Forums: Classifieds,

what the hell you doing leaving electric confectionaires? bloody hell- they're gonna be SET for the next couple of years...

// they're gonna be SET for the next couple of years...

word is they already (prematurely) signed a major label deal...so they are probably more likely to be raped (not, SET) for the next couple of years.

// major label deal...

sorry, to a NZ label. i neglected to mention.

of course...that could be all hearsay.

no no, i heard that too. when i say set, yes i know they'll be taken advantange of and stuff, but i guess, when you're young, these are the kind of mistakes you have to make for yourself- i'm sure they'll be looked after and have a great time- and they're young- they won't have the nous to do it independant- and hey- there's a few dodgy indepenants even here in wellington (actually how many are up and running any more?)and then you know, they'll do their five album contract, be spent, burnt out and bitter. Or maybe they'll be wise enough to only sign for one album, and relish the experience and go on to do great things. um ok i got distracted somewhere here...

// and they're young- they won't have the nous to do it independant-

Does that theory work for The Checks

The Checks can get shit happening overseas because they haven't signed their lives away here, The Elec Confectionaires (sure, I am not privvy to the details of the contract...but I would have to assume..) are pretty much screwed. Even if they have a succesful first album, I doubt they'll ever see any money and they are pretty much rooted for overseas opportunitys. Why would a major label give a band who has NO commercial track record, NO substantial live following and NO proven commercial success, anything other then a raping deal. The label were in the position of power, not the band and thats the worst situaiton to be in, The Elec Confectionaires wouldn't have had (or had very little) bargaining power....and have been under the influence of a manager who I assume would be recieving some sort of signing bonus (affecting their reasoning)

of course...i am just an indie cunt, but, odds are, this is probably how it went down.

yeah yeah but the checks have signed a five album deal- what happens when they break up after the second album? or if they don't get on with the label after all?
I'm an optimist, but i think Lorraine Barry has good intentions. And hell, if nothing else, they'll learn something from the experience.

*yawn*

Yeah yeah blink, we get it........ Majior labels bad / underground & obscure bands good.

um..thats not what i was saying at all. infact, the bulk of the bands i love are on major labels....the prob i was saying, was that by signing a major deal when you have no bargaining power means you are going to get shit... The Checks on the other hand went and got themselves some following and did stuf first, so putting themselves in a position for a good negotiation. I'm all for bands making money....but, making money, not losing it.

I'd be very keen to jam. See my profile.

well as it transpired i half got kicked out and half quit.
i didnt like the whole direction it was headed.im glad to be out.
the music was sweet as. the business was not.i wasnt comfortable with the whole signing to a major so early in the game or at all.it just wasnt me.

sounds like you're the only confectionaire with any sense. good luck with your new band bro.

And on the upside, your login name is totally radsicles.

If you've ever seen Tonari no Totoro you'd feel the same way about the cat bus, Dust

heh, I prefer the dust bunnies and even their japanese name (makkuro kurosuke) is so darn cute.

However, I did find this fact (or fiction?) interesting:

"The Cat Bus originates from the Japanese belief that if a cat grows old enough it gains magical shape-changing powers and is called a "bake neko". The Cat Bus is a bake neko that saw a bus and decided to become one."

Hi i had a band and one by one they just went to wellington so Im to keen start sumsing new.
Just recording an e.p at the mo by myself (to finitch off what we HAD started). i think you would like it as it was in a similar vein to what elec.confec's were doing. Quirky popy stuff.
