Henry Rollins added to Big Day Out
13 December 2005

A performance by entertainer Henry Rollins has been added to the New Zealand Big Day Out line-up.

Rollins, a singer, author, activist, actor, publisher, will perform his spoken word show for just the second time at the Auckland Big Day Out on January 20 next year.

Rollins first performed his show, Breakfast With Henry Rollins, at the Donnington Rock Festival in the UK earlier this year.

It is described as "storytelling, stand-up comedy and political activism". "Touted as a profane camp counselor telling stories round the campfire, Henry Rollins shares fascinating and riotously funny tales from the road with energy and enthusiasm to burn."

Rollins is the front man for legendary punk act Black Flag and the Rollins band.

Forums: NZ Music,

I'm def curious to see how the spoken word thing works in a festival environment, though I'm sure he will probably still have more presence then most of the bands playing. looking forward to it.

I've seen him do his spoken word thing twice in Aotearoa. Once at the Powerstation (where he demanded some annoying talking guy be thrown out), and at the St James.

I'm wondering if BDO will suit spoken word, cos spoken word seems to need an audience that can really focus on the words the performer is saying.

But this has pretty much been the tipping point for me to go to this next BDO. I'm looking forward to it regardless, ow.

What do you mean by "second time" ?

second time at a festival to a crowd come to see bands? i think...

Second time for this particular show?

Hmmm this sounds interesting..........
so I guess no band??

He was wicked at Donnington- if you're going, I totally recommend you make the time to catch his set... well worth it!

I was lucky enough to see him perform at Roskilde festival in 2000 (this was with no band)

Was facinating - poetry, rhymes, messages but was a different experience from watching his tattooed frame scream like a banshee into the mic.

From memory i think i misheard parts of it as the Nine Inch Nails stage crew were on sound check on the next stage, again this could happen at BDO

Same lyrics however.

Really not sure how this would go down with the teenage crowd texting each other about their first pash on the stairwells around the stadium.

The kids might not get it - then again they might, the guy is a legend

The kids can go watch Dei Hamo, or something.

i want to watch him scream like a banshee.

i'm hoping he just wanders around talking to people at random. Like a thrid-rate performance artist in the grandstand....

/The kids might not get it - then again they might, the guy is a legend

That's something I totally respected about the Donnington show- the crowd were mainly in their teens, and judging by the limp applause when he came on stage, most of them had no idea who the Rollins was-
but he didn't really seem to expect recognition from the crowd anyway, and within a few minutes he had the whole venue in the palm of his hand. Wicked entertainer.

I'm 17,

and even I know Rollins is god

I'm suprised to find that he's not actually performing, but I'm open

...and willing...

And by performing i mean singing...

I've saw him do his spoken words shows the 3 times he's done it in New zealand and it was and is very entertaining.

If you watch the bit of Don Letts "Punk Attitude" where he "rants" then you get an idea of his style...

Now the rumours about him being gay... hmmm well and a secret drinker...aahhh yes right...

mumble mumble bathtub mumble

what u saying fool ?
