence courses. Hmm, sounds vaguely christian to me!
haha. yup. I've been to my fair share of christian camps. "El Rancho 1990"- my first summer romance.
Camp A low hum is loosley based on my experiences of those as a teenager, peoples reports of the ATP festival and the movies "Meatballs" and "Wet Hot American Summer". I even looked into some christian campgrounds for the location...but no booze allowed i did't think would go down to well with the punters. Only thing I'm gutted i don't have, that most christian camp grounds have, is a Flying Fox...but you can't win em all.
//You should get Hells Angels to do security.
haha. yup, I made sure i read the sweetwaters book a couple of times over.
I hope you realise this is going to be a seriously hot ticket. Where do I sign? I'm totally going to this. I met my first love at a Christian summer camp (Summer Harvest 1997 if I'm not mistaken) and it was just about the best thing ever. The daily two hour worship sessions weren't so sweet as - but replace them with some edgy indie rock and you've got a recipe for success!
Will there be damper around a campfire? I think you should get everyone to contribute old school camp ideas from cubs and whatnot, to get all that great stuff happening. Damper, obviously marshmallow roasting, scoring in the sand dunes and getting cold sand in your shorts, drunk skinnydipping, spewing on warm lion red, spotlight the game (YEAH), tents, oh man, the happiest memories of my life are camping memories.....I used to look forward to Tawharanui for 11 months and finally it would come and it would surpass expectations every time.
nobody finds out till they turn up on the day. This way, only the true supporters of the project get rewarded. I didn't want a bunch of people turning up because "so and so" were playing. I only wanted people who dig low hum and/or camping to come. I'm sure rumours will spread as you can't organise something with 50 odd bands and have it all kept secret. shit, I'm sure there will be leaks...but ideally, it will be sold out before anything leaks.
PS..it is like 10 or so months away, so to be honest I haven't booked a single band yet. I've only spoken to a few bands, i still have a list of 50 odd I won't be approaching until june at the earliest.
So, it's a celebration of you/your magazine/brand and "the best bands in the land, current and ol' skool" is really an aside? Am i right or way off the mark? Interesting approach if so.
//nobody finds out till they turn up on the day. //I only wanted people who dig low hum and/or camping to come
there is something quite spooky about that whole vibe. knowing you though blink I know it's coming from the right place but if I didn't know of you I would be thinking who is this messiah wannabe? there's a weird amway, scientology edge to this. just a tip off from the more cynical of us...
haha. the whole point of a low hum is about introducing new bands to people...so the plan is that you come to every show regardless of who is playing and see the bands...in the knowledge that even if you don't like any of the bands you walk away with a compilation cd and a magazine...worst case scenario is that you don't like any of the live bands and do't like ANY of the songs on the CD. how often is that gonna happen?
The camp is the ultimate extension of this....I am pushing it as a CAMP first and foremost for (indie) music lovers to hang and spend three days with other (indie) music lovers. If i was to book a headline act and then promote that act and then sell tickets to a few hundred people who are only there to see that band, not experience a fun summer camp...then I'd be selling out.
I don't have a messiah complex. I just wanna spend three days celebrating the end of the low hum tours with people who supported the idea and project.
Blink, I totally "get" this whole idea and I'm fucking into it. Why does everything always think you see yourself as this king of the scene? I really don't get that at all from you, in person or on teh ineternet. I guess it's just......(say it with me now):
it's 'Camp A Low Hum' rather than say 'Indie Music Camp'
As you and Blink strangely seemed to ignore part of what I said, I say it again... If you didn't know Blink (and his intentions) it would APPEAR to be a bit "king of the scene" styles. I'm not sure but I believe there are still music fans out there that Blink doesn't know yet!
Furthermore there are some aspects to this that imply that you kind of have to be a fan/supporter of ALH to "get in/get a ticket". Thats says 'exclusiveness' and 'private club' to me. Generally aren't we fans of the band or the music first and foremost?
Perosnally I think it's a really good idea and I really hope its heaps of fun for all involved.
//Furthermore there are some aspects to this that imply that you kind of have to be a fan/supporter of ALH to "get in/get a ticket". Thats says 'exclusiveness' and 'private club' to me. Generally aren't we fans of the band or the music first and foremost?
That's what I'm talking about!
I wish you luck and I'm sure it'll be a success. I myself have never paid to go to a gig when I didn't know who was playing so this is quite a strange (but that doesn't ness. mean bad) concept for me and having never been to an ALH gig (well, I did go to the Phoenix Foundation one, but I thought of it more as a PF/Cassette/Phelps Munro show than an ALH show) I guess I'm not "in the club". Like I said though, all the best with it.
oops. sorry dust, i'm sorry if you misread my tone. I totally respected what you said in that first post and your second summed it up perfectly. This ain't a music festival, its equal parts frisbee, equal parts campfire singalong, equal parts canoeing, equal parts live music. Its not a festival, its a camp.
Sorry if it comes across as "exclusive" Herb, this really isn't the case. I just don't want people there for the "music only". Its exclusive only in that the tickets are extremely limited.
ah well. still 9 months away..no need to talk about it right now.
My bad, I did misread your post Blink. I see you were actually refining the 'appearance' of things.
Might I also explain that someone said to me that there was some kind of Beer Company that did this sort of thing and got really bad reaction for it. I think mainly 'cos the bands were not revealed. That sparked my fear of mis-interpretation here. That and the christian/amway jokes could easily backfire...
There's something damn Kiwi about the whole idea, and for sure it's not about bands and tickets. A celebration!
Blink, check into the old Kiwi Ranch location in rotovegas. I have no idea who owns it now. Could be teh awesomo. I'm not sure how much of the awsome old stuff like flying fox, roller coaster etc got shut down by the evil OSH though...
Is there a Kiwi Ranch near Rotovegas as well? I know there's one just out of Wellington which is where we went for our primary school camp. Luckily the pervert cook who worked there when my sister went had left by then...
the location is already sorted, though if it goes well I'd like to do them in various parts of the country, so will look into it. Problem with Kiwi Ranches etc...is that they are often christian owned which means they aren't usually that keen to have a bunch of rock'n'rollers take up camp for three days.
I remember the boys weren't even allowed in the girls' section of the camp, let alone in tents together, let alone any funny business. No wonder christians get married at like 19, they can't wait to get their knickers off and get the party started.
