SOUTHEN AMP???

Ok, so I traveled all the way from Wellington to Christchurch for the Southern Amp music festival… which by the way ROCKED, a totally wicked line-up of bands (and Ministry of Sound acts) I definitely recommend it. But I found about it out through a mate’s mate, and maybe they didn’t advertise it enough or something cos while the crowd was awesome, I would have thought that waaay more CHCH locals would jumped at the chance to see these bands live! Most of the crowd we meet were from Queenstown, Nelson, Auckland or Wellington!!! So someone told me it was the same weekend as Christmas In The Park, but PLEASE is Christchurch that LAME!!? If this concert was in Wellington or Auckland it would have sold out, not that Im complaining I’m sweet with the members of Pluto, Elemeno P, End of Fashion and The Living End being comfortable enough with the crowd to just cruise through and have a beer and chat with us!! But man, WAKE UP Chch or you’ll lose a good thing. Could someone from that Island tell me what’s going on!!?

Forums: NZ Music,

Most people I spoke to and I agree that for the price there weren't enough acts that we wanted to see. Maybe its because people I know share similar music tastes, but this festival wasn't catering to them.

And yet another, sorry but I really think that first review was a bit rough...

Yeah, The Press article is almost right about one big name band. But then again if you look at the BDO line-up for next year, there are maybe like 3 big names more playing in Auckland than the line-up that was at playing at Southern Amp at the weekend!

Its got heaps of the same bands! On the day The Bleeders replaced Hoo Doo Gurus, which was fine with me! They had The Living End, ElemenoP, Pluto, End of Fashion, Steriogram, Breaks Co-op, the D4, Spiderbait and Blindspott.

Also the Ministry of Sound tent at Southern Amp had wicked line up, Sola Rosa, Minuit, legends Kid Kenobi & MC Sureshock, and Savage, King Kapisi, Mark Dynamix and DJ Sir-Vere and MC MZRE.

I'm not from Chch, but travelled down for the festival and I thought it rocked. The South Islands random man, would would rather pay for you concert tickets and airfares to Auckland than go to a concert in your own city?? Man, what would rock down there if that line-up doesnt!?

Bring it to Wellington and it would sell out...

well the big day out is bringing bands my friends and I actually want to see.
And yes I'll gladly pay to go up to auckland for bands I want to see.... the only thing that floated my boat from southern amp were 2 local acts, one of which played for free on the night before at the Dux.

Therefore it wasn't worth paying the ticket price.

If it had just been a regular festival picking some great bands, rather then trying to be a "semi-transparent" showcase gig for EMI, then it might of worked. I guess though, this is the way they can justify continuing the event even though nobody went because it might sell a few more records.

//if you look at the BDO line-up for next year, there are maybe like 3 big names more

thats not really true at all.....white stripes, franz ferdinand, iggy and the stooges, mars volta, kings of leon, AFI, The Magic Numbers....etc and southern amp had like NZ bands and a couple of oz bands that are not that huge here, hmmm. and on thursday they announced the line up on C4 like 2 DAYS BEFORE THE SHOW! Not very well publicised; someone must have lost some big cash.

blink did EMI put this on?

I am not totally positive bro, though a few people I've talked to have agreed that this is what it looks like...there were only two? artists playing who weren't on EMI and the whole festival idea with those artists seems hair brained to me...the only thing I could possibly see as a reason to put those particular artists together is if it was doubled as an EMI artist showcase....that way I'm sure much of the expenses could be written off.

and do't forget The Go team and 2 Many Djs. I reckon 2 many Djs are gonna be the highlight of the day...they are gonna fucken kill the boileroom if that is where they are playing.

// they are gonna fucken kill the boileroom if that is where they are playing.

ooh shit yeah.

along with soulwax and James Murphy and Mylo. i hope its a rainy day.
Though last time i was in the Boiler room, listening to underworld and reminiscing about the good old days of acid and warehouses and psychedelic costumes, some P Princesses (or maybe it was E) came prancing in, complete with fairy wings, white boob tubes and - i was shocked- GLOW STICKS.. It just kinda annoyed me that these were the same kids complaining that Kraftwerk was shit. And hell, i just wasn't feeling too tolant that day. Had had enough of people. Man i hate crowds. oh. um. yeah. well, see ya in the Boiler room baby/ don't step on my toes.

Kraftwerk were definately one of the best things i have ever seen at the BDO...and i loved watching all the dance monkeys flee in disgust. It totally creeps me out being in the boiler room. its dark and sweaty and often the only light is off boy racers chaffing back on there lightbulbs of meth. I guess its just not my scene...

wish id
seen them

D4 must have been busy, playing Wellington with the Foos on friday, Southern Amp in chch on Saturday then back with Foos up in Auckland on the same day!!

I think its true that a lot of people would have gone to x-mas in the park, but it seems a HELL of a lot of chchians went to wellington to see the foo's. I wanted to go to southern amp but with my flights being unable to be altered I had to stay in welly (by gum you treated me well tho, wellington). I'd say at a guess a good 1000-1500 chch peeps that would have gone to southern amp were strewn around the country. Lets hope they get a better date for next years.

Are you kidding me??? If EMI was going to put on a concert like this as if they would do it in Christchurch!!!

Most people I've talked to said that the organisers where LOCALS that wanted to try to start something similar to BDO in the South Island as you guys miss out on heaps of big acts, esp. compared to the North Island, so as its the first one (...thats IF they do it again...) I guess they will build up numbers and get bigger acts every year, but then it will cost more, which will suck (... just like BDO, which took a good couple o f years to grow to how it is now, so it says on their website...). EMI artist showcase! Man, your dreaming!!

But anyway, why does it matters who the record company is? What record company would be cool with you??? Who gives a flying duck...?

// EMI artist showcase! Man, your dreaming!!

I don't think you realise how shit works. it may not nessacarily be an "artist showcase", but VERY likely EMI might have underwritten some of the expenses on the condition that the show was basically only artists from their roster.

This is similar to when AIRNZ ran that competition for NZer's to vote for their favourite NZ artist to win heaps of free AIRNZ travel. The fact that the entrants were all artists on the EMI roster was no coincidence.

Nothing is as it seems

PS...

I wasn't bitching (unlike me I know) Just simply pointing out that perhaps if a record labels interests weren't dictating artists choice, then perhaps a better range of artists could be selected.

Admittedly there were a good few EMI artists, but there were also other labels represented by Elemeno P, Spiderbait, Sir Vere, Sola Rosa, and the D4.

I really liked The Living End (definite highlight!) and I thought it wasn't until End of Fashion or Spiderbait that the crowd really starting getting into the swing of things - when the Sun came out. Not really into Hip Hop but I really enjoyed seeing King Kapsi for a couple of tracks. Made the trip up from Queenstown - it was only after a link was shown at http://www.forthemasses.net that I found out about it. Looking forward to the next one!

If they decide to do it again next year, I look forward to hearing what the line up will be
