bottom three genres

when people ask me what my worst genres are, the first three that come to mind are

hip hop
metal
new zealand music (haha)

what are yours?

Forums: NZ Music,

nz music isn't a genre *rolls eyes*

i was taking the piss *rolls eyes*

haha, sorry

The irony is that Christian music is undoubtedly the worst music genre - lyrically locked into a very small pool of themes which have already been done to death (badly) by thousands of existing christian music groups and musically relying on cliches from other genre.

Thought this was interesting, from Sufjan Stevens.. Not sure if you've heard his music, probably more up Soldierboy's alley than yours, not having met either of you...

I know what you're saying about the stereotypes and the prejudices against certain kinds of Christian music. And the criticism is often just against the aesthetic, the artistry, the lack of substance in a lot of Christian pop music. That's really easy to deconstruct. Why is black gospel music accepted and enjoyed by people of all religions? I don't know. There might be a little bit of racism inherent in that. I don't know-- you'd have to be a cultural theorist. But I do have to reckon with the material I'm singing about. And I want to be responsible for what I'm singing about. But I can't be responsible for an entire culture, or an entire church. I can't be responsible for Christendom, and all of its messes and all of its destruction and all of its mistakes. That's not my burden to bear.

I think that when people react reflexively to material that is religious, they're reacting to the culture of religion. And I think an enlightened person is capable, on some level, of making the distinction between the institution of the culture and the culture itself. The institution of Christianity, the way that it's set up, it's institutionalized and comodified, and anytime that happens, anytime it's incorporated, it leads to disaster. I'm on the same page as everyone. I have the same knee-jerk reaction to that kind of culture. Maybe I'm a little more empathetic to it because we have similar fundamental beliefs. But culturally and aesthetically, some of it is really embarrassing.

That's a nice quote Jet. I think why I don't like overly Christian music (including gospel) is blandrock aspects aside, there is nothing I can identify with in it.

omigod. The southpark episode where cartman starts a christian rock band. soooo funny. and also the rap on metallica et al. 'Because of people downloading his music, Lars can't afford a new goldplated fishtank/bar (or something) and will have to save for a couple of weeks before he can buy it'. Mint.

In the same way "NZ Music" is not a genre, neither is "Christian Music".

10 Years ago Christian hiphop was thrashing the SHIT out of most other hiphop around - but it was so underground most people would never have heard it...

And there's a lot of underground 'christian music' that is just as inventive and creative as anything else around...

Unfortunately most music identified as christian is either "God is choice", or "I love my wife". There's not much christian music that questions death or beliefs or whatever and then gets played on LifeFM, for example.

That South Park episode completely sums up the commercial Christian music industry.

My bottom three genres for anyone who cares is:
Hip hop
Rap
And White Hip Hop and rap(is that rasict?, please tell if is)

STP tryan oprez me & MC TITTYCLAK coz our white rap is WHack krakka !!@!@!

Oh geez. You can't say that you hate all hip hop, or all rap, or even "white hip hop". You just can't.
It goes against any music loving ethos to say you hate a whole 'genre' no matter what that is. Within any genre or otherwise limiting category there is a huge amount of diversity. If you're talking about your 'bottom three' chances are you've never bothered to listen to anything beyond what's on the surface of said genre (which, as anyone who's passionate about any kind of music knows, is mostly crap). Or if you have, surely you can appreciate - objectively - some of the musicianship, some of the performances and even the politics even if the music itself isn't your cup of tea?
I was thinking today actually that if I hadn't of been forced by a friend to re-think my aversion to 'country' music as an entire genre, I wouldn't have experienced and appreciated the songwriting glory that is Johnny Cash.

But in saying that, there are some true bastardisations of 'genres' like that straight from Satan sound of techno-hoedown that came from Cotton Eye Joe in the late 90s. *shudders*

you're right, for example i like some of the lyrics by Bone Thugs n' Harmony, i was just generalising just 'cos it's my least favourite genre doesn't mean i hate all of it

now that you mention it, i really dislike country too : P

you dumbass hater. at least learn to practise your religion adequately before posting again.

country is awesome jebussnax, its all about god fearing drug gobblers who can't stop themselves from a sinin'

Worst genres:

1)Rap/hiphop/r&b
2)pop rock/punk

Funny how he calls me gay as a insalt, meh.........

Guys, I'm sensing a lot of negativity here. Now both of you, stop, take a deep breath and count to 10.

You may now return to your hunched-over position posting in rage.

Best three:

Metal
Funk
Acid Jazz

Worst three:

Christian (spose you gotta promote the cult somehoe ^_^)
Hip-Hop/Rap - (New school that is, I don't mind old school "Public Enemy" ^_^)
Bubblegum pop

I just can't stand;

Texas Step
Post-Bluegrass
Atheist Rock

The Worst three for me would be Country and Western, Metal, and Christian. The best three are jazz (acid and all - I do like a bit of Nathan Haines, or Mark Clive de Lowe), 70's epic rock and disco.

How can you even make rash statements like that! As a musician do you not every now and again hear a song from a genre you usually wouldn't listen to and really appreciate it?

I agree totally - I used to dismiss country as something I'd never get into... then I had some friends point out to me some good country and I was off and running... next thing I knew I was in a 7 piece country band (which lasted about 6 months but was super fun)!!!

Theres even a few hiphop/rnb tracks that I like now - I trust a number of my friends (who know my tastes) to point me in the direction of tracks which I wouldn't usually listen too - far easier than trawling through years of output in a genre. My next project is to understand Funk and to manage to sucessfully cross breed it with Country :-)

It pays to not ever dimiss anything totally I find. Especially if you can appreciate how much hard work goes into making music!

Scott, check out Sly & The Family Stone's 'Spaced Cowboy'. Should give you good pointers for a country / funk cross over... or maybe not what to do. Fuck, it's hairy... but sort of exciting given funk isn't really known for the slacker aesthetic.

I'm sure you know which member of that country band you could ask for funk pointers... or I could recommend some funky Pointer Sisters. :D

Also check out the track "Biological Speculation" by Funkadelic -it's on the singles comp "music for your mother". It's a funk/country track, basically a straight country song right down to the pedal steel with extra notes in the bassline.

p.s. a good first funk record is "standing on the verge of getting it on" by funkadelic.

//Scott, check out Sly & The Family Stone's 'Spaced Cowboy'. Should give you good pointers for a country / funk cross over...

Yeah man Sly is high up on my listening list at the moment. The funk/country project is mostly going to be a recording excursion between myself and Pearce (hence the Funk and Country :-). I like the challenge of trying to meld the best bits of two genres - and there is a bit of cross over between them already (for example the gospel elements in both Country and Funk).

I have the sinlges compilation sitting on my stereo at home at the moment! The friend I'm working with has an extensive library of both Funk and Country (which makes it easier) - but it's good to know which tracks to look at specifically! Cheers!

Dr John and JJ Cale in habit a world of groovy shit that may called 'americano' or Cajun soul or whatever. BLOODY GOOD THOUGH! Its worth checking Beefheart for the sort of twisted breaks that can really pump under country/blues tunes. Its all from the same family- Spirituals-hymns-gopel-blues-bluesgrass-r'n'b-rock'n'roll-soul-country-funk- its just an ongoing progression wrought through the various combos of black and white music in towns like Memphis and Nashville and New Orleans.

Isn't it strange that the most amazing touching spiritually tuned in music has come out of a geography and social climate of racism and hatred.

Sorry, referring to original statement.

It still made sense - even if read with my previous post!

haha yeah we posted at exactly the same time. I hadn't seen your post when I put up this one so just ignore it

Damn, I want to be like a politician and not have to clarify ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!

I am taking the Seventh!
