A few nights ago I went to a Constantines show in Vancouver (they're from Toronto). They were really good, so good that I bought two of their CDs. Unfortunately I haven't listened to them yet so I can't tell you how their sound translates when recorded, but the live show was epic in a really understated way. Very well thought out music, intricate and passionate, and the bassist was a champion, although he occasionally got uncomfortably close to that whole spastic, pseudo-indie-but-really-just-Fall Out Boy-mainstream-fling-the-bass-around-your-neck schtick.
I'm not sure if anyone here has heard them already, but worth checking out if they ever hit NZ. From what I saw of the opening band, the Crystal Skulls, they were more mellow but also fairly good.
god speed.

Richard's on Richards or the Commodore?
Saw them with the Weakerthans last year. Pretty sweet.
All the good Canadian bands come from Toronto, and a few from Montreal.
The local Vancouver scene sucks, eh?

Some OK MCs from there, though. Actually Swollen Members are most famous, but I hate them... I reckon Moka Only turns out some great tracks.

Actually I saw them at the campus pub The Pit, which surprised me because The Pit is usually a sleazy sausage-fest meat-market. Good stuff the Pit. Are those clubs you mentioned good Viet? Don't spose you know which part of the city they're in?
Can't say I can tell how good the local scene is yet, but if there is indeed good MCs then I'm keen to see some - jet do you know which clubs to go to?
p.s i've started salsa. i rule and my hips are so jiggly now.

Dunno about clubs sorry, Jimi. I guess I'd approach it by googling the acts I like..?
Richard's on Richards is on Richards ...
Richard's on Richards is on Richards Street funnily enough. It's a superb venue. I saw the Secret Machines, Constantines, Weakerthans, Low, Pedro the Lion, Shivaree, Clem Snide and a few others there. For some reason I passed on seeing Sufjan play there. Dumb.
Great vibe, great sound.
The Commodore is on Granville Street just past Robson. It's nice. It's much bigger - saw a bunch of bands there too.
Gigs ar the Red Room are fun too. Saw Death From Above there. Reminded me a lot of Indigo. Wicked fun.
Got a job? I found it pretty tough going in that regard. But I do miss the 'couv.

Really, stefan? REALLY????
Love in Fear... Lizavetta... Soon Enough... Windy Road?!?! That album has honestly been playing non-stop on the ipod for days. Interesting though, I haven't really been able to get into Shine A Light, possibly due to my Tournament fixation.
Once you see Draw Us Lines live you will be completely sold.

Well I have had more time with Shine A Light so am more used to those songs than Tournament of Hearts. Yes, Draw Us Lines and Love in Fear are great songs. I am quite partial to Working Full Time as well.

Yeah, yeah rub it in. What are the chances of that, eh?

After a few beers I told them to tour NZ. They smiled and nodded. So who knows? haha.
