I have vivid memories of some of the meals my mum, bless her soul, used to serve up to us when I was young. While my mum is an excellent baker as a preparer of meals she did leave a lot to be desired.
Until I left home and joined the Army I didn't realise that cabbage actually had a flavour! And texture.
I enjoy food though I wouldn't describe myself as a gourmand.
I do like a good curry, steak is always acceptable and good mashed spuds are hard to beat.
So what are your favourite meals and just for balance what meal would bring back bad memories, perhaps, or would simple not be acceptable.
My favourite meal would be:
Buffalo Mozzarello & Proscuitto ham for a starter.
French Onion Soup (a bit tragic I know, but onions are good for you.)
Roast pork, gravy, apple sauce, roast spuds & mashed spuds (carbo loading for the marathon I will never run) steamed carrots, steamed cabbage with lashings of butter and fresh ground pepper and minted fresh (not frozen) peas.
Dessert would be either fresh fruit or a lemon granita.
Least favourite meal
No starter or soup. (bugger)
My mum's watery mince and over-boiled spuds (no butter and parsley) cauliflower (with no luscious cheese sauce) and canned peas (yuck!!!)
No pudding cos I didn't eat all my peas!

Erm OK, hard to reduce it to one favourite, but at the moment it would be
Starter: Thai style NZ mussels with chilli & coconut cream, a little garlic bread, washed down with a nice reisling or an ice-cold Singha.
Main: Turkish style aromatic roast NZ lamb, nice 'n rare, with mediterranean roasted vegetables and a bottle of that Beaujolais red that wainui introduced me to the other week... mmmm
Desert: I'd go to Café Cuba, just off George Street in Palmerston North (if it's still there) for a latte and a slice of their infamous 'chocolate silk cake'

Dad's mince and mixed veg on really thin, hard toast, watery & lukewarm cause I wouldn't eat it quickly enough. Mince on toast can be lovely when it's done right, but Dad runied it like no other!

One of my fravourites is a hot lamb salad with fresh black olives, cherry tomatoes, red onion and feta with an avocado oil/redwine vinager vinegrette.
Sometimes the best thing is to just to eat a pile of good meat on it's own - like roast meats, a big steak, and chicken and bacon always tastes good...sometimes you need to feed the barbarian within. A good dirty old mince pie from a dairy might also suffice.
Sometimes I can't go past the humble tomato and onion on toast.
Sometimes a nice pasta with lots of cheese hits the spot.
Sometimes a can of spag and sausages done in the microwave is all I need
Sometimes the simple stuff is more satisfying than a big fancy meal. Last night I made an eggplant, chilli and spinach curry. It was really good and hot (I got the recipie out of the paper).
Somtimes all I want to make is Polish food (Perogi, begos....mmmmm) .
My least fravourite would be a stir fry. Horrible things.

They seem to change quite a lot...but at the moment its the lunch special they do at Kazu restaurant in Wellington, that is the best deep fried tofu I have tasted in my life...and the sushi is amazing. yummm
My least favourite meal is one which has sneaky meat in it, i.e. it looks vegetarian, you take a bite and get a mouthful of bacon bits. Ew.
