what makes a good playlist?

I'm at Waikato Uni, working on a research project regarding playlists--with a goal of designing good software to support playlist creation. First step, though, is getting feedback on what makes playlist good or bad.

So: what factors come into play when you see or hear a playlist and think, 'wow, that's good!' ?

Granted, the songs themselves have to be good, or the playlist isn't listenable. But after that, is there something special to the order of the songs? The theme? How long should a playlist be, anyway?

Tell me stories--I'd love to hear about particularly nice examples of playlists.

Forums: The Bar,

If you are talking about radio/broadcast, then no playlist is a good playlist. The best radio shows are the ones which do not have a set playlist, or a different playlist for every show if you will, rather then the same playlist every day for weeks...

Any playlist should always leave room for requests, etc...

If that is what you are tlking about...

Are there any radio stations that let the DJ play whatever s/he wants?

most of the bNet stations problaby have "DJ-decides" shows. I know I get to choose what I want to play on the show I run on Active.

Not reapeating songs 3 times during the day for me would be a start to create a decent play list. It is what I like about The Rock their no repeat 9-5 work days, sometimes they have no repeat work weeks, where they don't repeat the same song twice during the week.
