Big Day Out Roll Call 2006!

Forums: The Bar,

Errr.. first of all whoops! didnt mean to press enter (note the lack of letters in my above post)

Ok so who will be attending this year glorious (sp?) day?

Of course I will be there for my 6th consecutive big day out! and I just say Im really looking forward to this one!! my only problem so far is Mars Volta or Iggy & The Stooges.

So far I have planned to see, 2 many dj's, Soulwax, The Living End, Shapeshifter, Iggy & The Stooges or MV and I will be able to see about 30mins of the white stripes before I rush to 2 many dj's. Apart form that its random picks.

Will hopefully be wearing a 2 many dj's t-shirt

Hope you all have an awesome day!

PS. If this is the wrong forum for this please accept my apologies, this was pretty much the only part of the forum I visited when I used to post regularly (back when I was a munt)

PPS. Hello everyone! howve you been? not sure if anyone remembers me or not.

(Heh, forgot there is no edit post button here)

that is not
a difficult
problem
to solve

Well pretty much got my day sussed.

Depending on the train time table and how early I wake up, I may arrive in time to check out Deja Voodoo. But we'll see what happens, gotta make sure I east something in the morning.

After that its whatever until The Living End. After losing a decent amount of energy in the mosh pit its free time again until 5 o clock. I will be hot and sweaty so a beer will sound very tempting at this point. So I will answer natures call and head over to the garden bar for a beer or 2.

5 o clock, SOULWAX! one of the reasons why I am amped for this bdo!

the night proceeds to bring on Shapeshifter, followed by Iggy & The Stooges. After that I will catch a glimpse of the White Stripes before I head over to end the night on a high at 2 many dj's.

Getting all worked up as I write this! Cant wait!

Once again, have a wicked day!

there is also another dilemma in the world of y.

Mylo cancelled his set in the boiler room, which was a little gutting. he was going from 9.00-10.00. SO with him cancelling it gave me a decent 25-30 mins watching white stripes from the stands before heading over to 2 many dj's. But they found a replacement for Mylo. Which was expected, but it just so happens that replacement is Concord Dawn!

Which is annoying as I am rather fond of Concord Dawn, but it might be a good thing now I think about it, cause appearently they played for a while longer than they were supposed to last year.

I'm going! I will be at whomever Lucy_Fur tells me I need to go and see. Or rather, I want to see Pluto, Shihad, Sleater Kinney, the Go Team and the White Stripes. I haven't checked out the schedule for myself yet though.

See Mars Volta. They will rule. Although I beleieve they've not got the same drummer as last time but still...

//not got the same drummer

Goddamnit! That guy was f**ken ACE! The whole band watcyhed him for such a huge proportion of the time for their queues and to find the rhythm... I watched him a lot more than the Afro-laden performers trying to distract me from the amazing band.

The Afro-laden folk are also very good, BTW.

They absolutely have the same drummer, Jon Theodore, who ought to be just as mesmerising this time round. Someone's been speaking lies to ya!

Some random indie bassist told me. I hope your right - that will be great for you (and not me cos I wont be there).

well I was about to recommend soulwax but they clash with The Go! Team. Yes yes I know, it is very annoying. But on a good note, if Im in the mood for running at the time I will be able to check out 10 minutes of The Go! Team before I rush to Soulwax, but for reason I doubt that...

//Some random indie bassist told me
Well there's your mistake...

Bloody Indie Bass players.

Rock and post-rock bass players, however, are utterly reliable.

The indie bass player must have drummers on his head. The Mars Volta have a new bass player, Paul Hinojos from Sparta and At the Drive-in.

Paul Hinojos played bass for Sparta, but he does sound manipulation for The Mars Volta.
Juan Alderte De La Pena is the bassist. They have the same lineup as 2004 in that they haven't lost anyone, but they have picked up 3 members, so there'll be eight guys on stage.

I'm at Sleater-Kinney on Thursday night, then Big Day Out Friday.

I've got a problem... at 1:30 - I want to be in 3 places at once... Jean Grae on Green... Gestalt Switch on Local... Coco Solid on Lilyworld.

Then maybe some End Of Fashion (have heard the name, but don't know who the hell are they are - guess I'll find out,) some more Sleater-Kinney, Magic Numbers, The Bats,

Then my next problem... The Go! Team AND The Kings Of Leon AND The Brunettes AND Die!Die!Die! all overlapping... a hardout couple of hours, I reckon.

Then Henry Rollins, Wolfmother (early Pink Floyd reborn - has anyone noticed how much like "Live In Pompeii" their music video is?)... depending on how good Wolfmother is... I'll go have a look at Franz Ferdinand... and depending on how much I enjoy the main stage vibe (normally not very much at all,) I'll either check out the start of Iggy Pop... or go and lose myself in the looong The Mars Volta set (Woo Hoo!)

Then Common crossing over with 2 Many Djs (who I've never heard - but you NZM people seem to rate them highly... so I may give 'em a go,) and of course Fat Freddy's drop to bring me down at the end.

Should be a great day... I'll be wearing my straw cowboy hat (with a blue stripe) to protect my precious scalp and to hide my eyes from security... feel free to attempt contact if you spot me... you may need to talk slow, though.

I like the sound of your day. Can I live vicariously through your BDO? Being NiceGuy styles

I'll strap a tape recorder to my chest and record the lot, Gonzo style.

i've got a 15kg two-track if you want to borrow it...

ha i don't even have to HIDE my recording device- got a letter saying i'm ALLowed one.

How'd you manage that, Kirk?

I media. what a funny word when you look at it out of context..

I worked out that much myself, Kirk... which Media? Is it a radioactive thing?

//Although I beleieve they've not got the same drummer as last time but still... //

Oh godamm were did you hear that??

active don't have any money with which to pay.. no.

<<>

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was thinking that, tho the beastie boys did it better, in Rotorua no less (tho I cannot remember which song, it was on the 2 dvd collection they put out a few years back)

Gerling (maybe sola rosa)
pluto
mikey dread
shihad (no thanks Henry)
rhombus
MV
common
ffD

will be floating under a big green hat... hombre' stylez.

i'm going

The Stooges will be there too. Ace!

it's a party!

so who's setting up the NZM picnic blanket with half time oranges?

I'll join in, with my custom NZM t-shirt and all!

NZM lunch time with Coco Solid - 1:30pmish at lilyworld... right next to the Krishna food place (fingers crossed it is there again)

Can't guarantee I'll be there... but I will pass by that food stand at least once.

It would be cool to organise a meeting place for NZMers...

Well, I have to do a write-up for Craccum, so I'll need to manage my time properly. The White Stripes will definitely be a highlight - they're the reason I bought a BDO ticket in the first place. Iggy and the Stooges should also be good - Mars Volta, Breaks Co-op, Franz Ferdinand, Shihad, Sleater Kinney...

Hmm... what to do over the Iggy-Volta conundrum? I'll probably be up all Thursday night trying to decide.

I can't remember the order of any of these but I'm pretty sure they don't overlap TOO much, and where they do I'll have to suss out the surroundings on the day...

i wanna see Pluto (my official BDO opener.. this'll be the 3rd year running for them), the Go! Team, Mars Volta (more than Iggy but I also wanna see), The White Stripes, Sleater-Kinney, Franz Ferdinand, The Magic Numbers, Shihad (for old times sake though... meh), Kings of Leon, I might pop in to see DJ James Murphy, and maybe the Living End, though meh to that too.

I need to sort out my timetable properly.

So far, I'll go for Edan over Jean Grae or might try and jump between the two. Soulwax over the Go! Team (someone tell me how they are though). Gonna have to go with the Mars Volta over Iggy. umm, fit in some Common, Sleater-Kinney, Magic Numbers (their performance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien was fantastic).

jean grae isn't playing BDO anymore. Got a press release from Splore today, and she's doing that INSTEAD. (with Talib Qweli). they didn't make THAT one public... guess it'd just be more bad publicity than its worth...

Damn that Splore thing (for some reason it makes me think hippyfest, ugh) would be good to go to, oh well, makes my BDO choices easier.

yeah MAYbe a hippyfest, but ya know what, a lot of people have cut off their dreads and started to use deodorant lately.. and the lineup is looking great.

DUDES! it's Iggy Pop, guys! IGGY POP!!!! mars volta are always around but iggy's like ONCE IN A LIFETIME! Seriously, the guy's worth seeing just to see what a fucking madman he is!

YOU'RE Iggy Pop.

heh

burn.

I had a dream last night that I met Iggy Pop. I was standing in a queue for something and I turned around and he was right behind me. We chatted briefly, some girl came over for an autograph, he signed her piece of paper, then gave me a hug and headed off. I was left thinking that for someone that ravaged, he was surprisingly buff.

Tough call between the two.

Actually it wasn't tough at all, because I like The Mars Volta a lot more than the Stooges. It would just have been nice if they didn't have to be at the exact same time.

Also, the Stooges are more than 30 years past their prime. (Not that I'm averse to watching aging rockers, but when there's a clash...)

unbe
lievable

Yeah i would go but... I have noone to go with.. Yup, Im a loner in my own lunch hour.. Im cool.. Atleast my mom thinks so... Love ya all.. Btw.. Im back!

Yeah I'm going (really shouldn't be), I think I'll be wearing a red Queens Of The Stone Age t-shirt, if you wanna say hi.......

This will be probally my day plan, it might change

JD Comp Band - Odessa
Gramsci
Deja Voodoo
Gerling
Pluto - Gestalt Switch, probally only watch a little of Pluto
The Living End
Sleater-Kinney
Autozamm
The Bats
The Sneaks
Die! Die! Die!
Shihad - Henry Rollins, not sure anout this, seen Shihad heaps of times before, but Henry sounds very interesting
Franz Ferdinand, not a big fan, but I'll check them out anyway.
Stooges - Mars Volta, another one I'm not sure about, Mars Volta is the main reason I'm coming up, but the Stooges is a very rare moment....... I might watch about 10-20mins of Stooges then Mars Volta.
The White Stripes, not a big fan, but I'll check them out anyway.
Fat Freddys Drop

Stooges go till 9.15

Mars Volta go till 10.00. So you could see a good 40mins of the stooges and catch the last hour of Mars Volta .. ?

(of course that is according to the time table.. who knows what will happen)

i'm going! my day looks like it's going to be quite similar to niceguyeddie's.
where's the nzm meet up?

//where's the nzm meet up?

My thoughts exactly. We don't have much time, guys...
