hey does anyone know what you gotta do to record a demo? do you just call up a recording studio and arrange a time to go in, and they'll have people there to help you record stuff? is there anything specific you need to know or is it enough that you just got the songs ready? i'm a singer and acoustic guitarist by the way

Short answer is if you don't know this stuff, you probably shouldn't be going into a studio for $50 - $150 an hour. You'd be much better off spending your money on home recording gear and whacking songs down on your PC. Once you've got home recorded stuff you are really happy with (song wise, not production wise) then and only then it might be worthwhile to take the next step and shell out big time for a studio.

with you on that Rhino, you have to get used to how you sound on a recording, take time to find out where your going wrong and how you can fix things, a recorded sound is just that a recorded sound, if you go into a studio and spend a heap of money and come out and listen to your recordings and find out your not sounding as you thought you would, you'd have in someways wasted your money just to find out you need to do more work on your music. If you do a basic home recording and get used to the process of laying down the vocals / guitar etc and find the basic faults first ie in vocal / guitar "sounds" and find out how they sound in a recorded state it may pay off, you also have the time to and learn alittle about the recording process with out the time constraints of a recordeding studio, then when you do fork out the cash, it's with a sence of what you want and how you want things to sound and you can be better focused on what you want the end product to sound like... 'll have to re read that sometime to see if it make sence .. I need a coffee right now so can't be bothered to go back over it ..

I'd recommend the Garageband recording software which is dead easy to use and comes with pre-installed royalty-free samples.
You get it free when you buy a mac, which start at around $900 if you have a keyboard, mouse and screen already.

Man! I remember some disasters from back when our band recorded some demos all those years ago. We just had no idea. I was really puzzled as to why we'd shelled over all those bucks to the guy and we still didn't sound like the bands we liked (nostalgic laugh).
Only when I'd had enough of bands and just started playing my songs by myself in my bedroom for my own pleasure did things start to go right. That was because I had time to play my songs again and again until they were absolutely right; I knew that when I got into a studio (home-recording gear was still prohibitively expensive back then) I was going to be able to play each part OK so I could spend more time asking the guy to get me a certain sound. Then things really got better when, as is mentioned above, home recording gear became a realistic option. Then I could just keep re-doing it and re-doing it and re-doing it again until I was satisfied without shelling out the spondulicks for all that time spent twiddling and not strumming.

yeah mate, pretty much the same as I was saying, pays to get the kinks ironed out as best you can before going into a studio and shelling out all that money to someone else, if you can get a basic home recording kit and get things down, listen to them and maybe pick out where your going wrong .. it's like hearing a recording of your own voice for the first time .. most people don't like it because it's not the way they sound in their own head .. if that makes sense ...

It does. I'm the best damn musician in the world when I play my songs in my mind! But every time I hear a recording of myself, I vow to keep my day job.

Yet again it depends. If you just want to record your vocals and a gat, i say do it, it's cheap. But if you want other instruments (Drums, keyboard, etc) and you can't play them, or don't know anyone who'll be able to help you out, Don't it will be VERY expensive, because then you have to pay Session Musos $100 an hour, plus royalties.

cheers for answers, i was just wondering whether i'd have to hire like a sound engineer or something or do i just pay for the recording studio and they'll have a sound engineer there

sound engineer'll come part of the deal. Expect about $700 a day upwards though. And yeah depending on what your doing and the quality your hoping to get it can take a couple of days to get a song down.

Again with the church motif - serious, a big church with a good bunch of musos is a really great place to start because they'll all know someone that knows someone that'll get you mates' rates at a reasonable studio and they'll be falling over themselves to help you out with production as well. Take the plunge! Just lurk around the musical equipment after a church service, put on a lost puppy look, offer them a hand packing up, watch the magic unfold!

There was a guy I recorded some acoustic stuff with in Akld out West way back last year, I think his name was Russell Storey. He was listed in the NZ Musician mag. Not sure whether he still does recordings. He charged $20/hr, had mics etc., used ProTools and basically sat there and listened to you record and put it down on a CD after you were relatively happy with your songs.
