Myshkin's 'Do We Want to Talk about TV?' topic got me thinking about some of the telly I've been watching recently.
I caught the first half of 'So You Can Think You Can Dance' on Sunday night, only my first exposure to the show, and was a bit, err, baffled by the whole thing.
They've got judges, but it appears the finalists are decided by public vote.
The waltz couple had to dance to some lame bit of Enya music instead of some 'real' waltz music.
Michael Parmenter was referred to (I think) as the 'undisputed king of NZ dance' (um, Douglas Wright, anyone?)
Are any nzmers watching this? And can any of them actually dance? Who should I be supporting if I'm going to tune into the last few shows?

Yip, Anita. I met her at a party once and we danced to awful 80s music for awhile, which i thought was cool cause dancers (at least the grumpy ones I know) never dance off-stage/out of class. And she's the only red-head left. Red-heads are cool.

Anita for me too, noizyboy. She's the best dancer by far, I think. I am horrified however that the public get to choose the winner. These people are professional dancers actually getting a contract with a dance agency in the States, as I understand. What if the public picks someone who can't dance with the big boys/girls? I love Tim Shadbolt, but I'm afraid that if he had won Dancing with the Stars, it would have been the same principle for me. I think I watch too much tele!

oh i loved it...finally some pretty decent dancers on tv!!! ANd god did Anita deserve to win! As a contemporary dancer myself I really loved her choreography in particular...
And honestly, I think Michael Parmenter deserves the title of New Zealand's king of Dance more then Douglas Wright does. But your allowed to disagree :P

Quite right, Lydia Z -I think I might have even rung up $10 on Anita's behalf. I still think it sucks to leave that sort of thing to public vote, though. These were talented dancers, and it seems to be that the prize was really worth the winning, and could make a difference in their careers.
And I do worry that one of our greatest dance proponents is living on a sickness benefit in a council house in Mt Albert. Parmenter's certainly more populist and his work is more accessible. Good on him for being involved with this contest.

I think its great the way that Anita just decided on the night of the first audition while she was working as crew, to just haveago - she seemed from the get go to have some sort of energy that the others didn't (even if she lacks the cool name thing). I haven't actually seen any of the programme since then, and although I swear I was watching last night, didn't see her do any dancing. I think the right decision was made, even with the public voting, even with the ability for the public to vote as often as they wanted. Mind you, there's a nice little conspiracy theory to be started - we never did see how many votes the finalists got, did we? Even if we had, who says they'd have been accurate?

Indeed. Hence saying 'arguably the king of NZ dance', as opposed to the 'undisputed king of NZ dance' might have been more accurate.
