Representing New Zealand

Who is this 'None of the Above'? They must rule.

Yeap 'None of the above' do rule :-)

Seriously though I wouldn't say any of those bands really typify a "kiwi" sound. Phoneix probably get the closest for me, just because they try so much different stuff.

Personally I think the "kiwi" sound really exists in our present (sure you can point to the NZ sound of the eighties but we've so moved past that now).

"Personally I think the "kiwi" sound really exists in our present" --- This should have said I DONT think the kiwi sound exists in our present :-)

Yeah I *think* it's safe to say that we all agree that there is no 'kiwi' sound (although jets topic begs for further discussion - link below).

That said, there are alwasy going to be bands that stand in for "Nu Zillund" be it government initiatives, sporting situations etc etc. Certain bands are representing us as a nation. I'd be really keen on dropping the Dobber/Exponents edge for say Scribe/FFD?

Shihad?

nationalism doesn't belong in music

finally!

Quick, scrap the national anthem

//nationalism doesn't belong in music

I've been waiting for years for someone else to say that!

// nationalism doesn't belong in music

but does music belong in sport, which, in many cases, is just an extension of nationalism (or parochialism)?

How could they leave 438may and Goodnight Nurse out of this poll??? How dare they! haha

i so hope u were kidding about 48may/goodnight nurse

shihad should b on the list, no question. obviously a success here and have built themselves up over the years, not just a band that hit the top 40 wit screaming 13yr old female fans or ignorent arty farty morons who think they are better than the rest o the world caus they listen to Bfm, and are very "trendy".

NO. They rocked and they rolled thier way to fame in nz.

a true nz band, lyk any good band they earned thier success. we should be proud o them.

Nobody should ever mention Shihad.

I think the whole thing is that New Zealand doesn't exist, its just a concept used to attract intelligent immigrants. Whether it works is debatable. But thats besides the point, there isn't really a "Kiwi" sound because NZ is and always has been a melting pot of sorts. Our first track "Blue Smoke" was just a nicked version of someone else's song, and that is NZ-we have always been a rip off. But a bloody good one. 'cept Shihad. Wankers.
I voted Goldenhorse by the way, because their sound is I think closest to the concept that is NZ-relaxed and kinda cheesy. But so is Canada.

Shihad... wankers?
Why do you think that? Because they left the country? It was the best thing they could do for their own progress...

Is every kiwi muso who have left the country wankers? If so, Im one too....

No ONE band can represent a whole country's "sound"... it would have to be a collection of at least 5 or so.. in my opinion.

Goldenhorse? Who have an English lead singer, and sound like a cut-rate version of The Sundays? Jesus.

> it would have to be a collection of at least 5 or so.. in my opinion.

good call, here's my five...

* Fat Freddy's
* The Clean
* Skallander
* Bilge Festival
* The Muttonbirds

I don't think its possible to choose just one "New Zealand" band or musician. Different groups add different aspects to the NZ scene, and thats why NZ music is interesting.

A good question is, though, is does a band lose its "kiwiness" when they pack up and make an album like, say, Pacifier?

But I still like Shihad, even if Pakehendrix doesn't.

*sigh* and you're in the same band as me....

What would you say if I declared "Welcome Home" my favourite song ever? But one must accept that there will be some songs about NZ as part of NZ nationalism (apart from the national anthem, which should be changed so someone can remember the words). Kisses and cuddles, everybody.

Pluto and Goldenhorse are both solid examples of NZ bands who could very well move overseas and not die of starvation. It would help if they moved to areas with large kiwi populations - London or Sydney, because I still think they are quite charmingly quaint.

I'd rather shoot off my NZ-ness than have the Feelers or Goldenhorse represent anything remotely linked to me.

I chose the Phoenix Foundation, not because I think they represent it either (but there would be no shooting if they DID get chosen by Helen Clark), but because if anyone was going to do that for me it would be Neil Finn and I didn't think to click none of the above until just now... and also because I love the Phoenix Foundation (HEAPS) and I want them to win this popularity competition! In my head.

...Neil Finn rules. As do the Phoenix Foundation.

I'm with you, Lucy. Phoenix Foundation have that really quirky, dark, whimsical thing that I like about NZers as a whole.

There cannot be one band/style that represents NZ music internationally because a sound (which is what music is) belongs to no-one as does a style/genre. We are a multicultural country and to try to catagorise something that cannot be catagoraised (a.k.a. music) will only result in confusion or misrepresentation which is quite damaging and that how wars start...Its like taking a picture of a beach and saying this represents nz...

why would we want to promote only a few musicians. Doesn't NZ pride themselves on being diverse. If we say that one band is more kiwi than another theorectically we are saying that in music there is only one right or wrong way. Music is an art which makes it subjective.

better to have our taxes promote a few than none at all, subjective or not

none at all shall rule the world

Man, these artists would make most other peeps overseas think that we are THE suicide capital of the world.

How about getting these 3 fine bands to represent NZ:

Pig Out
Shaky Hands
Tigertones

Fuck the corporate bollocks of U2 wannabes like the Feelers et al. On seeing their latest video I was really hoping James Reid would fall of the top of that fucking building that he is posing on top of and just...fuck....off..........................................>>>

Peace in the '07 and here's to some REAL music getting some REAL airtime.....
