Shouldn't gigs start on time?

It's a given in some places that bands don't (won't?) make it to the stage by the advertised time. I recall that NZ was like that. I've been to other places like that. I've also been to (and currently live in) places where bands are ALWAYS punctual. There are avan venues that turn off the stage sound and turn on the house PA at each band's scheduled finishing time, regardless of whether or not they've finished playing.

It was quite surreal walking out of a Lou Reed show to find it was still light (he played two shows that day). I wonder if it's got anything to do with local degree of reliance on public transport.

Anyway, waddaya reckon? Should acts start and finish at the pre-arranged time, or should they be allowed to amble on stage whenever they feel like it?

Forums: The Bar,

I always thought that bands start well after their scheduled start time in NZ so that people turned up early and bought stuff from the bar while they were waiting...

yeah, definitely - everyone clears off somewhere else as soon as the bands finish, so the longer you have to wait beforehand, the more drinks you buy and the more money the bar makes. .

it totally depends on the type of music as well - i'm used to dance parties where the main acts don't start till 3.00 or 4..00 am, so a gig finishing at 1.00 doesn't seem so bad. . . i know in Wellington especially theres an issue that people sit around getting pissed at home or wherever and down't actually show up to shows till 11-12.00, so the bars (and bands) wait for the place to fill up....

//i know in Wellington especially theres an issue that people sit around getting pissed at home or wherever and down't actually show up to shows till 11-12.00, so the bars (and bands) wait for the place to fill up

Yeah, but we're drinking at home cos we know that the band won't be on before 11pm, so it's a chicken/egg thing.

Totally.

I note International bands play pretty early in NZ and we all manage to see them on time.

// i know in Wellington especially theres an issue that people sit around getting pissed at home

yeah but if thats is really an issue, why is it ONLY music that responds like it does? theatre doesn't.

I think bands should start on time (give or take 10mins). I hate how bands expect you to live their lifestyle by starting at 1:30am or something similar.

They should respect their audiences more - in other words as an audience member I have other things I need to do the next day. I've stopped going to see as much live music becuase I happen to have a more balanced life these days.

It also peeves me that I struggle to see live music ona Friday night after work a long arse week, before 11pm. I'm ready for it by about 7 or 8.

I couldn't agree more Dust, the Friday afternoon is always a long hot one, and generally one gets quite refreshed in those few short hours between beer o'clock and the dinner hour. It would be nice to think that one would be able to go straight to the venue, see a good act and still have time to go out for a slap-up meal, catch a movie, pop back to the house for a snifter or two, and still have the capability to get up in the morning and mow the front lawn at 7.30am. Now, that would be a great way to start the weekend, don't you think?
While I'm here (and it's been a while since I've written anything, so I'm quite enjoying this) I should mention that a dream came true last night - Neil Hamburger performed his wild and crazy american comedy at the Kings Arms last night, with entertaining support from the Masters Of Metal, who do a note perfect version of 'Run To The Hills'. That was the funniest show I have ever seen, and I'm not kidding. I would post a joke from the show but I will need to check the forum rules before doing so, as the material was somewhat depraved and very, very entertaining.
Our assembled group prepared for the evening by slugging back a few BBQ sausages and amber fluids, blasting a little Fozzy and Chappelle Show...then off to the pub.
Neil Hamburger is an american comedian who put out a couple of albums on Drag City, which I urge anyone remotely interested to seek out and purchase immediately. I don't know all that much about the man himself, I think it would ruin the wierd enigma if I did. I did glean some information last night - in that he toured with Trans Am through Canada and US in days gone by, and Matt Betchadupa reckons there is also a DVD available of this twisted genius.
Dust, I have no idea if he is playing in Wellington tonight - but if he is you should. This is a 10 out of 10 show review right here buddy. Maybe googling the guy will reveal more than I'm saying here, I'm very hesitant to ruin the experience by listing jokes or enlightening you to the audience reactions, but if you do have the chance you should grasp it with both hands.

Well based on the mutual love of Chappelle that is a good recommendation. My Friday night may well be sussed tonight!~

not sure about mowing the lawns at 7:30 - I'm more the 8 am coffee, eggs, rugby news and little-hotty-Naomi Watts-at-that-table-over-there kinda fellow

Shot bro, etc.

Wait a sec - you're saying you have Naomi Watts sitting at your breakfast table at 8am in the weekends? That's incredible.

re - mowing the front lawn - you may have missed the hidden meaning there..

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. Yes that is a fine start although I am a member of the 420 religion. But then again you've totally confused me?

Naomi is not quite at my table but the one next to me and hell thats enuff for moi.

I just found out that Dave Chappelle had a bit of a break down, and walked out of the third series of the Chappelle Show... now living in Africa, or something.

:(

There might be about 3 episodes of skits completed from series three which might be released (finger crossed.)

Might be about time to watch Half Baked again... could make it a double feature with Biodome.

And late gigs are a pain in the arse... especially during the week. Bring on the Summer festivals!!!

I heard that too NGE, so I looked into it a little (and I mean a little). It seems he got a 50 million advance for series 3 and before doing the series he took a break with friends who live in Africa. He went there because he 'actually quite introverted and I like my own thoughts' or something like that. He could also go anywhere and no-one recognised him. Rumours of drug rehab and the like are all bullshit.

There was also some talk of the network taking a bit more creative control (as opposed to Dave and ComedyCentral) and the scripts were apparently not as funny. He may have retreated to rewrite somethings without distraction.

I still love HalfBaked.

Nice Guy Ed - yep, as reported on the Ain't it Cool website, Comedy Central are working on the DVD of the three completed ep's from series 3.

Dust - you are confusing me too, is the 420 religion something to do with the hip-hop community? To clarify, I was talking about fooling around with Ms Warden in that peice earlier. Ahem.

// still have the capability to get up in the morning
// and mow the front lawn at 7.30am

// I was talking about fooling around with
// Ms Warden in that peice earlier. Ahem.

this sort of mental imagery really shouldn't be allowed on publicly accessible forums.

Just remembered a hint from last night, Chappelle is in the movie Undercover Brother, he plays the conspiracy brother - www.imdb.com

Thinks Dust has emptied the catcher already. ;)

//shouldn't be allowed on publicly accessible forums

Pretty much exactly why I won't post ANY of Neil Hamburger's jokes here.

Possibly one of the greatest topic hijacks on NZM:

Chappelle, Hotties, Lawnmowing, 420 references, explicit hard core porn in the morn. Fabulous

//I'm ready for it by about 7 or 8.

I'm not sure that I'd be up for quite that early (some days I don't get home until close to 7), but the thing the gets me is that I get home, cook dinner, have a few brews/wines, in a really nice state, have a pleasant as evening, and then around 10 or 11pm (by which point I'm often starting to soberer up), your choice is between gig or bed. I'm in the zone for a couple of hours after dinner, but by gigtime, I'm fading.

Admittedly, it did used to suit me better when I got up mid morning, and did some science in the afternoon, started writing about 9 or 10pm and used to knock off around 1-2am. In that case, if I was heading to a gig I'd just quit work earlier. Unfortunately, I don't get to choose my own hours at the moment.

He's quite funny in Undercover Brother, but the movie is pretty solidly bad. Worth watching to see Dave's subtle brilliance.

Topic hijack? If this actually was a Bar, we would be onto our third beer by now, don't you think? And limegreen would have just walked through the doors. Must be his/her round.

I hope this bar has some outdoor space. Such a mint day to sit in the sun and have a beer. I'll be all parochial, and buy a round of emersons.

Damn straight

Crappy day in Orcs,
:(

Damn.!!!.... straight.
Well I'd be on the spirits by now.

I'd like havana club and gingerbeer please.

METALLICA!

some info on the people behind the Theory site (a bit of a Kaufman wind-up ...)

A lot of the Chappelle stuff was blown out of proportion, if you are to believe the man himself. TIME magazine interviewed him a few weeks after the whole Chappelle has disappeared/gone mental thing.

On the odd occasision I've played at a venue I've found it a pain in the arse that it will start so late.. I mean sure, the first band doesn't ever want to play when there's no-one there to see them, but if you're the last band you don't want it to get to 2am and then have to pack your gear and get it somewhere safe, you've got other things to do, like get up for work at 7am

I liked The Temple for their good scheduled start / finish times, atleast you knew when you were going to play

The only times that we have started late is when there is problem (Someones forgotten something, Soundman is late, etc) but always cover it up as "Waiting for more people" =D
I hate playing really late, just simply because I want to get blind drunk too >_<

i wish they'd start earlier, like at 8pm or something, i used to always miss late acts 'cos i had to catch the last bus home : P

I guess the worst delay for me was Guns'n'Roses back in 1993-ish. They were, as usual, hours late, but Mt. Smart was packed and there was no way you could sit down without getting trampled. That seriously sucked.

One thing strikes me as weird, tho'. All those bands that routinely start late are strangely on time in, say, Japan. Maybe it's got something to do with the contract. I'm just guessing here, but maybe it's "The band forfeits x-amount of yen for every minute of delay" or something.

//"The band forfeits x-amount of yen for every minute of delay" or something.

If you commit suicide by train in Japan, your family gets fined something like a million yen for every minute that it delays the trains.

I believe the amount depends on a lot of factors, but it pretty much boils down to how many people are inconvenienced for how long. Anyway, the amounts are not publicised so there's a lot of speculation and little fact; suffice to say that it is a crippling amount.

Be that as it may, back to topic: If people want to go to gigs later, then fine, hold gigs later, but just advertise the gig as starting later. If you say the curtains up at 9pm, have the first band on at 9pm!

I missed a gig in Tokyo because I thought to find out the starting time at about 8 that night, only to find it had kicked off at 6.30 and was going to be over at about 10.

Hmm.

I missed out on watching Ghost Club on Sunday...
They were playing one of their rare gigs at The Spitz on Sunday Night for FREE with THREE support bands. I was so, so, sooooo looking forward to seeing them play for the first time. But I had work the next day, and the support bands (with one exception) really irritated the hell out of me.
First act was scheduled for 6.30 (I think), didn't start setting up his gear until 7.30 and that took 30 to 40 minutes, there were these massive, 30 - 40 minute gaps between bands where the supports just drank beer and talked while we waited for them impatiently, empty stage in front of us... second support played well, but third support hadn't even tuned up properly, so we wait for them to tune up, then one guitarist starts playing distortion noise at full volume for 5 minutes or so with the soundman turning the PA up to try and drown him out while the rest of the band are standing about on stage like stunned mullets waiting for the other guitarist to sort his crap out... by the time the third support even began doing their thing, THAT WAS IT for me, breaking point... I decided the frustration was bigger than the pay-off, so I left... my mate stayed on and watched Ghost Club kick arse, but I just couldn't stand the build-up. I don't regret leaving early, it was doing my head in.

do you remember the name of the support bands?

No, but I think some of the gig posters might still be up- I'll keep an eye out on my way to work for the billing. At the same time, I don't really want to name and shame eh? But I was really cheezed off- the whole way home I was power-walking, it was manic. What's happened to me, I'm not usually so impatient!

"Stolen presents... Ghost Club, Hot Silk Pockets, Manic Cough, Oxen Of The Sun."

Manic Cough were actually really good, but the gaps between the sets, the lack of preparation from the musicians, the later it got on a Sunday night, and it just wasn't fun.

Apparently Ghost Club were gob smackingly good- I am told their stage banter for the night was 'we don't care if you think we're shit.' Hah!
