don't know if this has already been posted or not, but as usual i'm too lazy to check! how far do youse want to go with your music?
for me i would ideally like to have a band and make 3 cds and be popular nationwide and in AU (but i can't imagine being big in the US 'cos it just seems too distant), also it'd be cool to be the best Christian band in NZ 'cos i think NZ Christian music is kinda average, not that i've gotten around to writing any better than average Christian songs yet
what about the rest of you rockstars?

one of my goals is to save nzers from losing thier identity whilst culling a load of shit music!
for this we need to get rid of nz on air or encourage them to drastically change direction.
this little peice of info was forwarded to me the other day - it's from an email from mr smyth to mr mason...
"......A couple of things to say -
* First ... NZ On Air's music video funding decisions are decided solely on the basis of the commercial airplay potential of the song. It's all about airplay because, when it comes down to it, that's the business that we are in - the broadcasting business. We don't means-test the applicants. It's not like a social welfare or dole system, based on who needs it most. It's all about airplay - creating and backing airplay hits.
* Second ... the music video funding is not going to Neil Finn and Bic Runga. It is going to EMI New Zealand (for The Finn Brothers video) and Sony New Zealand (for the Bic Runga video) to help with the massive costs that they have to invest to make and market records by artists at that level - costs that they are going to find hard to recoup in a market as small as New Zealand, even if the artist sells a lot of records. I have seen the costs that Sony incurred on Bic's Beautiful Collision album (for example) and I doubt very much that they are in profit yet, notwithstanding the 10 times platinum. In some ways, in a market the size of New Zealand, the bigger the artist, the more they need the help! The Finns is a bit of a different situation because they are signed to Parlophone in the UK but Parlophone has come to the end of the road with the record and is not investing any more into marketing. Which means no more music video money. That leaves EMI here in New Zealand with no option but to fund the Finns' videos themselves if they want to prolong the life of the record and keep working it at radio. Which is what we, for our part, want them - and need them - to do of we are going to keep the local music content % on radio increasing. Which is what it is all about.
* Third ... we want our funding policies to encourage the big record companies to continue to invest in local artists and to invest more in local artists. It would be a seriously retrograde step if we were to introduce measures to lock out the big record companies from funding assistance with local artists, big and little.
Anyway ... that's where we are coming from ..."

But some people like shit music. Not everyone wants to be intellectually stimulated or artistically challenged every time they turn on the radio.

but think of it like this... people who eat mcdonalds don't care what they eat. if they could eat something healthy maybe they would, but they actually can't be bothered. if there was a free healthy sandwich stall next to a mcdonalds I'm sure people would take a free sandwich...
it's the same as the radio...
plus, it's doesnt have to be really weird or political or brilliant to be different to the norm. it just has to be from the heart and made with love. not made with a cheque book and a piece of carbon paper!

another of my goals is to encourage local music to 'keep it real' by having a record label which releases music by artist who 'keep it real!'
also collaborating with great and talented people who keep it real and using established routes of communication to bring new artists to ears of people who may appreciate it.

A much more achievable goal than changiing govt policy! but hey man good shit for being consistently fckd off, the funding system is so off balance its ridiculous.
of course they want to keep large buisnesses investing in nz music, but does that mean they don't want to incourage small buisnesses as well. Arch Hill didn't get any funding this last round and they have some awesome releases coming up. So how do you put a value on the amount of time and effort someone like Ben howe puts into promoting NZ music. Comercially viable has come to mean 'probably shit'...i pretty much can't stand listening to radio at all (even the Bnet stations don't do it for me lately) and subsequently my taste in music is ggoing further and further back in time.
....by the way i think i called you Cody in chch, i was a bit pissed aand must have been thinking about the mint chicks. or maybe i didn't call you cody and i am just paranoid. Whatever the case i have had too much coffee and i am typeing too fast. Stream of conciousness posting!

no worries!
the good thing about the situation is that whole age thing... you see humans die.
if you take for example most of the head honchos in record companies/radio/funding bodies
used to be the people like us - doing it... in bands - recording - whatever...
it's only gonna be another 10 years before they all fall off and then a space is created
for a whole new bunch of genuine, passionate music folk.
we just need to think about that now so we can create strong, positive unions within
local music so we can be confident, genuine and not narrow minded when it comes to taking
up those spots...
I'm in this truck for the long haul wether you like it or not.
I'm hitching on your coat tails just to steal your motor...
I'm here to fight for the spark in the firework of NZ music.
fark you all who want to turn on the radio to hear some mindless shizzballs.

Funny - I'd been thinking about this last night.
My goals are pretty straight forward...
- Keep playing music (harder than it sounds)
- Enjoy playing music (harder than it sounds)
- Keep playing gigs (could be quite hard)
- Distribute 1000+ copies of an album I have (will) recorded (want to do this in the next 4 years - ie before I'm 35!)
Basically I just want to record a good album under my own steam, and have enough people like it that there are more than 1000 copies of it in NZ (wether sold of given away).

why has there been 200 views since the last thing was posted - but no one wants to have an opinion?
is it that much of a tired subject?
why have I got emails from other musicians stating that they like what I have posted up on this thread.
but why do they not want to be counted in this forum?
why do people car privately but don't want to be heard publicly - are you all that scared of not getting any money????
how will change come if no one says anything?

To change things in a democracy you need an awful lot of money.... err political clout. NZ on Air has been far to profitable (both in terms of visability and actual financial outlay) for the government to can it now. Though I don't agree with the way the funding is allocated (as I think it dirties NZ's musical heritage) I don't think we will be seeing an end to it in a hurry.
I think instead of looking at ways to change NZ on Air it would be more useful to look at how the publishing industry could be crashed - a radical shakeup in how works are published would do more to assist musicians (and punters) than modifying NZ on Air.
I admire the words you say though sir.
