Hi (male, 22)
I've just moved to wellington, looking to join or start band, playing 60s style rocknroll (libertines-esq). I can write a decent song but i'm not a great singer.
Email me at jlb1983@hotmail.com
Cheers
James
PS Where do I go in wellington to hear good bands?

They're still there... they're just resting.
Indigo have an assortment of bands ...
Indigo have an assortment of bands playing on Tuesday night - no cover charge and drink specials. Bodega have new bands playing on Wednesday night - no cover charge. Bodega also have new bands playing on stage at 12pm (sometimes on Monday) where they do a 'dress rehearsal' evaluating lighting, stagecraft, vocal technique working out good stage sound based on various 'staged' complications helping bands set up quicker etc etc etc
Wednesday to Sunday - Bodega has live music - mostly rock often two concurrent shows (ground level and basement)
Happy have all sorts ranging from experimental to rock each night they are open
Indigo have live music Friday and Saturday but varies other days however they support solo accoustic musicians with early slots Wednesday and Friday.
Valve are always supportive and you can see a whole lot of heavier music metal/punk Wednesday to Saturday
Cabaret always have quality acts 7 days per week - quieter shows normally, appropriate for dining.
Sub Nine are developing the ability to host live music but don't have a regular programme that I am aware of.
Other venues, cafes mostly do covers, are Irish bars or open minded cafes that have music as it pleases the owners.

Do you know what local bands have good followings? I want to see as much local music as i can, as long as its not metal/hardcore. Are there any ska or 70s style punk bands? What do you recommend?

//60s style rocknroll (libertines-esq)
Whilst every Libertines song is a "steal-a riff-fest", I think you'll find, If you listen carefully that the riffs come from the late 70's - early 80's, with a little bit of 50's. (mostly the Jam, The Clash, The Smiths and a bit of Chuck Berry)
And besides that, compared to Babyshambles they're shite.

drag i do appreciate thatt you are probably more in the know when it comes to garagey stuff but that babyshambles album is just that a shambles...the libertines had that great balance of fucked up genius and motivated poser that really brought them to life.

it's it's tardiness that makes it good, I think - until it degenerates into cod reggae towards the end.
Truth be known I hadn't listened toeither groups till the other week when my brother in law sent me nearly everything the two bands have ever recorded. I was suprised that the 'media whore' had any talent, and then even more suprised that I liked the babyshambles stuff, I don't normallt go for that pop epic stuff, but 'fuck forever' is infectious.
Really? I think 'fuck forever' sounds ...
Really? I think 'fuck forever' sounds like average Oasis crossed with a jug band.

maybe that's it, appalachian spunk.

dragstrip everyone steals from someone. ...
dragstrip everyone steals from someone. The Clash stole from The Who, they stole from jazz and early rocknroll. If the songs are good and have an interesting angle then who cares? libertines are very 60s sounding (kinks/small faces) as well as obviously sounding a little like The Clash (Mick Jones produced their album)
I think babyshambles are great. Cant wait to hear 'dirty pretty things'(?) Carl Barat's new band.
//Mick Jones produced their album I ...
//Mick Jones produced their album
I have my suspicions that he overdubbed some of the vocals as well, possibly while the band were unconscious.
Also check out a doco called 'who the f*** is pete doherty' it's on the net as a divx file somewhere, lots of quite funny drunken rambling.
And you're dead right people steal, it's just a matter of how well you do it, It shouldn't be too obvious. I was in a band once that had a 'policy' that we wouldn't listen to music made after 1975 so that when we did steal stuff it wouldn't be as obvious. We ended up with one song that was ripped off the 1970's network news theme - people that noticed...zero.
I sugest you go and listen to the Jam, and then listen to 'what a waster'.
