NZM Mixtape Club

Okay, I suggested this in another topic, but I'm going to put it out there in its own special little place. I think with the depth of knowledge and extensive record collections that we collectively have, we should definitely share the love and swap some mix CDs. Therefore, I propose we start a mix tape club.

If you're interested, post a comment here to register your interest, and email me your address (anything to hubris.co.nz gets to me). Then everyone can make a mix CD based on the theme and send however many copies as there are players to me, and I'll divide them up and send them out to everyone once I receive everyone's contributions.

Rad. As far as a theme goes, how about we kick it off with 'Mixtapes remixed' - take tracks that other people's mixtapes have helped you discover, or the very best tracks that you've put on compilations for others. If you want to make linear notes, that'd be even radder. If you think this theme is pants, but want to participate, please feel free to suggest a different theme.

Forums: The Bar,

I'm in for this. I like getting stuff in the mail so I'm sure I could manage to make at least one mixtape for this cause.

Awesome, I must have your address in my records already probably.

yeah well you did send me a valentine last year so I assume iyou have it around somewhere

You're a Hubrette, you will be in my masterbase.

well that makes me feel special

hmmm i've been working on my mix for all of 5 minutes and I already want to put on 2 songs by the same artist. I already have figured a way to cheat my way round this rule once, but I don't know that it will be easy to get away with it twice.

Great idea Jo- Any limits on number of songs? I mean, there's room for hundreds on a cd, but traditionally a mix tape would have 8 to 10 tracks- I reckon limit it to 10 of the best, yeah?

I think the best albums most commonly have eleven tracks on them (but I can't name any off the top of my head), so how about 11 as a limit?

I made one last night and its 12 tracks... and I don't think i could possibly cull anything from it
:)

You could cheat and call the last track the hidden track?

// linear notes

:D

I can't really get involved from Tokyo, but I hope it goes well.

On another site I like they had a deliberately nostalgic C90 tape swap... there was fruitful discussion about whether to let the last song on each side cut off, and I think it was a rule you couldn't use a computer in the creation of the cover - handwritten tracklisting and/or biro drawn/photocopied/old school cut & paste action all the way.

YEAH dawg, keepin it old skool!

Yes yes y'all. I have such fond memories of some friends' weird dubbed cassettes, parts of ads from Women's Weekly or whatever, chopped out in such a way that they became quite abstract...

I used to draw versions of the covers of tapes I dubbed from friends in colour pencil, ffs! Probably about as faithful as the tape dubbing process, I guess. :D

Chuck Norris is good, but check out these bad boys:

ARGH, sorry, that link seems to have been replaced with weird robot generated text!? It used to be an archive of scanned cassettes... so many flashbacks to be had, looking at these limited run TEAC and TDK numbers.

Some hipster did a mixtapes coffee table book recently... Thurston Moore, I think?

I had a mate give me a couple of The Clash/Sex Pistols mix tapes back in 5th form- he was the only kid in school with a mohawk, and he'd decorated the covers with magazine cutouts 'n stuff... but I will always remember the coloured pencil cover from a dubbed version of FNM's The Real Thing- my mate must've spent ages on it, he was pretty good at art and the cover looked really convincing.

//I can't really get involved from Tokyo, but I hope it goes well

What, you can't send one package to Wellington? Whateves...

Oh, so are you meaning like a chain, i.e. I just send one CD to one person and get one CD from one other person? Or if I send enough copies for everyone you'll redistribute them all?

I got 11 tracks + 1 hidden track ready to rock.

Rad, I have mine kind of planned out in my head.

Sorry for late reply, but Jet yes you right, Thurston Moore was/is involved in a book on the subject. I have it in front of me, it is called 'Mix Tape: The Art of Cassette Culture' and is edited by TM. Published by Universe Pub, here's the website, www.rizzoliusa.com - out of New York. My brother sent a copy, bless his heart. I love it, from the embossed covers (the 'Compact Cassette' tape reel holes are sunken into the cardboard, front and back) to the appearance of NZ tracks on these US mixtape tracklistings: Able Tasmans, Tall Dwarfs, JPS, Psycho Daisies!! (kudos Byron Coley, kudos)

ooh ooh i'm in!

count me in...!

Totally in.

I'd like to be in .... have no idea what I'll put on the thing, but I'll see what I can come up with over the weekend .. I'll get the posting details once done if that's okay Joanna .. ?

Yeah that's rad, i figure I'll give it til sunday to count up how many people want in, and then post on monday with total numbers, and y'all can email me then and give me your addresses unless you're a hubrette and I already have them and I can check what my PO box is. Then about a week to make the cd and get to me, but obviosuly there's two coming from England so that'll take a little longer, then a couple'o days for me to get my shit together and get everyone's out to the postoffice. Radsicles.

I'll put £10 in my parcel so you can send over the other's cd's ... save you paying, I don't think its fair really, do you think that'll be enough ? To behonest with you I don't have any mix tapes/CD's so can I just put a few songs I like on ? maybe one or two of unsigned people I know of over here .. or would that be out of the required remit ?

You don't need to send money, and if you do, I'm going to put it right back in the envelope and send it back to you.

But please feel free to put other things on it. It'd be good to hear some stuff from the underground there before it becomes all big, and then we can be like "oh that band? They're so 2006".

:-) so 2006, some of these unsigned things go back to the late 90's early 2000's, somehow I'm not sure they'll ever be heard outside of the comp CD, but they're mates so I figure I owe them alittle international exposure .. and as for the money .. I'll send it right back .. ;-)

Send it to me if you want, I'll totally spend it.

Sent, posted yesterday, so you should have 10 CD's arriving sometime in the next 5 days or so Jo, I sent them "signed for international" so hope they don't mind signing at the PO box place .. or is it an staffed place ..?? either way I'm sure they'll get to you .. you'll have one extra to pass onto someone else, I sent Foetus's by mistake, only realised what I'd done when I saw him yesterday evening ...

Cheers for the CDs, Wainui, I got them this morning, and they sound rad. I love the way that it's so different from the sort of stuff that I will be sending out, which will be different from what other people are doing, etc.

I hope the rest of the club's getting cracking - I mean these ones came over from England and some of you work around the corner from me and I haven't got yours yet...

hey i sent mine last tues.... so they should have arrived by now...

Glad you got them .. as I said it's not the rockiest CD ever, but I tried to vary it alittle, plus get a few bits of my mates stuff out there .. :-) the song by Ben was a bad choice it's got an annoying clapping thing running along in the background .. oh well ...!!!

//hey i sent mine last tues.... so they should have arrived by now...

I got yours this morning, cheers Jaffa - I'm loving the Blonde Redhead...

great idea, i love mixed tapes.
count me in!

Please tell me you're going to be including // I love the Arcade Fire's version of 'Maps' by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

I certainly will!
:)

Hurray, we've got eleven members now, so I'm going to close up membership for this round, so that everyone only has to make ten copies of their CD. The people playing (this time?) are:

Joanna
Franrose
Trixie
Dragstrip
Libra
White Rhino
Stefan
Foetusboy
Wainuiamata
Pixel
Jaffa

Youse guys can send me your CDs to: Joanna McLeod, PO Box 19090, Wellington. If you haven't already emailed me your postal address, you should do that also, and get cracking on those CDs. Radsicles.

Ok cool. Just so you know, I'm going with the theme "Music I like" as I haven't done one of these since I was little. For the record, here's an approximation of the last mix tape I did:

U Can't Touch this (Hammer)
Nothing Compares 2 U (Sinead Oconnor - great song)
Eagle Rock (Daddy Cool)
Strokin' (Clarence Carter - the first song I ever really loved)
U Can't Touch This (Recorded sped up so it sounded like Chipmunks singing it)
Hold On (wilson Philips)
I've Got The Power (Black Box?)

This feels like the beginning of a good thread...

I've Got The Power (Black Box?)

Nah, that was Snap, Black Box did 'Pushin Right On Time.'

Comp CD done, packaged and ready for the post tomorrow ten copies as requested, with a small note on each song .. it's not too rock I'm afraid, and there's a few of the " unsigned " on it too, but hoprfully you'll all find something you like, or not heard before by an artist your already aware of ...

I'm going to advance apologise.

I won't be able to make them before sunday so they'll be in the post next week...

I've started working for the ministry of health (i know, nothing to do with my degree), I've got my grad ceremony on friday and my folks are in town and staying at my place (its also mum's birthday this week) and Into the void are playing at the media club this weekend which I have some semi involvment with. I don't think I'll even have a chance to buy blank cds before the weekend.

But I PROMISE to send them next week.

Sweet as, I've been distracted making another zine anyways, and I'm sure Wainui and Foetus's will take a while to come through.

Congrats on the job, that's rad!

I'm in a transitory situation at the moment too- might end up posting my mix from the UK but getting them sent to a NZ c/o address. I'll drop you a line shortly to confirm Jo.

Of course, the other thing is that I keep changing my mind about the tracklisting... it's either 'nah, they all would've heard that one before,' or 'nah, NO-ONE would've heard of that one before.' I want it to rep-rah-zent, is all.

foetus, I wouldn't worry too much about people not having heard of one or two of your tracks .. I can guarantee no one apart from maybe me would have heard half the tracks on mine .. and as to weather anyone's going to like any of them ... I have no idea .. some are pretty basic ..

You're right- I'll channel this energy into making some cool mix tape covers for everyone. Random magazine cut outs, etc...

yes pls.

Oh maaaaan, read the post right above you!

Whoops. I would have been in but I've been in un-internet land.

*sits outside in the cold*

(Jo hook me up with Maps bro..)
