NZ MUSIC FAMILY TREE

people keep rolling out the comparisons of now and yesterday - NZ musics heritage...
anybody wanna draw me a road map of some of these musical detours?
this could be quite a good read if it were purely dates and times and towns and bands and members who were in this or that then moved on to those and these... encyclopaedia

Forums: NZ Music,

ok - I'll start it off - feel free to name bands that pre-date the bands I put..

oh yeah - and I'm bound to be wrong here and there - so correct me - and go easy for chrissake

anybody else got a list of bands and line-ups they care to share
I think it's interesting how there's these clusters of musos with their fingers lin lots of pies - sometime at the same time - like that dude from jps experience / solid gold hell / ... etc
like who HASN'T been in the chills?

I reckon a big old almanac of who's been where would be a great coffee table mag

the nz rock book is quite good: 1990-95 I think, band lineups from bands during that period (many of whom have gone onto other bands today). I think Slowboat Welly have some copies left, don't know about elsewhere. Used with Stranded in Paradise, which covers the two decades before 1990 (or so), there's a wealth of info on who's played with who and when.

What we need is revised, online, fully cross-referenced version.

yeah - totally

bailterspace

carriage h

oops - this is more a tree of evolving genre - still pretty interesting tho

where d'ya reckon it'll go from here??

maybe dunedinkid's got the answer to that...

whats he up to?? got a bit of noise evolution up his sleeve eh?? i'd be interested to hear what his ideas/thoughts are.

Dolphin (aka Heartland) / Elevation
„¥ Throw
„¥ Cinematic
„¤ Springloader

Cinematic
„¥ Debris
„¤ Fuce

Debris
„¥ Nilstate
„¥ Chicane
„¥ Dark Tower
„¤ Teen Angel ¨ Pash ¨ The Exponents

full circle back to...

Dance Exponents
„¤ Throw (drummer Birss played in the Exponents for a while)

And that's just the start of it really -- it's just too hard to map all this stuff out really, lines everywhere...

ah, and it's called all my lovely special characters...You should have seen it before it got mangled, 'twas a work of art...

ah, and it's killed all my lovely special characters...You should have seen it before it got mangled, 'twas a work of art...

noizy - i can't believe in yr clean family tree you forgot the heavy eights & david kilgour!
jeeze wayne ....

that's your cue to fill in the blanks oh my brother

and bailterspace, and cloth don't forget myrtle.

um pop art toasters, and does yo la tengo count?

sorry j, but i cant think of how bailter space comes from the clean. enlighten me?
pop art toasters - good call - if you follow that yo la tengo vein though it gets too involved (lambchop, superchunk, pavement, show off ...)
you could go around too - melita who played in the first heavy eights also played in the chills ...
which comes back to the question of who didnt play in the chills. you, stink buzz.

bugger - hamish kilgour played drums in the first incarnation of bailter space. duh.
also, we forgot stephen (hamish, alf danielson & stephen kilroy)

the fact that martin phillipps played keyboards on those early clean recordings opens up a whole bunch of crazed cross-references I suppose.

ahh - excuse me - would everyone just be patient ......

bert, feel free to delete my family tree and related posts up there -- I hate messing up your site.

i've been watching this one for a while, waiting for it to get off the ground ... it could be a whole site in it's self. melody maker (?) used to print huge family trees - the turned a dozen of them into tv docos ... which is what some of these could become (when bands break up vol. 1 perhaps?)

anyway, how about jps experience?
DAVE MULCAHY > superette > dave mulcahy solo
(and superette spawned ben & greta and then fang & arch hill recordings ..)
DAVE YETTON > the stereo bus
(also in the stereo bus david hunt, currently in dirt, formerly in fang - see above - pumpkinhead and supertanker ... which leads back to noizy's elevation)
JIM LAING > lanky ( released on arch hill - above - with noel ward from the heavy eights, kilgour's band which leads back to the clean)
GARY SULLIVAN > solid gold hell > the stereo bus (played on album #1) > dimmer
and RUSSELL BAILLIE, well, i dont think he was allowed to play in bands anymore after that prancing about in the jpse "precious" video. he did play in the first line up of the able tasmans though - the colouring pencils, i think - straight out of whangarei.

wow - someone shoudl draw u pa big map like an a2-sized poster with names / mugshots - it could look a bit like one of those photo-mosaics
anybody got a photomosaic plug-in for photoshop?

whoops. not melody maker. pete frame at nme used to do the family trees ... maybe he still does ...

loves ugly children
subliminals

> now these dudes are bound to have pre-cursors and lateral branches

loves ugly ... you'd know this better noizy ...
SIMON MACLAREN - luc > subs > now in dirt
FLOSS - luc > teen rocket, with chris matthews from the headless chickens ... whoops, there goes a strand in itself ...
JASON YOUNG - luc > excellent soul therapy > future stupid ... now a full time tech for stellar, tim finn, betchadupa ... did jason play in salmonella dub for a while?

subliminals ...
BRENDAN MORAN > hasselhoff experiment, jawload, cattle + more
STEVE REAY > trawler (or was it creely?)
JARRED JOHANSON > bressa creeting cake and some metal & hardcore bands ... i dont know the names ....

yeah, it was trawler.

speaking of creely though:

sneaky feelings
creely
range
blair parkes
wadd
103
the letter 5 (I think?)

...and that's just off the top of my head. bert? you can probably add to this one?

and of course, Jason's replacement on the drum stool was a certain Paul Reid, who went on to form Rubicon.

There was a pre-LUC band whose name eludes me at the moment.
