Genre stereotypes

Do we fit into them and have we become narrow minded? How willing do you think we are to look outside of the genre that corresponds with our image? (or mental image of what we should like)

Forums: NZ Music,

"... you do it to yourself, you do... just you and no one else..."

Purely just wondering what other people think of it. I don't actually put myself in any particular group. I don't dress a certain way, I just dress. I'm wondering though if people who call themselves apart of a particular group venture out of it or not. Purely out of interest wondering if people stick to a genre or if thats just an idea that isn't real.

Fit into them - Sometimes
Narrow minded - Yes

I don't fit into mine at all. There's a huge amount of wank, seemingly more recently, with anything resembling rock'nroll, requiring rock boots (bought in Melbourne when your band toured there, well played a couple of pub gigs that a couple kiwis went to), vintage t-shirts (stripey if possible, reference to America gets two thumbs up), tight black jeans and of course the obligatory "I'm in a band" haircut, purchased from Toni and Guy for $80. A couple of tattoos you'll regret in about three years thrown in for good measure if you're really cool.

Haha so true!

I used to be really concerned about that stuff when I was a teenager, like anything that didn't fit inot my narrow 'grunge/alternative' *cringe* world I would totally shun and deride, without even knowing what it was really all about. But as I get older I care less and less - I can like whatever music I like and fuck it to how that fits into image/genre. Good music is good music, shit music is shit, and that's all there is to it.

The interpretation of shit music is so different for everyone though, something I think is shit everyone else might like...I mean look at the pop industry...Crazy Frog? What the fuck is that all about? So many people are buying it but to me its blatant shit....guess thats how it goes though. BUT then again...I must admit I do like the odd chart song that I would otherwise class as shit if it didn't force me to dance in that chemical way that it does!!

Guess that makes me a real 'one of those people' for even thinking about whether or not its a chart song before I like it or don't like it....just read over my last post and thought HANG ON A MINUTE, I do it too!

psst... try 'reply to post', it's handy :)

Thanks!!!

Sadly yeah I probably resemble certain steryotypes. The wearing black thing. I have dozens of black t shirts but it looks like I'm always wearing the same thing in photos. The Malmsteen sense of humour... I try not to but I have been known to throw a few malmsteenisms beyond my playing....
80's hair. I could fill in for Maskara if ever needed, wardrobe and everything not a problem.

Taste in music, not so much but thats got a lot to do with evolving as a player. Even if my gut reaction is that I hate something I'll try to take a craftsmans perspective and see if I can gleam any ideas from it. Sometimes over time you start finding stuff growing on ya, a lot of the time I still don't like it but at least am in a position to understand it.
Other side to that I pulled out a bunch of cassettes a while back, stuff I'd collected in bargain bins and loved as a kid. Krokus' change of address, WASP's the last command, Circus of Power, a whole bunch of stuff, I found I wasn't overenthused with a lot of it... it wasn't where I'd want to be as a muso.
I am proudly completely and completely not a steryotype.

and prone to understatement about my faculty on my chosen instrument.

Hey simon what do you think of Lindsey Buckingham from a technical perspective? Especially if you've hear 'Big Love' solo, live, acoustic version.

Thanks Mr Foal, just spotted the email, will respond asap.

Hi Jimi, Lindsay Buckingham strikes me as one of the greats. As a fingerstylist he is fantastic. Haven't ever really got down to the nth degree on any of his stuff but he strikes me superficially as one of those guys, like Scotty Moore, who do a hell of a lot with just thumb , index and middle finger. Could be off on that one but yeah a great and versatile player, not unlike Davey Johnstone (sp? Elton John's guitarist)

i don't think i'm like other Christian musicians 'cos lots of them seem to sing praise and worship type songs, not many detailed personal issue type songs

So you're emo christian? There're quite a few of them. YOU'RE NOT ALONE!

heh, one thing I'm tired of is the whole "Electronic musician as mad scientist" shtick. I mean, that which gets attributed to people by the media and suchlike.

It's a little forward to assume that because someone writes music with a certain type of technology, that there's something wrong with them. I guess it sells records or something.

even worse .. .?

PERSON 1: So What do you do?
PERSON 2: I make electronic music
PERSON 1: So you're a DJ then?

Even worse:

Person 1: I'm a musician
Person 2: Cool, what do you play?
Person 1: I'm a DJ

Seriously.

Haha, I can't believe the number of times I've had someone who knows I write stuff go "gonna do a bit of mixing tonight?" and mime a DJ pose (wikki-wikki with one hand, one ear down to imaginary headphone on shoulders). What the fuck? I can't mix records at all. Such a strange muddle of ideas about how any form of "dance music" (meh) is made.

Hahaha
