Kiwi FM: the end is nigh

Radioscope news reports that Kiwi FM is going to be closed down, and (probably) replaced by easy-listening channel The Breeze.

Anyone going to miss Kiwi? And are the powers-that-be making a decision by replacing it with an easy-listening channel?

Who listens to commercial radio, anyway?

Forums: NZ Music,

I will miss the idea.
It would be unfortunate to lose this space to an Easy-Listening channel.

On Family outings in the Van, we always listen to Radio Hauraki.
Whilst there is certainly the appeal of flashback moments the playlist can form time to time be quite eclectic or at least not obvious.

oh, and that should read...

"And are the powers-that-be making a good/bad/otherwise decision by replacing it with an easy-listening channel?"

Ill miss it. I would rather listen to Kiwi than the Guff (who guffed? its just the breeze).

I think there is a real vacume for an alternative radio station. You can't please everyone, but the current line up of stations is fairly limited. Perhaps NZ is too small to support little nich market stations and has to be focused on commercial stuff.

I suspect they did not try hard enough with Kiwi. Have they tried altering the format?

I'd have to disagree with it being alternative completely. It's a heavily playlisted commercial station owned ultimately by canwest (tv3, 4 etc). The playlist has only recently begun exploring outside of mostly commercially successful artists and even then restricts that to one track per non mainstream artist.

Yes there is a real vacuum for an alternative station - if by alternative you mean something along the lines of a less commercial and playlisted bfm for example - however that will only ever exist propped up by grants or a backer as realistically it will never be able to make money, unless it is on a limited range frequency (such as Fleet FM).

Kiwi would have had completely commercial direction unfortunately.

Real vacuum indeed. In Wellington 'alternative' radio will have a large void between RadioActive and (dare I say it) the Edge, as far as tuneable stations go anyways. Unless I'm missing something...?

// Unless I'm missing something...?

Have you tried tuning into fleet (either FM, or via the web)?

Cheese on Toast on Tuesday afternoon, and Soap Box Derby on Wednesday afternoon are a couple of good shows for picking up some new indie/alt goodness.

107.3FM in Welly.

Just tried listening on my dial-up connection and I got Sean Paul, maybe I'll try again and pick from their schedule a little more selectively...
Cheers tho!

// and pick from their schedule a little more selectively...

indeed. they're very much a DJ-driven outfit, as opposed to having a strict playlist, so what you get is totally dependent on who happens to be on at the time. Like I say, try out those two shows I mentioned above, and let me know if you stumble across any other goodies.

They podcast their shows too, for on-demand listening...

http://fleetfm.co.nz/fleetcasts.php ]

The most loose interview I've had was on Fleet... "Um, so I see on the back of this CD you've got a song called 'Invercargill'... Have you been there? What do you think of Tim Shadbolt wanting to open an international airport?" Then a series of questions about my music and how I make it, which quickly lead into lengthy explanations of what the DJ was trying to do with his music... share and share alike, I guess, but kind of unusual. Where's the sycophancy Devil Rider was talking about? ;)

//by replacing it with an easy-listening channel?

funny everytime i tried to listen my impression was that i was listening to an easy-listening station. It got more and more easy as time went by i think... i enjoyed Sam Hunt on Fri morning's - Golden.

http://www.myspace.com/ventureelectric ]

I never got to hear it, so will never know whether I was missing out or not...

I'm absolutely certain that I heard Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" on Kiwi once. Hmmm...

It was probably that HLAH song. I can't remember which one it is, but I do know that it sounds like the start of 'Taste in Men' by Placebo, as does 'Sweet Emotion'.

Excellent point. Thanks Joanna. Imagine it, though! What a scandal!

Only in Auckland. it will still broadcast in Wellington & Christchurch...

Great news I reckon. I always have a hard time tuning in my car radio to an easy listening station. Thankfully now I won't have to worry because soon every station will be easy listening, and I'll never have to miss another Celine Dion, Beatles, or other golden hit ever again! And if I do, not to worry, because chances are high they'll be playing the same song later in the day. Fantastic.

I wouldn't miss it or notice its absence. I haven't listened to the radio for more than the 10 seconds it takes those HORRID rock morning djs to wake me up and slam my hand down on my alarm clock radio.

I'd change the station only I don't know the frequency of anything decent...

The playlisting on that station was bizarre. No flow of tracks at all. I agree that we need a really good alternatove station. The only station i can handel at the moment is National. Radio Active, as dear to my heart as it is, just shits me to tears ever time I atempt to listen. Who runs all these fucking stations? Every single radio station in this country bar none sucks balls. The best two are RDU and Radio 1 but they barely scrapoe through on my harsho tasto metre. If it wssn't for the Bnet it would be a much colder climate for NZ music but Active and Bfm need to up their game coz they risk slipping into total insignificance.

...mind you I think Rip It Up has turned to the worst magazine in the history of the planet and its more popular than ever. I'm so out step its not funny. I mean I actually got excited about the Belle & Sebastian album.

I'm pretty damned happy with Radio 1 down here. In the past 3 years its got me listening to a radio station regularly for the first time since I was a kid and knew no better... always in the car in the morning (Emma's eclectic taste always presents surprises, incongruous (?) delights and a sensible listening diet. It was Wing's take on Suspicious Minds that had me smiling this morning...) and often at other times of the day too. Hell, even at home in the kitchen. There's the odd show I avoid but on the whole it's a wholesome balanced diet and not all Kiwi but sensibly proportioned and I've bought stuff or gone to gigs on the strength of hearing stuff on the Radio which for me is what it's all about rather than just filling in the vacant space between your ears each day (though it does that nicely too).

Plus Emma is really hot, in a southern way.

Just out of interest, Devil Rider, imagine your ideal radio station, one that you are PD for. Give us an idea of its sound, an hours worth of playlisting if you like.

Radio One has a few weird bits - they had a show last year which seemed to be devoted to the hosts finding their most loathed music, playing it and then slagging it off - but on the whole it has improved quite dramatically over the past couple of years, widening its musical horizons away from stuff that you can play in cafes without annoying anyone. Of course it is still not the station I would do, but its closer than any other.

SonorHead's comment about Emma reminds me that I may need to keep an even lower profile than normal, as I think I may have annoyed her last night.

Well thats putting me on the spot but i totally asked for it. I think that an ideal station would be a mix of indepth editorial that people were interested in (Like National but less stuffy and more 'youth' orientated) and then really on the money programming.

Obviously you need good hosts who can garner a little celebrity status without being cheeseballs. The host must also have good tatse in music that compliments the playlist as opposed to jarring with it.

Variety is a complicated issue on radio. Too much and you up with the Shihad followed by Shona Laing followed by Concord Dawn followed by The Bleeders followed by The Brunettes mess that is Kiwi and not enough and things can get really dull. A thing which used to piss me off so much was the afternoon DJ's on radioactive playing lots of breaks/d'n'b when there was already (in my opinion) far to much of that boring shite on the playlist. It turned the afternoons on that station into a ketamine nightmare.

Playlisting I think must reflect whats happening "NOW" in terms of NME bullshit, latest hyped DJ sub genre shit etc. But this must be a part of the bigger picture of music as a whole in terms of history, and what we must allways remember that hype does not make histiry(often). Pop music is obviously the realm of evil stations that don't even need to be assesed here (the only reason i get pissed off with Bnet/Kiwi is because they are almost good...with Bnet sometimes they are almost great) but pop music is often awesome and PD's shouldn't be afraid of putting Damian Marley next to some new Four Tet or even Sugar Babes or whatever.

.....BUT! in my ideal world we would see a vital mix of the greatest music on offer in the world today so a half hour of radio by me for Feb 06 would be something like this...

Cat Power-Love and Comunication
The Strokes-You Only Live Once
The Cars-Heartbeat City
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah-Tidal Wave
Joanna Newsom-Bridges and Balloons
Belle and Sebastian-Dress Up In You
Bonnie Prince Billy/Tortoise-Thunder Road
Dungeon Family-Follow The Light(from Roots Manuva Back To Mine)
Ole Dirty Bastard-Brooklyn Zoo
(oh gosh no nz music....cut my bloody head off)

....well i am sure that all the above music would get played on most bnet stations so its a pretty irrelevant list. But I don't know, its just that every time I listen to the radio I have to sit through track after track of tiresome crap before I hear anything i like. And after DJing at actice for about 4 years I just feel grossed out by 'radio speak'. All the sychophantic carry on you have to go through to not offend anyone...then the lame atempts to seem contoversial by being extremely offensive but only about people who would never listen to whatever sort station your hosting.

Argh i must stop this long and mental post

Oh and Emma from Radio 1 has very good taste in music and should be put in charge of the playliosts of every bnet station in NZ.

//Emma from Radio 1
Agreed. Nice girl...

//Radio Active just shits me to tears ever time I atempt to listen.
I like the ideas behind Radioactive, and I like that most stuff I hear on there I haven't heard ever before... but yeah - inappropriately timed playings of Drum and Bass (which quite frankly does not make any sense outside of a darkened club) and the overkill on Reggae are a bit hard to take sometimes.

//inappropriately timed playings of Drum and Bass (which quite frankly does not make any sense outside of a darkened club)

Isn't this what they play throughout the day as well?

I can't say I'm surprised.

I'm satisfied with bFM myself - though it's by no means a perfect station. As I've mentioned before, some of the DJs are wankers (some are thankfully a little more down-to-earth), the ads are annoying, and I can't stand Havoc - I wish he'd quit acting like a dickhead ("Hullo, cawllah!") and play more music. I breathed a sigh of relief when he left, but now that he's back, I hardly listen in the afternoons.

I listen to Classic Hits or George FM in the morning drive to work in the car, and BFM in the arvo. Not to be contrary, but I do like Mikey Havoc. Always have done. I'm quite partial to them on Saturday and Sunday mornings too. I love that their playlists seem to be reasonably eclectic. Concert FM does it for me sometimes, too, and I do enjoy Hugh Sundae on Saturdays. Did I read somewhere that that's finished now? Shame, he suits radio.

//but I do like Mikey Havoc

Same. I've always dug him. Except for that celebrity song thing last year.

// and I do enjoy Hugh Sundae on Saturdays.
// Did I read somewhere that that's finished now?

yeah, he was just hosting the 3D Radio Show - one of National Radio's summer series things. All over now, although some podcasts are kicking around, if you know where to look.

Noizyboy, you are indeed my source, and preferred port of call, for great podcasts (apart from the Ricky Gervais thing).

//Not to be contrary, but I do like Mikey Havoc//

Sorry but you ARE being contrary, there's nothing wrong with disagreeing but don't try to pretend you're not! Jeez Louise, gotta love being angsty from lack of sleep!

Just to be pedantic, Jon Jr - I was indeed disagreeing, but if I were being contrary, I would be deliberately disagreeing, just for the hell of it.

// you are indeed my source, and preferred port of call, for great podcasts

ah, cheers mate. pleased to know that someone is listening to them.

#99. I'll tell you what your album layout needs...Some titties.

About fucking time they closed it. The only problem is, they are going to replace gay shit with even gayer shit...

Sometimes, just sometimes Grim, you hit the nail on the head.

..stopped clock...twice a day...etc

apparently also applies to stuck records.

Bloody gays on the radio! Disgusting!

I thought erotic necrosis was a gay band. i looked at the website and found a bunch of photos of boys holding candles. how romantic, kinda made me think bubblegum-death metal. xo

external link ]

I dont see anything wrong with candles and there is nothing gay about any of the pics. You can fuck off, and if you want to offend my band here, I dont find anything you say offensive untill you say it to any of our faces, so we can happily send you to the emergincy ward, untill then you are just some faggot behind a computer screen.

I bet you are into rap and gangsters and spraypainting on fences anyway (your screen name suggests so), therefore your oppinion is invalid and you are waisting your time.

Homo

Whats wrong with people thinking your band is gay? Surely there are some great gay Black Death Metal bands out? I mean people always think my band is gay and I am COOL WIT DAT! 'Bring on the Pink Dollar' as the essecs at Ikea say. After I would rather be thought of as sexually inclined towards men (hey some men are hot) than be known as an out right homophobic dick who threatens people with violence. Not that I am not implying anything by that last sentence I am sure, Grim, that you are a well balanced soy milk drinking, Grey Lynn living, green party voting all round good dude who likes to rock a bit of LA era Fleetwood Mac when Dieciniostophy Child Blood just get a bit samey.

Haha, I can't beleive what I'm hearing... And for the record, there are no gay true black metal bands, if you don't beleive me do some research...

You may be cool with being a homo, good for you, I have my own oppinion which I am entitled to... Some people dont like blacks, some people dont likeseafood, I dont like homos... as simple as that

I think the word homophobic is gay, I'm not afraid of faggots but I like making fun of them,
it was made-up by some faggot to make fag haters look stupid

...

Haha, that dude needs help...

// Personally I would LOVE to see erotic narcotic take on manamana & his ice-hockey mates.

Haha, how about me and my ice hockey team mates? Infact I probably know you but cant put a name to the face... small world... Now, you can fuck off with the emergensy ward bullshit, my simple point is... Dont say on the internet what you wouldn't say to my face, otherwise you are just a faggot bich hiding behind a computer screen and your words are not worth shit...

// Grim I really didn't want to say this on a public forum but i know one of y our band members and he IS gay. You had better find out which one it is and then kill him in a burning church.

Devil Rider, I really didnt want to say this, but your mum is really a man... Seriusly, how long did it take you to think up something so clever? Have nothing better to do then to make up storeys about people? Maybe go get laid or something, take a break from that computer...

//Black Metallers are like Goths, right?

Haha, I bet you got that from the "101 ways to annoy a metal head list" :D - Cheesy

//Dont say on the internet what you wouldn't say to my face, otherwise you are just a faggot bich hiding behind a computer screen and your words are not worth shit...

So which erotic narcotic are you? I'd like to introduce myself to your face sometime. I'll bring manamana.

// :D

#68. Refrain from using keyboard smilies when communicating via the Internet. Single acceptable smiley: -(

//Personally I would LOVE to see erotic narcotic take on manamana

Personally, I'd love to see manamana on grim.

// Dont say on the internet what you wouldn't say to my face,
// otherwise you are just a faggot bich hiding behind a computer
// screen and your words are not worth shit...

So, conversely, you stand by your online word, and, given the chance, would genuinely assault manamana for some online sleight?

// Devil Rider, I really didnt want to say this, but your mum is really a man...

Why attack someone defending their band-mate by then going on to attack his mother? Why make yourself look like a complete arsehole?
