Dream Gig Line Up

I was just thinking about how much influence these sorts of forums can have over local promoters. Tell them, they will bring them, kinda.

If you could have a one night show, 4 bands from anywhere (still a current gigging band though) who would you have?

Forums: NZ Music,

I recently missed out on seeing Broken Social Scene and Les Savy Fav on the same bill.

I'd have Batrider, The Insurgents, Blackmarket Art and Tragedy of the Commons.

OH WAIT ON

Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens (and his cheerleaders) Boards of Canada, Mogwai.
see EMI have just got NZ distribution of Spunk? i vote Rhythmethod. mmmm.
I do notice that a whole lot more bands are coming this year, and not just stopping at Austalia. Or is this just the season for it and i've got a short memory?
U2 have just postponed their tour here too, incase that hasn't been mentioned...

Thats a solid gig making me feel funny in the tummy

Bloc Party, TV on the Radio. These are all the things that BDO DID NOT do for me....
locally i'm excited about Grayson Gilmour getting a band together to play his solo stuff.

and Wolf Parade.

I'd REALLY REALLY like to see Fun Lovin Criminals supported by Louis XIV.

And Supergrass, the Go! Team & Shakespeares Sister. (Didn't go BDO, Go! Team are my one regret).

OOO, and on the decks, a Lemon Jelly / Aphex Twin combo would be the coolest thing ever ever ever!

Shakespears [sic] Sister :)

Junior Boys
Mouse On Mars
Common
Maybe The Books?

Curious, none of that makes me too excited. It'd be much easier for me to list 4 DJs who would play selections from 200 acts I'd like to hear.

I reckon part of the definition of indie has got to be not about the music itself but about being enthused about the live scene, eh? I think traditionally the same goes for "NZ music" fans. When I was at uni if I met someone and they said they liked "New Zealand music" it meant they liked going to see Bilge Festival or Letterbox Lambs or whoever else at Bodega, not much to do with their music collection necessarily.

Always feeling a touch outta place on here for most of my tastes (but still loving enough NZ music and enough NZM regulars to stick around), I clicked that one of the reasons is that most of the music I like is ... well, maybe not no fun live, but live performance is pretty irrelevant to it.

I think Erlend Øye would put on a good show. But then so would Mariah Carey!? So who knows.

Godspeed You Black Emperor, M83, Modest Mouse, The Books.

mmm.

oooh ooh yeah, m83. With Boom Bip aswell. How would the books be good live?
I'd put the Cure on that bill too.

The Books are supposed to be great live, but presumably really unlike their recorded stuff.

Been googling "indie cred" again blink?

"I was just thinking about how much influence these sorts of forums can have over local promoters. Tell them, they will bring them, kinda"

you are kidding ? or are you on drugs ? the amount of influence is around zero... Most promoters in NZ get offered artists rather than sourcing them... but you knew that... oh no you didn't!!!

Fair enough. We must know different promoters. But wait ... you sound like you know everyone.. oh no maybe you don't?

hehe its not really about that, its about a good 'fantasy' gig is all

Geez Sicoff, didn't you hear us cry out for Bombfunk? And the promoters got them, and delivered them, and lo, we were all satiated.

i know that liberation requested the Kills specifically- they werent' coming anywhere near here before Maria from Liberation hooked it up. There are promoters like Mysterygirl who CARe... And i'm pretty sure if people like her didn't care, we wouldn't see some of the acts we're seeing- they'd only make it to Australia.

// you are kidding ? or are you on drugs ? the amount of influence is around zero

ummm..I'm a promoter, and well, considering my entire LIFE is influenced by these forums, they do have some influence on who i take on tour...and bring from overseas. I am bringing a few international artists over this year (yes...bringing over, not being "offered" and peoples opinions on this site make a direct ifluence in that)

though, I do appreciate that a forum like this is very unlikely to instigate any interest....other then , if like 50 people put The Books or M83 in their list, then maybe I'd make more then a hamfisted effort at trying to get either of those artists to come over.

That was some seriously funny shit Joanna. I giggled through my corn chips.

//my entire LIFE is influenced by these forums

come on man, you're worth more than that...

Honestly, I wouldn't want to go to a four band gig, unless it was in a cabaret type sit-down environment, so working with that, I'd go for Bic Runga, Nick Cave, Tom McRae and ummm Tori Amos.

Iron Maiden
Kiss
Aerosmith
Depeche Mode

Beck, Nick Cave, David Byrne and Gorillaz.

Batrider
Queens of the Stone Age.
Death Cab for Cutie.
Explosions in the Sky.

Fin.

I am fucking amped for Batrider. Most underrated NZ band ever.

Bjork, Daft Punk, MF Doom, Death From Above 1979, Modest Mouse, NIN, of Montreal, Polysics, Radiohead, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, The Faint, The Hives, Hrishikesh Hirway, The Perceptionists, The Pixies, TV on the Radio, The Roots, David Bowie...

I'm pretty sure thats over 4.

Over a week of non-stop gigs.

Four acts no fair - how about four NZ bands one night, and then Four international the next? Or is that cheating? Oh, well, tough shit!
NZ night would have to be, in no particular order
Dave Dobbyn - no talking just singing
Phoenix Foundation
Confucius cos he's wicked funky OR Nathan Haines OR Mark de Clive Lowe cos I like me some jazz
Mahinaarangi Tocker

International Night, we'll have -
Lemon Jelly - lots of the Lost Horizon songs, thanks
Al Jareau and George Benson (can that count as one?)
the members of the Buena Vista Social Club who are still alive
The Kings of Convenience

hooray for Benson and Tocker.

Dragstrip
Odessa
Ishtar
and of course, John Rowles, as long as he performs
"Hush not a word to Mary".

robbie williams
geri halliwell
modest mouse
velvet revolver

Very very tough. I'm gonna add the clause for my list that even though these bands must still be gigging, I can see them at their peak.

GnR
ATDI (they're all still gigging in a sense)
Immortal Technique
Spice Girls (again, I'm sure they're all working in some way)

I wanna see a Geri/Axel duet

Oh, believe me Jo, I have great things planned for this gig.

Set lists? Will they be playing 'Rocket Queen'? They'd better!

Let's just say it involves Axl's confederate flag cape and Geri co-opting the lyrics during Civil War 'My hands are tied'.

Also Slash and Cedric to have a dance-off to an Immortal freestyle.

oh please don't put geri with axl!!

i think she would be best suited to slash & duff.

Hot Ginga Axel, not fat braided buckethead Axel. It'll be a firey combination.

the flaming lips
the white stripes
the arcade fire
black rebel motorcycle club

OR

calexico
bright eyes
the decemberists
neutral milk hotel

and, screw the rules cos I'd love to see Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliot Smith, Grandaddy and Mclusky. OH and Faith No More !!!

oops. behold my neutral milk hotel confusion.

//Elliot Smith, Grandaddy

the rule of "still a current gigging" may rule these two out.

//and, screw the rules cos

nice opening act to ease into things, then someone to get excited about, into an old favourite, then classic finale...

The Presests
The Knife

but that's this week... next week it could be
