Peoples Radio

Turn off the radio, turn off that bullshit. The challenge: Can a topic replace radio?

The rules: Add 2 tracks to follow the preceeding ones. Use the blue level posts, Save the grey posts for discussing a selection.

Selection Style points: diversity and juxtaposition, mix/spark with previous track, freshness and classy old skoolers, obscure peppered with mainstayers. Remixes of gems gets the big points. Indulgent personal favourites - fo' shizzle.

Procurement and replay of this playlist is mandatory as a means to replace radio.

[Not to be confused with NZM Mixtape Club]:

really low vocals urk me bad.

//low low low vox

Totally - semi frustrating, and I'm sure I heard a version with much better mix, but I can't find it.

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy (The Discount Rhinos Full Control Mix)
Tom Vek - Nothing But Green Lights

A little 6 months ago, but pulls the feet to floor... :)

I like this Tom Vek tune.... I thought he sounded like a Kiwi or Ozzie, but from a wee search seems he's British?

I hadn't heard any of the artists on this thread before (well, know a few tunes each from Cee-Lo, Madlib, Aesop Rock and MF Doom), so it's been good to dig through some stuff I wouldn't otherwise listen to.

Of Montreal - So Begins Our Alabee
Madvillain - Money Folder (Four Tet remix)

Four Tet seem to be doing killer remixes

I interviewed him and Dan Snaith (was Manitoba, now Caribou) last time they were in Oz and they were both really clear that remixing being is their paid job. On the flipside Kieran was raving about how lucky he was to get remixed by J Dilla (extra lucky now that he's died so young, I guess!). So there's this curious dynamic going on between having to remix things to survive and putting in some genuine effort there.

Dan said remixing other people's tracks is basically the same process as how he writes his own music - taking interesting samples and building tracks around them - but he throws away the majority of tracks he makes that way, whereas with a remix, once you've done it you've got to pass it back to the label / original artist.

Cage (feat. EL-P, Aesop Rock, Tame 1 & Yak Ballz) - Left It To Us
Tapes n Tapes - Just Drums

(sorry I had to do a double header, and shuffle it a bit).

Jose Gonzales - Crosses (Superbass Special Mix)
The Whip - Frustration

Jose's album being called 'Veneer' seemed like some kind of beautiful irony on his part about how hollow his own music sounds. :P

Veneer is better for the environment ;P

Come on peeps , share your good tracks.

Trying to find time and music. Losing 120gb of data when a portable hard drive becomes a brick is ... awesome.

I am crying for you, and hoping that brings me good firewire karma.

(I recently lost a 1Tb drive only for it to come back, but have no way of backing up that size).

It's somewhat off topic, but this site has compilations for every year since 1960, and it's rad, and I could certainly work my way through them as a radio station.

It is rad.

New Order - Age of Consent
Gang of Four - Natural's Not In It

Man I've always loved that GOF track, the riff is so chiggy. So Fugazi.

Lyrically I reckon it's better than any Fugazi stuff too.

Hopefully you can spot why I put New Order after The Whip. ;)

//new order

yeap, and the transition does work well loud!

//fugazi

phwor, your talking to a dumbarse fugazi fanboy (union hall gigs anyone?). i only really found GOF after TheRapture put out that House of Jealous Lovers tracks a few years ago. Latecomer and loved them ever since really but still it seems like GOF are a bit "too cool" again these days anyways.

Heard 'House of Jealous Lovers' at Sydney Mardi Gras a few years back and was so stoked, so much fun to dance to after a night of generic "dance" mixes of chart pop and r&b.

I held off checking out GOF because the only reason people seemed to be rating them was so they had a reason to be angry about Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. :) Only chucked this tune in the mix because I was so pleasantly surprised at how good it is.

good call
