Um, so every time I read a post on here or talk to someone who likes certain artists I actually get angry. Like I get a bit of a twist in my guts, the adrenalin starts kicking in, and I feel this urge to post some "aaaaargh!!! they're so shit!!!" type response. grim_entropy styles.
Does anyone else get this kind of reaction to other people's tastes? ( If not, I could try to provoke it... ;) )
For me it's generally artists who are acclaimed and popular among people who think pop radio sucks. So it's something about undeservedness. But still, what's it all about? Why get angry at someone having different taste from you? I try to constantly remind myself we live in an unjust and generally arbitrary world, but still something somewhere in me says "it's not fair, this music is shit, why aren't people listening to this other good stuff?"
Um, yeah. Consider this venting in public. :)

Haha, yeah but that's exactly what I don't want to be. Um, holier than thou, that is, although I've got no desire to be 13 again either...

Something that does irk me, though it makes me more sad than angry, is the preponderance of classified ads looking for band members that contain Tool & The Mars Volta. There seems to be so many of them that at times I've thought about going through the last years ads to work out the ratio. I have my suspicions it would be around 95% [Noizyboy?]. Then it makes me wonder whether listening to tool makes you want to form a band, or whether there's some unwritten rule that say's if you want prospective band members to take you seriously you've got to put Tool in your influences list, and then I think that if that is the case it's a very sad world indeed.
Or maybe it's just that those crappy Guitar Player mags that the youngfolk read have lots of Tool tabs in them, like they had lots of Rush and Yngwie Malsteem tabs in them when I was reading them.

// alot of people here are like 13
I don't think that's true of the average age of regular posters (ie those that get taken seriously, or at least taken notice of). Most of the people I read (and have met) would have an average age of late 20s.

I get like that when someone in the flat puts on one of their CDs in the lounge... to them, it just plays in the background, making them feel relaxed and at ease. For me, no matter what volume it's at, if it's shit then it will thump it's way violently into my skull, driving me to within an inch of an embarassing outburst. I normally become very antisocial/go for a walk/try to avoid 'whose stereo is the loudest' competitions...

Strangely this topic makes me mildly 'angry'! I've always found it hard to contain my anger with people who feel they know "the list of goodness", and that they have been graced by good taste.
Actually I'm suprised Jet, but great topic!

Ditto. Jet, I respect your honesty, and I'm rather grateful that you able to contain your wrath. Probably top of my nzm list of Things That Make Me Go Mad is people trawling through the classifieds or artist profiles posting angry comments about people's taste in music.
Granted, being subjected to certain bands makes me something something - if someone insisted on putting on Jack Johnson at work, there'd probably be complaint to OSH, or a fistfight. But if someone just says they like them then I wouldn't take it as a personal affront. It's usually just a bit of a conversation killer: "oh, that's nice, (confused look) how's that working out for you, then?"
I used to get really passionate about "converting" people to my musical tastes, I think for me if someone disliked a band I liked, or liked a band I really hated, then it'd cause some kind of 'does not compute' trigger in my head "WHYYY??? I DON'T UNDERSTAAAAAAND!!!", like if you think too long about the WTO and dying babies in the third world. But I think now I just accept that different people are attracted to different things, even though I may never quite understand what those qualities are - y'know, like a blind person trying to work out what's so exciting about art.
That said, Nickelback should never have existed.
//But I think now I just accept that ...
//But I think now I just accept that different people are attracted to different things, even though I may never quite understand what those qualities are
..I think that's mainly been prompted firstly by how much my own tastes have changed, and secondly liking a bunch of bands that I'm embarrassed to admit. If I'm going to be honest and shameless about my own tastes, it's hard to condemn anyone else for bad judgement.

I get this all the time, when people whose taste I generally like and respect say something like "oh the Fast Crew are really cool" and I'll be like what? Huh? How? I don't understand how you can be so cool in every other respect and yet like them. And yes, I have no problem with being holier than thou, although normally I'll try to repress it a little.
On a similar note, I got into a huge fight with my friend last night about politics, and I was thinking on the inside "I don't understand how you can be someone that I'm friends with and yet think like this".

I'm thinking that one of the best parts of having friends into music as much as you are is how much stuff they like that you don't. The bonus is also when you come round on a track. A distant second though to when you both like something that is way uncool - thats the best.

Heh, well that's the thing, I get pissed off by the same bitching and slagging that Heather describes, so I avoid acting on it... For me to wage war on the bands I don't like would be as lame as all the "hip-hop sux" posts.
Just to clarify, I don't get this with many things, like, for example, I don't really like Shihad, but I certainly don't get angry about other people's enthusiasm for them. I guess it's that they do what they do well, whereas I get all grumpy about people who like a popular example of a style or genre that's not so well known, when I reckon the real gold is to be found by digging a bit further.
I was hoping this'd get some interesting responses, so thanks all.

To side-track my own thread, thinking about what Dust and then Franrose wrote, I always thought it must be really full on to write music with a partner, particularly where it's just the two of you. Bands I've been in have got that relationship-like intensity in the past, I can't imagine what that's like coupled with a romantic thing.

Annnnnd about mix CDs - a year or two back a friend organised a big swap. Everyone interested made a mix CD and copied enough for all the other friends involved. Then we all met at a pub, swapped CDs and had some drinks. I think there were 7 of us doing the swap, so each of us left with 6 cds of stuff and a better feel for what the hell we all listen to. My friend who was a hip-hop DJ came through with stuff by the Kinks, Yes (??) and Teenage Fanclub. The friend who organised it is someone I could enthuse about Iron & Wine with and he came through with a dancehall mix.

I used to get really angry about what I thought was silly music too, but then I became tired of fighting it, so I decided to attended the Parachute music Feasterville to try to get a real feel for what I was... dare I say it missing out on. It was a mind-blowing experience and has given me a whole new appreciation for music. I have since been switched on to other obscure yet great bands I had no idea where out there. Last week when I went out to soundz to hunt for an album by this underground punk band called Goodnight Nurse (Great band BTW and really nice guys too I’m sure) I found a single in the bargain bin called Danger Zone by this cat named Kenny Logins. FANTASTIC!! I am really quite stoked with the efforts I’ve made and inturn it's given me a whole new positive outlook on music and on life in general.

Curious!
I hope they mention David Gray during the bit on serious torture. I read US troops have tortured prisoners in Iraq by subjecting them to a very loud, sustained loop of the one word title of 'Babylon' for hours and hours on end.

I always feel out of touch with other people's music tastes, especially when someone asks me what I am listening to on my iPod. I pause, knowing full well they will have no idea about the band I'm listening to. I usually get the 'oh' response. No one ever asks me when I am listening to Foo Fighters or Kanye West.
Ergo, I try and keep out of music arguments. I will however make mocking remarks in good jest, if I see fit. However, that been said I will defend Britney Spear's 'Toxic' as being a really good pop song.

i get frustrated with people with no particular taste in music, the ones that go: "i like all sorts of music" or "i don't really care"... even more than people who like music i don't like, 'cos at least with those people you can talk about why they like the music they do

I've agreed with you on practically nothing, ever, but I agree with you on this. They say, oh, I like everything, and I mention disco or funk and they draw a blank (I feel asking them about any classical music is just too mean). What they actually mean is they are happy with everything mainstream, probably a nice mix as featured on the Edge.
I don't usually get THAT frustrated ...
I don't usually get THAT frustrated when people are on the crap music trip... because most of the time I know I'm right (KNOW I'm right) and they'll eventually succumb to the shame of wasting their money (see: ex-flatmate purchasing Pink CD). Usually I just make no comment... or in the case of this current flat, hide in my room listening to my own music while my flatmate watches Bollywood movies all day long.
And I take this politeness further when presented with mix-CDs. A boy at work has made me quite a few and while some of the bands have been taste changers (I'll be forever in his debt for giving me the gift of Interpol and Wilco)... some of them make my ears bleed. And I never say anything. Yet when the mix-CD is thrown his way he'll mention the stuff he hates and then I'll feel like I need to tell him ... "oh? yeah...I thought your friends band was SHIT mate..." and then walk off muttering "stupid motherfucker.. how can he say such hurtful things about eddie vedder??"
Heh.
My ex-boyfriend was one to criticize first...and it's like getting blood out of a stone to get him to admit he enjoyed anything. Actually I've found that with boys in general.
Why is that?
WHY!!?
I love mix-cds and i looooooooooooooooooooooove discovering new bands so i'm all for jo's idea.. .though I have seen some questionable cds in her collection.
I think I'm immune to it all now. I work in an office where you can usually hear about 4 different p top 40 pop radio-raped songs blaring around each corner of the office. i just zone out put my discman on.

I think really all my rage comes down to the fact I think of indie as this massive evil cess pool, from which occasional things of beauty surface. I have to put defensive disclaimers around the indie music I like, in the same way Stefan does about Britney's 'Toxic'.
Fuck man, Wilco. The rage. THE RAGE!!!
So yeah, I'm just at odds with a lot of the regulars, wrt taste, and that's a bit frustrating sometimes cos I enjoy reading what yous write.
