Forums: NZ Music,

This place seems to have certainly changed.

We sell very good pies!

how well does an african dance party go down in welly?

can you tell me a little more about it please, i'm quite interested.

Speaking of African dance party, check out Konono No. 1. This is the shiz.

Thomas Banda (VSA) and Dehji Akran with the help of friends bring African music which is DJ'd. Next month will be the first Mainstage Dance Party which will hopefully feature live performance for the first time as well as an appropriate light show.

The music is strictly African rather than music with African influence upon it.

The audience always know how to have a good time!

The programme begins at 9pm with parents and grandparents in attendance - it is very sociable and a great time to share platters of food. From 10pm the crowd changes and the dance party begins with a great mix of peoples and music.

Next month will double as a fundraising show for the Wellington Zimbabwe soccer team.

rock n roll!

That is very weird music dust, i was trying to imagine a scenario when or where you would listen to that? apart from the Bodega African Dance Party of course.

Tonight is going to be so good!

Mainstage Bodega - The Nudie Suits, Tom Guy and Band as well as LiL' Chief DJs

Underground in Room 101 - Mad Max, The Desentors and Vitus Dance.

Tim Guy?

Do you work behind the bar Tane?

mmmmmmmmmm, sometimes!

But I am soooo slow that the bar staff would prefer that I didn't

At least you know how to pour a beer now Tane!!!!! Now, lets get onto stealing customers...its not on really you really need to pull your head in in that department. Perhaps Adam could give you a tutorial, perhaps over a steak and oyster pie.

If you re-read that you might find that it doesn't make complete sense.............!)@(#*$&%^

You don't make sense. Perhaps we should have fish and chips sometime. Perhaps tomorrow at 8. I heard its the Listening Post on at Bar Bodega!!!!

I often don't make sense................. people must think taht I am a 24 hour drunk.

Ok - come and dine with me at 8pm - fish n chips it is. Damn, Aro Street is closed on Mondays. I wonder if anyone else would like to koin us for fish n chips AND bring along IPODS, DVDs, CDs and vinyl to play while we munch.

Put in your orders by forum message, email, phone or in-person by 7.15pm so that we can eat together at Bar Bodega - 101 Ghuznee Street, Wellington.

It sounds kinda uncool but think of it like a 21st with a family time at the start with the real party kicking in later!

nothing un-cool about my grandma man

I reckon it's all good!

:-)

I haven't spoken with Black Sabbath however I did enjoy chatting with Nickelback!

We have a few spaces in our calendar so make sure to stop by for a drink or send an email. We also love getting your demos - we play them on Monday nights and make compilations of original kiwi music for between gigs and between 5pm and 9pm every day.

Last night - Pete White from the UK with Steve Austin were amazing at Open Mic. We have been very lucky that the bands, soloists and performers in general have been so good. (Apart from the street poets that we now actively discourage!!!)

Wednesday: Lou Barlow (USA) with Ghostplane. Downstairs in Room 101: NORT, Cop Car and Stingfish

Only 110 places left. There weren't tickets for Lou Barlow as such, but so many people have asked to prepay that their Eftpos prepayment has doubled as a ticket of sorts - $25

What hapenned with The Misfits gig at Bodega? And Batrider?

What's going on Bodega?! I'm conffused!!

Batrider asked for Thursday March 23 for them and Witch Hats. I kept the date open for them and heard nothing to the contrary until seeing posters and Batriders MySpace.

I contacted the Misfits one night and chatted for 24 hours negotiating a NZ show as they said there were none. It turns out that several people had attempted to arrange NZ shows unsuccessfully. The band were very happy (and excited) to do a show at Bodega.

The night that I spoke with the band and their management, another NZ promoter was speakign with The Misfits Australian promoter. The Australian promoter had rights to do a certain number of shows and assumed exclusivity for NZ which is a different territory.

The Misfits did not know about the Aussie promoters plans for NZ shows when they agreed to doing a Bodega show. In the end we decided after hearing that deposits and planning for promo etc etc etc had already been committed to two NZ shows to drop pursuing it even though it would have been wonderful to do.

At one point it was implied that the other NZ promoters may do the show at Bodega but a misfortunate set of misunderstandings, mostly still due to The Misfits not knowing about NZ plans created (what I understand now) unneccessary ill feeling.

It is interesting that by doing one show at Bodega the Misfits could have taken nearly triple their standard fee (if 500 tickets sold) than doing two shows because of the lucrative and equitable % of door structure offered.

By the way - I LOVE pies.

Anyhow, we have a wonderful show tonight, last week with David Pjo, earlier with The Brunettes and the week preceeding hosting Damo Suzuki and some of NZs very best musicians.................. we are doing some great things and have many cool shows every week booked right through to July.

Sorry for any confusion - it is all about communication and I can only publish what I know.

PS - regarding The Misfits at Bodega - I only ever said that it was subject to confirmation. Maybe I should have signed a contract earlier - that would have really caused some trouble - but not for us!

It is a good thing that we are so reasonable!

Cheers,

Tane

Come and watch The Bouncing Sould next Friday :-)

//PS - regarding The Misfits at Bodega - I only ever said that it was subject to confirmation. Maybe I should have signed a contract earlier - that would have really caused some trouble - but not for us!

Yeah maybe you should have.
Saying something is "subject to confirmation" but advertising it anyway is a total cop-out btw.
"Black Sabbath at Bodega Friday March 24th! (subject to confirmation)". This kind of shit doesn't wash I'm afraid. It reeks of trying to get free advertising for your Bar, but all your actually doing is giving it an even worse rep than what it's already got. I think you are a danger to the music scene Mr. Mcleay.
Could this latest Misfits debacle be a lesson for you to CONFIRM YOUR SHIT BEFORE POSTING IT HERE!?
I'm guessing probably not.

http://www.sortyrshitoutidiot.com ]

I mean seriously herb, Tane had said (really clearly) TO BE CONFIRMED - which to most people would mean 'We're trying to organise for these guys to play but it's not all sorted out yet, heres what's been proposed, be aware that it may fall through or change'. If it was up on posters all over town then fair enough (maybe) - but it's on a free internet forum and it's not like you have been mislead.

Would you have lashed out at Tane in the same way if the band HAD confirmed the gig and then bailed out for whatever reason?

Thanks Scott. I think you've missed the point of my post. My point was any monkey can put "TBC" on a "gig guide" when they haven't actually even had any contact with the band (hence my attempt at humour with the Sabbath "listing"). I was trying to make a point that it's ok to use "TBC" in regards to support act and possibly date, but definitely NOT whether the band is actually perfoming at the venue. Have you seen any other venue do this? No. Because it is unprofessional and unethical and from what I've heard this isn't the only unetical thing this character is up to, right back to when he put on his 'Wellington music Seminar' thingy.
//Would you have lashed out at Tane in the same way if the band HAD confirmed the gig and then bailed out for whatever reason?
No i wouldn't, but this isn't what is happening. He's becoming notorious for this.
Can you guess which way i voted in his poll?

//He's becoming notorious for this.

Actually Bodega has always been notorious for double booking, changed bookings, misadvertising and generally being shambolic. I've shown up for gigs only to be told they changed the booking a week ago and didn't bother advising the bands (you can image their reaction when I said 'fine - so you'll recompensate us for the advertising costs we've laid out'!!)

//It is a shame that you haven't understood any of the explanation as it makes the situation quite clear.
I understand your "explainations", I'm just questioning the honesty of them.
//Perhaps you would like me to post screenshots of all the correspondence? Particularly the one describing the NZ promoters as a hoax and charlatans!
Yes that would be good, thanks.

//I spoke with the band not knowing taht two other kiwis were talking to the Aussie promoter that hadn't spoken with the band about any NZ shows.
SO DON'T POST IT ON YOUR GIG GUIDE UNTIL THE DEAL IS SIGN SEALED AND DELIVERED.
//Now the band are playing at the bath house which suits their horror image well!
Miaowch!

I think you'd have a promising career as a politician when you've burnt every bridge in the music industry Mr. Mcleay.
Would you care to comment on the allegations that the Misfits legal/management never want to book another show in Wellington let alone your venue because of their dealings with you?
What about the allegations that you told a band that it would be "cool" with the Indigo/Bath house people if they booked with you as Indigo/Bath house was "closed on that night anyway" (when it wasn't).

Cheers dude... Actually I have seen many many venues do this over the years - yes it is less than professional - but this is NZ and a lot of gigs (including internationals or touring bands) can't or don't confirm untill really close to the date (though this has been slowly changing over the last couple of years). I've been stung by it a number of times (and not just with Bodega). Also as far as I was aware Tane had been talking with the band (or promoters) so it wasn't like he was just wacking it on the gig guide to try and generate more publicity - an effort had been made.

I do know where you're coming from though - I just thought it was a bit on the nose considering he actually made the effort to at least try and organise them to get here!

[d'oh - missed the 'reply to this post' button!]

It is a shame that you haven't understood any of the explanation as it makes the situation quite clear. Perhaps you would like me to post screenshots of all the correspondence? Particularly the one describing the NZ promoters as a hoax and charlatans!

I spoke with the band not knowing taht two other kiwis were talking to the Aussie promoter that hadn't spoken with the band about any NZ shows. The band agreed to come to NZ after I spent 24 hours talking with them. After the Aussie promoter contacted the band because the NZ duo were panicked by my internet post and contatced the Aussie promoter the band said wait a moment - we want to do a Bodega show - let us sort this out.

Due to evidence of the NZ/Aussie crew having invested money I stopped pursuign the show otherwise the NZ?Aussie people were going to lose money and I wouldn't want to see someone disadvantaged unneccesarily. We had nothing to lose as such but they did.

The issue is actually only that you don't think that I spoke with the band which is untrue. It was the other two NZers that had never spoken with the band. Thye spoke with the Australian promoter who didn't have rights to NZ which is a different territory. Furthermore the Aussie promoter and the NZers simply assumed that they could work at their own pace and that no-one else was organising anything.

I was clear with them all about what the band was offered and what it took for them to agreee to do a NZ show. As I said the fee structure ensured that the band would get nearly triple their standard performance fee and the bar would break even. A satisfactory outcome for all I would have thought. However me being open and sending the offer that I made to the NZ women made them think that I was calling them inexperienced and stupid because my fee structure was so vastly different to what anyone offers yet it is simple.

It was agood faith agreement that says as long as everyone does their very best we'll be happy with .............. the formula outlined.

Now the band are playing at the bath house which suits their horror image well!

Oops hit the wrong reply button. Nice one Scott ;)

What about the allegations that you told a band that it would be "cool" with the Indigo/Bath house people if they booked with you as Indigo/Bath house was "closed on that night anyway" (when it wasn't).

That just sounds like people scrambling to protect themselves. I have no qualms about how it was dealt with. In the end a fair and equitable result was achieved.

The San Fransisco Bath-house don't have to close on anyday as long as they are offering entertainment so that wouldn't be right that I would have said they would be closed. We should be closed on religious holidays but applied for a special license to open on Good Friday and or Easter Sunday to host the act that you speak about. Clearly it wouldn't be cool with any other venue that could host a band to have it elsewhere if they were available. Now you are making these other people that should keep their business arrngements to themselves (unless they wish to appear vulnerable) to themselves.

Also subject to the most recent correspondence with the band that you speak of it is only the NZ and possibly Aussie promoter that feels that way. I have received the kindest message (through MySpace) and comment if you care to look and actually know who is who.........................

I don't think anything else needs to be said. I suppose it is understandable (though regrettable) that you believe the stories of the people that you know.

It would paint a poor light on the other parties to post the correspondence however if you are in Wellington I am happy to permit you to view it.

Regards,

Tane
