Two of my biggest pet peeves are assholes who complain about a $5 door charge, and then proceed to get royally pissed at $5 a beer. And "scenesters" who expect to get in for free to every gig, as if their presence at a gig is in itself worth the $10 to get in. Oh and while I'm at it, the fanboys/girls that stroll backstage and drink a bands hard earned rider, again on the premise that their very presence is worth a beer or two.
Huh? Weird... I hadn't seen this poll till just now! Everything looks normal to me though, dude.
FWIW, I put down 5, but it's been 5 for years now with no inflation- add/subtract cost of living dependant on which city you're in too... No koha option?
...actually, I wouldn't pay less than 5 no matter where the gig was, and completely understandable bumping it up a few bucks for higher cost of living in the big cities.
I put $10, I think that's a resonable price to pay if the venue's giving the bands a cut of the door takings, if not then it should be free, why should a venue make door money for bands who get punters in, buying drinks etc and the bands get nothing in return. And yeah I agree with pieeater, think I've had a rant about that once before .. no matter who it is, if your not on the guest list .. you pay.
The Dux (in the 03) doesn't charge unless the band is quite well know. Why should anyone else? In fact I would rather people didn't have to pay to get into any gigs I'm playing at - No door charge = more people comming in the door.
When people start actually knowing a bit about a band, that's when you can charge I rekon.
so you'd rather that bands LOSE MONEY when putting on a show? the dux is a rare exception in NZ venues, and many (such as myself) feel their free gig policy is a bad thing
Yep was thinking that myself - door charge is usually used to recoop costs for smaller bands, little profit in it. Costs can mount up pretty quick, $150 for postering + $100 - $150 sound guy for a gig would sink most small bands if they didn't have a chance to cover those costs.
the dux also PAYS headlining bands to play there.
Hence the band can afford to have no cover charge on the door. As far as I know other venues don't pay bands to play, and I suspect the dux can afford it because of the restaurant and multiple bars it has on site.
also - relying on the bar to pay bands means that your enforcing drinking culture. don't you think it would be better for gig-goers to be their primarily for the MUSIC, not the BOOZE?
Unknown bands need to do the hard yards to ensure people actually hear about them. If that means wearing costs and playing for free then get hard and do it.
As soon as people start knowing a bit about who you are and what you are about, then you can start charging. Hell, all I want to do is play - I don't expect people to pay for the pleasure of listening to my band that they have never heard of. And there's nothing wrong with having a few while listening to music. Makes for a much more enjoyable night.
I would (and have) gladly paid $15 to see an "unknown" band.
Live music is undervalued in NZ.
How many of you guys have put your heart and soul into preparing
for a gig, knowing you have a great product and then lost money
while the punters flock to the mind numbingly boring disco club
down the street where the only talent to be seen is jailbait.
$5. It's the cost of a single ...
$5.
It's the cost of a single bottle beer from the bar.
You'd probably pay $10+ to see an 'unknown quantity' film at the theatre - why should live music be any different?
