Recording a hollywood film score

I thought I'd give you an insight as to what it takes to get a film score for a major hollywood film recorded ... I won't or more to the point can't give you the technical buff as in what mic's and how many are being used e.t.c but it is Geoff foster our senior engineer doing the gig, so it's going to be alot, I can however tell you that it's recorded on a Neve 88R desk, think it's 96 channel .. you can check that out on our website. That's a line up of a recent film we did here at work .. hope I've made it sensible .. this is a large example .. normally the orchestra would be about 70 or 80 with everyone playing together brass included .. choir are pretty much always recorded separately .. That's just the players.. and yes it did sound great .. well the strings and woodwind did ..

Forums: The Bar,

Just read through .. the last bit's abit squashed together and i should have put the orchestra line up first, but if you can read through it .. and work it out, it's pretty accurate.

you have a rad job. and I thought *I* was awesome running 16 channels of softsynths through my big ol' Holden.

man, I'd hate to be the guy mixing that, from the sounds of it, those stems would come with much responsibility. . wierd though, I thought most orchestral stuff was a case of just having the right room and a useful array somewhere in the room. heh.

It'll be Geoff Foster mixing it I think, he's our senior enginneer and he's used to the responiblity of the mix, he's done a few now, if you go to our website and check out the enginneers it's got a list of the films he's worked on.

sounds really fun. is there cattering? hehe.

can you tell us the name/type of film this is for?

i mean 'catering'

:-) yeah there's catering, we have a canteen .. okay it's small but we can manage to cram about 50 or so into it, others tend to go out for lunch, resturant or pub, hampsteads full of both.

Forgot to say we have a chef, Rory he's been here about 10 years or so and he's more than alittle at fault for my weight .. :-)

wainuiomata, you lucky lucky man, i love hearing about your job. jealous as hell, but i love it.

As you say, it's a job .. :-) it pays my bills, if you or you and your band ever get to London, I'll be happy to show you around the studio anytime. It's alot of buttons and flashing lights etc, but if your interested in that sort of thing it'll be a pleasure.
