criminal convictions and international travel

are musicians still allowed to tour the world and stuff after they get convicted of stuff like possession? or is that just big rockstars?

i have this big dilema at the moment 'cos i got a restraining order that i'm not supposed to break, the one that prevents me from becoming a lawyer after i get my law degree

Comments

Dude, you're the lawyer... shouldn't you already know where to find out this stuff?

Also..a burning question - are you saying you've got a criminal offence as well as your restraining order, or what?

I think the more burning question is who is the restraining order from and why?

i took the law of contract and intellectual property... i have yet to take "the law of international travel after you have a criminal conviction"

i have a restraining order (to prevent me from gatecrashing a wedding) and trespass order (for distributing copies of the Satanic Bible to a uni Christian group), both of which are not criminal offences unless i break them

i'm just curious as to what that box means where you have to tick when you're on a plane, and whether if you tick yes you won't be allowed to travel, say, to AU

(because i don't intend to be famous only in NZ, which pretty much means nothing when crap like Brooke Fraser and Dave Dobbyn gets in the top ten)

Weelllll, that answered that question, Heather, eh? I guess that someone knows someone who's getting married and isn't too happy about it, and is so not happy about it that orders have been placed. Hmm. Now, there's a tale begging to be told.

//i took the law of contract and intellectual property... i have yet to take "the law of international travel after you have a criminal conviction"

sure, I understand that, but with zero legal background at all, and two minutes on the internet, I established that there is very little in common between a restraining order and a drug offence, and (wrt criminal offences at least) it depends entirely on the country you want to go to - so the best option would probably be to just call the high commissions or the embassies of the countries to which you want to go. I doubt you'd have any trouble getting into most countries, although the US is notorious for getting snippy about the most minor convictions.

Just you've posted quite a few topics asking for random information, and although it's fair enough that nzm is great for getting a massive range of opinions and advice, I've gotten the strong impression you post here first because you're just too lazy to do the leg work (or open the yellow pages, or google) to find out about, say, churches in the area, or the vast multitudes of peer-to-peer networks, or website hosting information, or whatever. For a university student - someone I'd expect to have at least passable research skills, not to mention your healthy helping of right-wing self-sufficience - it surprises me that you seem to either angle for an info handout, or just pass it off as too hard.

& WRT the satanic bible, what was that all about? Why were you giving out those?

lol, yeah i'm too lazy : P there's too much information on the internet i can' tbe bothered clicking on all the search results when i look up "web hosting" on google...

man, real life is never like the movies

wrt the Satanic Bible, long story cut short some Christians like to have sex before marriage and come up with justifications for it, which i thought were pretty similar to the justifications given in the Satanic Bible, but apparently stuff like that has to be censored 'cos in order to run a perfect uni Christian group you can't allow people to make others think for themselves

Well, for all the reasons for a christian to pass around copies of the satanic bible, I reckon that's a pretty decent one, although that trash is better left unread - not because it's evil or subversive, but because it's just a giant wankfest, and excruciatingly bad writing to boot. Anton laVey was probably the second most arrogant tosser ever.

Anyway, trespass order is certainly overkill, but going by some of those multitudes of google results they're two-a-penny, it's real easy to slap one on just about anyone for any flaky reason. I've heard similar about restraining orders, although they seem a teeny bit more serious. Anyway, upshot is they shouldn't pose you any problems travelling, but it'd still pay to talk to an official just as a double-check.

BTW,

//clicking on all the search results when i look up "web hosting" on google...

you don't need to look at all of them, just three or four promising-looking ones from the first page of a nz-only search. OR you can visit websites that you like, or are similar to what you're trying to achieve, and click through to their web hosts (most have a link) to see what they're paying. Then if you posted on nzm "x sounds like a good deal" you'd get a few more geeky types saying "hell, yes!" or "nah, my host offers this".

...the second most arrogant tosser ever.

Now there's a nice big juicy bit of bait if ever there was one. I'll bite: Who's the most arrogant tosser ever?

And JC: are you sure this is the place to be making admissions like that? Internet anonymity notwithstanding, you never know what's going to turn around and bite you on the bum in the future.

//Now there's a nice big juicy bit of bait if ever there was one. I'll bite: Who's the most arrogant tosser ever?

Heh. The Big Brute, Aleister Crowley. Obviously. :)

...seriously, it's something that fascinates me about hard core satanists. The harder-core the satanist, the bigger the pretentious prick.

//to prevent me from gatecrashing a wedding)

Busted were glad they crashed the wedding...

Some people go to rather large extremes to make people forever hold their peace.

//right-wing self-sufficience - it surprises me that you seem to either angle for an info handout, or just pass it off as too hard.

I think right-wing rhetoric about the virtues of hardwork is very disingenuous. Successful capitalism is really about finding hidden value that others have overlooked, rather than working hard. Here, JCs hidden value is that he needs to do less work because we'll do it for him. And the ultimate badge of capitalist success is passive income derived from your accumulation of capital. And then the right-wingers are all down on dole-bludgers, whereas those actually abusing the welfare system are more like capitalists with smaller dreams!

//And the ultimate badge of capitalist success is passive income derived from your accumulation of capital.

Brilliant work, you've managed to vocalise perfectly the niggle I've had in my head for months.

//Aleister Crowley. Obviously. :)
I've not read him... but I have some opinions from some very intelligent and well respected that say he was onto something good... and he broke down a lot of barriers...

LeVay did seem to be a complete dick though...

I think Crowley started off ok, he had some pretty respectable associates, and on the surface a lot of what he says makes some sense, but you have to be pretty careful with anything to do with Hermetics or the Golden Dawn in particular. The purest intent is to speed up spiritual maturity and learn greater truth, but Crowley twists it into an appropriation of power.

He was the original "do what you will" guy. The way he argues that phrase actually resembles the goals of the right-hand-path religions (eastern and western), but he underpinned his teachings with an attitude of rebellion against christianity in particular, and with the triumph of individuality over communion. Granted I don't pledge to christianity any more, but such overt antagonism bugs me, and I also think individualism is a serious error.

Many religious types I speak to are smug in one way or another, but there's a very distinctive arrogance - sort of like crowing about how much smarter they are than everyone else - associated with Crowley and his followers that seriously offends me. Same with the discordians, but not so much with other alternative religions like wicca. I've learned to take it as a bad sign.

when i read Crowley he always sounded like he was making up for something. like some huge inferiority complex or something. he really protested too much, that smugness really rang empty and pathetic and hurt. and then there was this whole teenage rebel-against-everything thread through his writings, as though he had some huge problems with his parents and had never got over it. i just really got the whole "uber-damaged goods" flashing neon sign when i read his stuff. everything was based on emotion and logic was nowhere to be seen. but that might have been his best method to appeal to followers ... still, poor bugger.

can nzmusic take out a restraining order?

Amen.

I'm praying for a bozo list function if there's ever a new version.

I find that admiting to having any sort of criminal history, let alone a drug conviction only serves in drawing all manner of unwanted attention and (as was the case with Canada) ultimately leds to being denied entry.
That in mind you do what you think is right.

drawing attention? HAHA Are you kidding me?

If you don't say you have a criminal conviction Customs fuck you over even harder than when you say you have got one and you then become a liar as well as a convicted criminal, and declare it or not you are facing the possibility of being denied entry when they find out.

From what I've heard, discgolfer's got a LOT to hide. ;)

Dan I don't know where you've been or what you've done but speaking from personal experience I lied to get into the States, I've been here on the dodge since my Visa ran out some 8 or 9 yrs ago, I work, I pay taxes and all that good shit (but in my situation that in itself is a crime) during which time I've done a couple things that are illegal, nothing of a dubious or questionable nature, just a bit of biff and a couple dope charges. Now I have crossed into both Mexico several times and Canada 3 I lied to the Canadians and I've been caught and I have also made it through although this last brush with those guys didn't go so well, so I doubt I'll be doing that again anytime soon but my point is this why would I just come out and tell them when I know they aren't going to have any part of it, they have a job to do I say make them do it.

Oh and what are you talking about Heather a couple scraps and felony PCS 1 and 2 and two counts of absconding (for going fishing) I wouldn't call that A LOT!

//why would I just come out and tell them when I know they aren't going to have any part of it, they have a job to do I say make them do it.

It's not their job to find out what you have done in your past. It is their job to process toe passenger, if you have been red flagged by the police or another countires customs personal it WILL show up on their system I know this as I have worked in customs and have seen it happen, Alerts come up on the screen while processing your passport etc.

And if you lie about any charges or whatever if they ask you, you generally get into more trouble than if you had just come clean.

Obviously a couple of fights and some drug charges aren't a priority unless they were hard drugs and/or you got done for dealing or something more serious and/or you had someone keeping an eye on you like customs or the police and they didn't want you leaving the country.

So you are over staying too...You are still in the US? Nice place to overstay...

Someone who know's discgolfer should send him one of the king kapisi "overstayer" t-shirts.

// one of the king kapisi "overstayer" t-shirts.

heh. my brother had one of those that he used to wear all the time while overstaying in the UK.

A mate sent me the one with the Samoan flag "keep da faith" but as I'm half Tongan I gave it to away to a friend of mine, besides if I were to wear "overstayer" anything it would have to rep NZ...like maybe the Chesdale cheese boys?
Is it due to my having a pissy attitude this evening or was that last comment a snarky little dig there Dan?

When I say 'more trouble' I mean they generally just get pissed off with you and treat you like shit because you are lieing to them.
