Don't know if anyone's mentioned this.....eden's appears to have closed and all gigs cancelled.....
Must admit my last few experiences there haven't been exactly awesome so not sure I'll be sorry to see it go.

The Schooner Tavern has been open for (guessing) three weeks now as a live music venue. Probably good for around 300 people - again, at a guess!

Yeah, I saw Batrider there. Average PA, but unequalled awesomeness in terms of 70s decor - feels like someone did an amazing job of making a retro 70s bar, but actually it's just a really out of date bar. I loved it. 300 people would be pretty chocka, but doable - it's slightly larger than KA, but with no outside area like they have. Should be the new rising star with Edens gone though. What's the Underground like?

Everything comes around.... Edens Bar ...
Everything comes around.... Edens Bar was one of my favourite pet hates, I had never accepted it as a legitimate live music venue - could never find a good place to listen to what was vaguely being represented & reproduced through the meagre PA; could never successfully negotiate the urine puddles in the bathrooms; could never find a cold beer from the uncomprehending bar staff; could never stop thinking back to the old glory days when it was called Legends and had a big, fun, gay lifestyle...and so, I would always turn up to the place verrry drunk, which took the edge off being in this quite depressing/desperate spot. In my opinion, if the owners do in fact renovate, it can only be for the best. If it has closed, perhaps only Blink will mourn the loss of this utter shithole.
In the meantime, we have the Schooner Tavern downtown where there is more than a hint of hot wharf action, a kerbside smoker's lounge, a feasible bar offering big bottles of beer and a very small toilet. The carpet is fabulous. The staff are amiable, and don't flinch at all while Avotor perform their minimalist donner und blitzen firestorm showpieces in their pub - but then, they usually serve the russian sailors, and that has to be kinda fucking scary. Did I mention the carpet already? What are you waiting for, book your band in there and make that scene a good place to be.

haha. have you not read my review of Edens in "Local Knowledge".
I think my exact words were "The garden of eden in some alternate universe where poo passes for caviar"
there is no denying I'll miss this venue, it had a certain charm.......The poo in the urinal, no rider, no toilet paper, the venue not being open when you arrive for soundcheck, the PA not working and having to gaffer tape wires together to make it work, the mic stands with no clips and that won't stay standing up, the entire venue smelling of urine, the bouncer who lets people he wants in for free, the bar having no float/stamp/inkpad/pen, the angry barwoman screaming at you if your gig finishes before 1am, the PA shitting itself halfway through a show, disasteradios mic getting stolen...ah....so many great memorys.

Yeah, there is also that whole point of view, of course - the (non)events that generally happen behind the scenes out of the mind's eye of any actual punter. I had not previously mentioned those, as I'm a punter, and I go out to live music events to have a freaky naughty good time. Standing in urine - that's not on my happy list, buddy.

yeah, i have a little doorkit now, but i didn't always, and most people don't, especially bands who normally book shows there.

Where are schooner and the pinnacle? I haven't heard of those two. With Edens, I'm not sure it's closed down... my band got an email from the owner or manager or someone saying that they were going to be doing renovations and would be reopening in a couple of months. I got that a while ago, more than a month I'd say... and because they'd continued to be holding gigs I'd assumed they were just renovating during the day.
They were saying they were going to give it a major rehaul and try and get rid of all the scumminess that the venue gets associated with. I think the PA was mentioned as well, although I'd assumed they'd be putting it in after - cause the acoustics are currently shit anyway.
I've just had a look for the email though and I can't find it... but yeah, I think that's what's happened, they're renovating.
I'll look forward to it!...

I'm pretty sure edens is closed...they will be doing one or 2 more weekends of shows and then thats it. If you want to know whos playing their go to cheeseontoast.co.nz and andrew has listed a show under the news and bullshit section.
Also if you want to check out schooner tavern then you should go their tomorrow night (go on monday) as US bands Weird War are doing another show there, i hear they are amazing and the door sales will be much cheaper than the show they just did at the KA on friday night : )

I want to bring my band and my friend's band to NZ to tour our new albums around August/September. We thought we could do week 1 on the North Is. and Week 2 on the South Is. Both intense, tough, emotional rock bands (not emo - think PJ Harvey/Dirty 3 for the mime set and early Elvis Costello for Colour TV) and looking for other bands to headline/support.
I'd appreciate any help on good small-med venues, guarantees/door deals, bands and logistics. I'll check back here, but feel free to email me personally.
I can reciprocate with assistance on the Australian gig scene as I work in the industry in Melbourne.
Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou.
Ms. Sam
