What a wonderful show on Saturday night. The Opera House was an incredible venue for these two groups. It was a very intimate show for a large, seated venue.
Really enjoyed the new Phoenix Foundation material! And SJD blew me away too.
What did everyone else think?

The Phoenix Foundation were amazing, and to see them in that kind of setting was just brilliant. It was definitely one of my top three gigs of the year.

It was most tasty wasn't it? Anyone have favourite songs? I'd have to say Nest Egg really did it for me. And what was that song about "4 years"? Was that new? I bloody loved it!

Was it four or 40? I loved that song too. And waiting for the "........IT'S A LIE!" is so good in 'Nest Egg'. And 'Slightest Shift in the Weather' was exquisite, and the kid that was in the movie - so cute! And the comedy duo act was fantastic and oh oh oh just all so great. If I was a certain musician who came out from backstage to talk to friends and text all the way through, I would be very very ashamed of myself.

Yeah, think it was 40 years, but damn it was good. Does anyone know if this has been released on a compilation as of yet?

haha...this has been frustrating and the topic of many conversations as it is the fav live phoenix song for many. The only way you can get it (as i am aware) is on the sampler CD they did for that NY magazine. They haven't released it in any other way. man, its a great song.

Well, I'd be pretty damn happy with Saturday's performance of that song... and obviously it was recorded. I'd never heard of it before... but it's pretty exceptional to see a song you've never heard before performed live, and then to be so moved by it. But I guess that's the Phoenician magic...

actually.. huh-hum... National Radio did a recording of 40years just before Helen Young studios was demolished. Who knows, it may well turn up on Home Grown some time soon...

yeah we have two live to air recordings of that song...both quite diferent. One very rocky version done at radio active with Stevie G on keys, the othe at Helen Young which is closer to how we play it now. We tried to record it for Pegasus but the mood wasn't right. Next album maybe.
Thanks to everyone who came on saturday. it was a humbling experience that we enjoyed very much.

Oh holy night. It was sure a fine fine evening. Much like every other Phoenix Foundation gig I wet myself JUST A LITTLE when Nest Egg was played. I LITERALLY (literally Joanna..) cannot get enough of that song. I would marry it if I could.
Even being temporarily blinded every few seconds by the stage lighting was fun times.
And and and... the banter is becoming very reminiscent of Finn-banter which is of course the very best.
And everything fucking rocked.

Hey all cool cats.
As Sam sayeth, 40 YEARS sounded cruddy when we recorded it 4 da UNICORN album? Twas a different version. Not BAGUS! Now we have fresh style and we will do a streetwize recording of it. Youse all is grouse.

I daresay it was the best gig I've been to all year. I thought there might have been a conection between 40 years and the name Moses, but p'rhaps not.

Over the entire course of this last week I've been trying to come up with inventive ways of explaining to people just how goddamn fantastic and uplifting that show was - the phoenix were truly world class - fucking supersonic, and they were obviously having a good time of it up there - filling each of the songs with the most superb arrangements and an even more extraordinary scope of sound than on record.
.....Old songs, new songs, The Drinker, 40 years, Sister Risk, etc explosive, heartbreaking, loving, hilarious, epic, intimate, fearsome....add what you want into the mix - it was probably in there somewhere.....the visual accompaniment was superb and really added to the experience (especially that song about 'going to war' with the frigate getting scuttled and everyone cheering - magic!).
Best band in the country right now? Hell no - how about the most deeply talented, magical, amazing, galactic sounding band the country has seen in fucking YEARS.
