Over the Atlantic just signed to Carpark records in the states! wow!
Carparks an amazing label!!..and from the looks of the news on the homepage it looks like "Junica" is gonna be released on vinyl as well as CD and Over the Atlantic are going to the US soon to tour it. Nuts!!
yeah, though signer is the only one of bevans projects that carpark have released, and a few months back when i took ota on tour, they were under the impression that the record wasn't going to be put out on carpark, hence them doing it themselves...so I was pleased as punch when I heard that carpark changed their mind and are now putting it out. So pleased that this awesome record is going to be heard by some people.
A kind soul from nz has sent me the Junica album, and it is literally the only thing I have been listening to since its arrival. It is amazing.
I hear via the digital grapevine that they played a gig on Saturday night. Did any of you lucky locals get to go? A good time had? How do they do a live show?
haha, their live show is different everytime. When i took them on tour, it was the two-piece of Nik and Bevan.. in Wellington they've experimented with a few diff line-ups...the one that played last weekend was awesome... Nik+ bevan, but also Dino (HDU) on drums, Jules (Letterbox Lambs) on Bass, and leanne+Amy on backing vox (both of them sang on the record). There were also two pelicans handing out chocolate fish. Photos on http://neonsleep.com/partyphoto/wellington/pelicanskeleton.html.
the band sounded awesome.."fly to the states" & "Kevin Shields" were definately highlights.
haha. I'm such a fanboy.
Over The Atlantic playing in CHCH tonight at the Dux for FREE with Frase+Bri for anybody whos interestd.
The international reviews of the carpark release are starting to roll in, and, generally, are looking pretty good...
--------
Oh, hell. I have a soft spot for this sort of dreamy pop. Particularly when, like Junica, it's as cute as a button. Throw in a song called 'Kevin Shields' and you've won me over before you press play. Skip directly to that song and you will hear the sound of two nerds in love with music, but also completely in love with love. It's warm in the way that the early 90s are warm, but also shapely and full in the way that this decade is. Oh, hell. This isn't making sense. What am I trying to say? A million people would stand up and say that they hate guff like Over The Atlantic because of how self-conscious and precious it all is, but they can go to hell. They don't have hearts.
Luckily, this reviewer's heart is made of sweet, sweet chocolate and goo. So Junica becomes eminently listenable. It's easy to blindly and erroneously say that someone has a knack of writing a good pop song, but Over The Atlantic really do have that knack in a weird idiosyncratic way. Little slaps around the face in the middle of a song keep it constantly involving, the quick jabs of electric guitar fuzz on 'Glass Breaks' are surprising miracles, and the gradually heightening drums on, yes, 'Kevin Shields' are worthy of the sludge-monger himself. It is so, so simply done, but carried with such grace that it is impossible not to marvel. All these impish touches are the work of clever boys, and the Kiwi duo at the heart of this band are exactly that.
But it ain't all that good. Some parts are drab, some parts sound like Death Cab, some parts are too saccharine and some parts should scream where they whimper. But it doesn't matter a jot when the good parts are as good as they are. Climactic finisher 'Fly To The States' is wooze-pop in its most concentrated form. Sludgy guitars drone over repeated vocals and synthy drums in such a hypnotic way that it is easy to assume a CD malfunction when it abruptly halts after nine and a half minutes. But when that happens, you'll put it on again. Then you'll remember that you have a repeat button and a sleep timer on your hi-fi and then you'll go to bed with it on most nights. So maybe it is all that good. Oh, hell. Buy it, it's nice.
actually, having now seen the actual cover in real life, it's not as bad as I thought. Nothing like the pure square acreage of a vinyl sleeve to make something look cool.
still prefer what came out of L*'s freezer, though.
// actually, having now seen the actual cover in real life, it's not as bad as I thought. Nothing like the pure square acreage of a vinyl sleeve to make something look cool.
haha, i wanted to say "wait till you've seen the vinyl", but, haha, i din't want to be "that guy". I reckon the new artwork is amazing. I'm not 100% down with the choice of typeface, but the colours and illustration are fuckn awesome.
You'll always be "that guy" Blink, whether you say it or not. ;)
I quite like the artwork, dunno whether i'd go so far as to saying it's "amazing" but it's def. cool and like Blink i'm unsure about the typeface - but whatever. Hats off to getting a fine NZ album released worldwide AND pressed on vinyl to boot!
Wish they'd made a lock groove out of the ending of "Fly To The States" - imagine it!?!
excuse me, but I have a new song and I need some help. Can you please record yourself saying "Hey Man! We're sick of your stupid war" and email it to stlucy@gmail.com also ask your friends and family to do the same. Its really easy, use windows sound recorder... start menu, all programmes, accesories, entertainment, sound recorder. Record, save, attach and send. , If you have fancy recording software or are using a mac, then its way easier I guess.
Its not that I really understand all the things going on in the world, not at all. But I see alot of people getting killed lately and it all seems to have a common theme, god, allah, jesus and Oil. At the end of the day, embedding projectiles of any metal into living human tissue is a stupid way to resolve issues, be they american made ordnance, home made cellphone bombs or any of boeings fine products... Get your kids to record it, record it in any language you want, eg; "ehoa, he koretake to riri" etc. I promise, I will make no money off this and its just because I don't know any other way to express my outrage. If I was an iraqi, I would be in lebanon helping to difuse cluster bomb fragments, but as it stands I'm a lame arse songwriter in Mt. Maunganui. So this is my gig. Join in.

Wrongly OTA didn't get any funding for their upcoming US tour, so I have put together a little fundraiser:
OVER THE ATLANTIC U.S Fundraiser – Sat Oct 14th
On Oct 25th Wellington band Over the Atlantic kick off a 25 date tour of the U.S and Canada to celebrate the international release of their debut album “Junica” on New Yorks’ Carpark Records. They're playing shows all over the states including the Dam Festival in Washington D.C, The Montreal Pop Festival and CMJ in New York. The tour is totally self funded by the band so please come and send this band away with some love and some money for food.
Show is $10 entry
doors open at 9:30.
There are also five copies of the hand screened tour poster on special 300gm card for sale for $10 each.
Over the Atlantic will also have limited copies of the US vinyl pressing of “Junica” available for sale at this show.
Great international reviews of "Junica" are coming in thick and fast:
"Over the Atlantic's debut album, Junica, is a sweet and satisfying debut, and one that will hopefully bring them some recognition on all sides of the oceans".
DUSTED MAGAZINE
"The album’s packed with melodic gems, such as “Heart Land”, as well as instances of fresh innovation, such as the growling, scathing guitar-work in “France.” Overall, Junica’s a great start"
LEFTHIP.COM
"Ignoring common electro-pop formulas that pulse snare beats steadily over verse, Over the Atlantic show restraint and ingenuity. Like Brian Wilson's Smile, anything goes anywhere, yet everything has a place. Laptop beats imitate found-sounds like Coke-bottle clanks while Telecaster ticks hint at an electro-thrash chorus but instead course forth into a five-beat piano bow that tows its introduction into a nicely-layered finale. "
JUNK MEDIA
"Oh, hell. I have a soft spot for this sort of dreamy pop. Particularly when, like Junica, it's as cute as a button."
THE INDIE WORKSHOP
"You'll certainly feel the electricity of Over the Atlantic, and when they're talking loud and clear, you might even fall so in love with them."
TREBLEZINE.COM
Man, this album sounds heaps like JPSE, eh? Specifically the one the guy from the Strawpeople produced... songs like 'Kevin Shields', the melody's heaps like 'Block' (although I guess it's also like Architecture in Helsinki), and other places the arrangements, the chords, the vox... 'Jess' and 'Fly To The States'... fuck, most of it really.
It's not a rip-off by any means, I guess more than anything it's just made me realise how seldom I hear stuff that sounds like JPSE.
Is the contents of the NZ version different from the Carpark one, btw?
Watched the vid for '35 Black & White' the other day, it's what finally got me off my arse to check out the album.
Kevin Shields totally is the new Block. haha, shit, very similar feel, melody and arrangment, both great songs. Kevin Shields live performed by the OTA band totally takes it in an amazing direction...man, I am hanging out to see it live again.
