Forums: The Bar,

Oh. Html not a happening thing.

apparently not, although it did work okay in the forum listings, just not on the actual forum itself.. special character seemed to work okay though. it is that accent thing over the 'o', isn't it?

oh, it's working now.

so yeah, a good night.. Amina were awesome to start with - like beautiful woodland faeries.

This thread is really happening.

I get the impression that the people who went are either A) still holidaying in Auckland or B) still too much in awe to talk about it.

(b) does seem to be the case. dagnabbit.

Absolutely sublimely amazing! Best thing I've seen EVER I reckon. Just a totally complete show - visually as well as aurally. I loved that there was no talking from the band between songs too (except a little "takk" once).
This is one band that would benefit from a live DVD so everyone could see how awesome they are.

Holy crap though Jess, you managed to get a newbie posting a 'reply to' AND a well written post, you should be super proud. And welcome, Huriana.

Thanks Joanna. Long time lurker, first time poster, sort of.

Sort of? Stalkers are the best.

Where were you Noizy? Most of the rest of the Welly mafia were present. They needed you man, up on stage playing the bass and helping out. At one point they performed with two basses, and I still had trouble making out the subs. I can only surmise that it was my elevated position within the theatre that caused the apparent lack of low-end, that and my recurring deafness. Damn, the fella can sing like an opera lad though. Filled the theatre with his angel voice, fit to bursting. Pretty strobes & visual projections as well, but I still managed to nod off for a bit. Must have been the heat, the sitting upstairs like an old prune and the curtain in front of the band.

i actually found it a little TOO full on- like Russel Bailie said- it wasn't just a wall of sound, but an avalanche... Don't get me wrong- i loved it, top gig of the past years, but i actually had to give up one sense to compensate for the other being overloaded- i had to shut my eyes or i thought my brain would explode. Just would've like a little bit more.... space... in the music. Amina were PERfect little pixies and i luffed them.

Really? I missed that. Which member played the second bass? There was ample bottom-end from where I was standing (against the railing just above the lowered section in front of the stage).

Salut, glad to know there was some low-action after all. Two bass wigout was somewhere near the middle of the end of the show, with the po-faced angel-boy slinging a red one over his wiry frame and proceeding to prog-out with the usual bass dude providing the framework, in a Sigur Ros half-time signature naturally. Noizy was nowhere to be seen, and that is a shame.

I feel like tacos. Etc...

I've had trouble logging in from the various net cafes I've been inhabiting, so have been prevented from adding my two cents. I was there with a mate: he came out raving about them, about their techhnical expertise, the complexity of the music and the perfectionist ethos they have. I came out with reservations: I could acknowledge everything he said but the whole sebang left me unmoved. When I'd seem them in Brisbane I'd had a similar reaction, but blamed it on the lengthy travel arrangements involved in getting there cheaply from Dunedin. I think the basic problem for me is that they work so hard on the aesthetics of the music that it becomes lacking in any kind of emotional impact - except for a couple of rare occasions. Even when they cranked everything up, right at the end, there was something missing, a connection between them and me. So - very beautiful, in a cold sort of way: it turns out I need other things in my music.

im gutted i spent all of my merchandise money on booze. i would have loved one of those t shirts.

I thought they were pretty good. I found after half an hour or so of bathing in nice sound.. I got a little bored.. perhaps this could be of the very repetitive melodies, limited range of phonemes, and generally the whole minimalist framework. This of course is to be expected when you listen to their albums. But even a die-hard Sigur Ros fan has to admit the melodies are very similar?
I thought Anima were okay but what is interesting is that so many people liked them! Auckland has alot of experimental music with people playing computers, odd instruments etc(Although it tends to be more improv than the composed structures of Anima) but noone goes to that stuff...hmm just a thought and my 5 cents

Surely Sigur Rós have a very different audience from the kind of local acts you're describing... these guys are a straightforward rock band, not much in common with any experimental act.

Meh, I'm always wary of looking like I'm trying to out-weird everyone, taste-wise.

I'm not too familiar with Sigur Ros, but the video for their track Glósóli is one of the best I've ever seen. Beautiful, epic stuff.

Well! I spoke too soon.

I love to say "I told you so".
