hi everyone
i'm doing a school assignment, and part of it is: "Write a 1200 word essay analysing the impact a New Zealander has made on New Zealand music."
so i decided to do John Toogood (vocalist from Shihad). basically i need info from everyone whos old enough to remember when shihad appeared on the scene. what do you guys think shihad did to new zealand music? where was our industry headed and did shihad change it at all? does anyone here know john, if so what's he like.... hell does he support a new zealand music quota?
theres so many questions you could answer, basically im looking for reasons why shihad the band (which i can easily link to Mr Toogood) is or has been important to new zealand musical culture.
anything, even apparently useless shihad/john trivia, is appreciated.
cheers people, don't let me down.

I made him a latte once when I worked at a cafe on cuba street. MY workmate seemed to know him quite well, so I let them talk for a while, secretly thinking 'OHMIGOD, OHMIGOD...'
In the end I found the strength to join in the conversation, which was about life in oz. I asked how they get from place to place, imagining record company $$$ and private jets. I mean, how else would you do it in oz, it's f%$#'n huge!
They drive to every gig in a couple of vans, to be more specific, the australian variant of the Toyota Previa. 1000's of k's together on the road in vans. They can get catty, all caged up together like that, but they are quite used to life on the road and it's normal to get edgey from time to time. Just ride in different vans untill you cool down enough to say 'I'm sorry, it was all my fault!'
ONE THING I definitely got from John is that there is a old-school Iron Maiden bogan inside of him desperate to get out... :) Although a well spoken, polite bogan.
On a more personal note John re-affirmed to me that you don't need to fake an American accent to be a great singer.
Hope this helps!

And Shihad led to HLAH, HLAH led to Weta, Weta led to Gordons, Gordons led to Bailterspace, (not necessarily in that order...) so they basically opened my eyes to all this beautiful NZ music I never would have heard otherwise. WE ROCK!

isn't john from hastings?
I've heard sightings of him skulking around there...
I digged his wide-eyed interview on space with those gimps trying to cajole him along with all their TV POP HYPE - he just stayed himself - a bit frenetic and wild... then when they played their live to air bit he was just mental - he so gets into his music guitar mic - so full on

He's done a lot for kiwi music, rawk especially. Shit, imagine if Push Push has become as enduring and relatively successful?
But he hasn't done much for nutrition - that boy needs to eat a few more weetbix or at least wear a belt on stage.

im also really interested in peoples opinion..... what did shihad do to the nz music scene??? were we in a black hole of talent at the time of their rise or did they beat out lots of amazing bands to take their deserving place at the top of the scrapheap?

ok ok ok anyone who thought i wouldn't come here and be as annoying as possible with my endless shihad ramble must be mad because hey here i am...
ok well there are many many sites on shihad, although some may seem hard to find solid pages... i've found quite a few pages with a lot of archives and interviews and stuff i would have never have heard of with out the help of... i'[ll come back with those sites later... if you want to know anything about where the boys live now... Brighton, victoria... i'm not sure if that's ture because st.kilda is also rumoured, but that's just form what the boys have said.
Um well churn was pretty big for the industrial scene, and really exploded, and killjoy was pretty big too.... around the time of the fish t.v the boys went into S>m>l with um one of the dudes from HLAH.
Argh i know too much about the band but have to go... sorry for the crud crud information, but email me with any questions and i'll get to the bottom of them for ya... ta ta peach
oops c.d not t.v... JOn's older Sister ...
oops c.d not t.v... JOn's older Sister and Bro were also very
influential on his music tastes, so the champ says. His sister was a punk who got him into bands like P.I.L, while his brother was more of a rocker *i think*. He went through what he calls "a goth phase" where he was really into the cure, among others, putting their DISINTERGRATION up in his top ten band lists. so many bands have been influential on him, rock bands like mettelica etc and others such as my bloody valentine, the skeptics, jane's adiction, the clash, and many more.
as you probably know, the fish c.d was not completely loved, with their being a harsh change from industrial so short, complete pop songs. The fish cd, in my opinion, is still just as good as any, with a very complete sound, and wonderful guitar riffs, ranging from the hectic to the dreamy. it was a real experimental phase, and you can also see more of this in S/M/L's work.
Oh yeah and shihad themselves are of ...
Oh yeah and shihad themselves are of course very influential.
One of the guys in ministry, loves the had, he even put *churn...or kiljoy* at number one during a rolling stones "top ten albums of all time" thingy, and jon included *ministry - incase you don't feel like showing up" in his. Shihad are very chumy with a lot of aussie bands here too like grinspoons and magic dirt, let alone people like the guys from ministry.
Shihad won "artist of the year" "hardest rocking band of the year" in ROlling stone here too, and although they are not exactly huge here, they still have a fairly large fan bass, and won a new legon of fans over with the wonderful shihad/motor ace gigs that were here about a year ago. Oh and don't forget about Jonnys dancing style on stage, he goes mad! he has fallen of so many amps and had to stay in a chair for one gig claiming he "felt like ben harper.... however he feels!"
There are also plenty of jokes made with his "uniformed
t-shirts, argh i could go on for years, and years.
well ta-ta i'll come back later, all my shihad stuff is at home....argh if you want to know anything, email me the questions, because my fingers are sore from typing... ta-ta
I reckon there's lots of bands stuck ...
I reckon there's lots of bands stuck in a genre - and occasionally a band will come along who will flesh out their genre so completely - challenge their own influences - and work really hard for years and years - and even survive to transcend that genre - maybe even become iconic of a genre - and this is how I see shihad
also - read their lyrics - they're saying heaps of cool natural everyday stuff that flits across most our minds at some stage in our lives - they're not relying too much on heavy rock anthem cliche's

You know what's really cool? I am having a great time reading these posts, especially since I am totally un-informed when it comes to NZ/Shihad history!!
Jimi, I would LOVE to read a copy of the result from all of this help you're getting! If you could e-mail me the essay, or post it on here or something I think that would be really really cool of you! I can't wait!
This is why I love nzmusic.com. I always come across new great music, rockin' bands, and killer fans!
PS: I haven't posted much lately because I've been deadly busy with the subject at my link below...
