Okay, well I have never been to the Big Day Out, and I figure that this time since I have a chance of going, and the bro's band is playing, I might mosey along for a look see. Is it worth it? Never mind the bands......Fat Freddy's and Gestalt Switch are the only ones I want to check out. What I'm asking is what is the atmosphere like? Is at an experience that's worth having? Is the amount of people there too much? Considered opinions only, please!

Yes go. BDO is a great time I have been twice and am going to make it a 3rd next year.

BDO is definitely good for people watching. Extremely entertaining that way, but I wouldn't go *only* for that.

Heehee the freaky Slipknot fans this year were very entertaining

Well, I've been to 4 BDO's now and if you want my 2cents... Yes - cos the atmosphere is amazing, the bands are definitely there to rock, and the crowd is amped for a good time! But I have to say... not wanting to be negative but... sometimes just waaaaaaaaaaay tooo crowded. After about 2 hours the seething sweaty smelly mass of bodies everywhere sucks. Having the bands stop, demanding the crowd move back cos all the folks in front of them are being crushed is annoying. Maybe they could do something with the crowd or space issue. If your in any way claustrophobic I’d recommend the Southern Amp music festival, in Chch, quality music and just as good as atmosphere wise!

I have to say that the old gut instinct says no. I thought I would get input though........one guy I know who's a muso said, and I quote " You hate walking, you'd be all day on your feet.....don't do it!" So there you go. I hadn't thought about that aspect of it at all, really. So I think I'll give it a miss. Thanks for your opinions, everyone, and Heather, once again, you have simplified it for me. You are quite right - loud noise, crowds.....not my cup of tea at all. So cheers!
The BDO?? ...
The BDO?? Worst....Episode....Ever
Too many preppie kids (AKA The pestilence) plaguing the place when it never used to be the case, bands which have become increasingly lame over the last few years and appealling to the popular kids than to "bruvvas". The BDO is in my opinion a big waste of time and money, worst episode ever!

Its a good atmosphere, shame that BDO is getting crapper (Band wise) every year.
1999 - Soulfly, Manson, Korn - BRILLIANT
2000 - NIN, Foo's etc - Wicked
2001 - Mudvayne, Limp Bizkit, Rammstein etc - AWESOM
2002 - Utter load of shit
2003 - Utter Load of Shit
2004 - Utter load of shit
2005 - Utter load of shit
2006 - The Biggest, Crappest, shittest line up where most people in their right minds would not shell out that amount of money to see some shit acts that sound like they recorded through a tin can in a garage.
The only good acts for 06 is: Shihad, Mudvayne, BS, Iggy Pop...THATS IT.
Understandable that some people like this retro shit (it should have stayed in the 60s and 70s)
But the White Stripes??! A chick who can't drum and guy who writes and sings the shittest songs? And to my knowledge this monstrosity of a "Band" is headlining. -_-
In my view, it's going to go a little like this:
06 - Retro, Dub, Hip hop
07 - Pop-rock, Dub, reggae, hip-hop
08 - Dub, reggae, Hip hop
09 - Hip Hop
2010 - Loss of interest.

Oh i forgot Fat Freddies Drop, they're awesome.
My further rant: BDO used to be (mainly) a Rock/Metal festival. It's been going downhill ever since 1999

I suppose it depends what sort of music you like, Mungo. It does seem to have moved away from it's sort of indie roots really. (Not that I've ever been - I have mates who like to go to it from time to time). I did wonder why Breaks Co-op were playing there next year. And they're really the only reason I would go. I like retro shit, but I don't know that BDO is the place for it.......
I do apologise for calling you Mungo, ...
I do apologise for calling you Mungo, Mongo!
I did like the retro stuff for a bit ...
I did like the retro stuff for a bit too, until there we're to many bands that sounded excactly the same coming out. But i just don't see how people find the White Stripes good. In all fairness, their music completely sucks ass. Ive seen bands that are absolutly fucking brilliant onstage who have mastered their instuments and get no credit. When this "Band" came out, with a drummer and Guitarist who can barely play, rip out some crap as riffs with shit beats, and they get lots of credit on how good they are.
My 2 cents.
What about system of a down and ...
What about system of a down and slipknot last year,
I agree this year sucks major ass - and the white stripes arent' nearly the shittest act, they're one of the better bands imo - while I wouldn't rush out and buy the album, their stuff is pretty easy on the ears in the scheme of things
