That really felt like a kick in the balls, I played heaps last year. Granted I am not Neil Finn, but it was heaps for us. ALSO, we were fucken album of the week on contact which mean that we were played once an hour for 7 days, add it up. Jeez guys, this is my only income from music, I dont even need to mention that I get around 1000 downloads and up to 4000 streams a month on mp3.com.au , on top of that I didnt even get to drink free piss at the scrolls. If you cant be arsed looking after the little guy then why the fuck do we need you? Surely Angus Young and Neil Finn can hire their own Royalty collection society...

i think re: student radio the methodology is this: music is a valueless resource to be used to keep radio wannabees in the an exploitive job.
i had a similar experience where a station killed alot of my music through overplay and i never got a cent.
i think noizyboy justified this in that the listenership of these stations is too low and the stations themselves can't afford the fees...
i recall trillion also had a problem with a tv theme.
basically apra only works for those important enough to be invited to the shindig

Don't use APRA and establish licence agreements with all those organisations which broadcast your music. Easy!
Maybe.
My understanding is b.net stations just get sampled by APRA once or twice a year and they extrapolate royalties based on what was played during those weeks. If that's the case, you can be thrashed to death on one of those stations for 6 months, but if your music wasn't played in the key week it never happened. Royalty-wise.
Actually, if I'm remembering a hazy conversation from years ago correctly, this sampling business might've been what originally kicked off NZ music week.. or at least established the timing of it.

they certainly do this best to tie in nz music weeks with sample periods. the bnets are cash holes as they have small audiences who don't like big cheesy companies advertising on THEIR stations. I know that Radio Active has turned down show sponsorship from McDonalds coz they felt it would alienate the audience etc. SO anyways the bnets don't pay very much to apra. They real money comes from big gigs (BDO etc) tv and mainstream radio. From indy to mainstream artists the jump income is huge and unbalanced much like every monetary situation ever but how else are they gonna do it; give more money to people whose music reaches a smaller audience because they need it more?
But I aint complaing..I can pay my cellphone bill this week and maybe buy that Lucidtone Tremelo pedal i've been dreaming of for the last six weeks. OOOOOOh it sounds so nice.

that party zi ji is complaining about is like ccf turning round one year and saying fuck the starving little african kids, this year we're putting on a spread but we're only inviting the 100 most generous sponsors ( +our advertiser's+our stationary wholesaler's+our voice's+our knockout blond girlfriends' and their mistresses' families)
it's innappropriate use of funds.
it's like the gov throwing an annual invite only gst party
but they're not real too open about it in the contract,
what happens to the surplus,
but u figure that party's being paid for somehow,
then u read about the Unlogged Performance Pool.
the unlogged 'coz we can't really be shagged doing thewhole job so we've stuck the rest in a liitle lottery which u can only get to if u can prove to us beyond reasonable doubt that someone did actually play your recording ' Performance Pool.
*members may also be asked to submit verification of their claims and in some cases be asked to submit a Statutory Declaration setting out the basis of their claim

pool
and u don't really cotton on when u sign up.
that the majority of those 5000 member's will never be invited to the party that their $2 (can't be fucked) unlogged performance fee is paying for.
and anyone who's worked at student radio knows that most shit is logged
but APRA can only do 2 weeks a year
on the network that has been the stepping stone and saviour for 80% of all the good music from nz
and
fuck
i was so bored in school C maths, it would've been neat to statisfy the logs from from a years worth of b-net playlists, forensically translating the stoned scrawlings from a 3am soid gold hell super play.
then they invented computers
how hard is logging shit?
but i guess it's a more fulfilling job if ur organization holds an annual slap up bash and publishes the single worst magazine
in the world

hey lucy, do mp3.com.au pay some sort of royalties on downloads and streams? I ain't seen nothing.. hrm
to be quite honest, i don't see why ...
to be quite honest, i don't see why you shouldn't get a small % (via APRA (or even better , directly from the site) for streams and downloads - especially considering they ask whether you are an APRA member or not whenever you upload a song. Those sites are essentially making a killing on you, and while they are mean promotional tools, there should still be some payback - a download/stream is still a broadcast of sorts. Perhaps its time to start lobbying APRA about web content -
Dear oh Dear. //APRA is my only ...
Dear oh Dear.
//APRA is my only Musical income source.
This is APRA's problem? What money did Musicians earn pre-Chunn APRA? Have you attempted to orgainize your own licensing agreements? Album of the Week on a station 20 people listen to in a calander month will never equate to a Bonaza November Chq.
// Free Piss?
It is standerd practice for attendees to pay for there own beverages at functions. I certainley would not think this as un-hospitable conduct.
// Unlogged because we can't be shagged.
well thats it in a nut shell. Failure to file three pieces of paper and get your Mother to witness it says more of the derelict nature of the individual than any believed APRA Collective shortcomings. That the unlogged pool funded those members who had the motivation to enlist is pointless, external denouncments of the Collective Workings are simply farcical. You choose to not follow through with the legal Statues of Membership you wear the percieved injustice.
// Stepping stone and saviour of good NZ music
says who? even if it where "true", when is the great crossover into the nationwide networks going too happen? Isn't half the point of b.net to be "alternative", and minority before you get your Grad and enlist back in the marketplace to support and continue the structures where your Poppa does so well? Radio money is in the Big Stations, More, Rock etc if you aint happening there dont expect a chq even if you can get off your ass and fill in those tiresome three forms. Student Radio is more about wanting a clique and plugging you or your brothers band. (which may not be a bad thing). Advertisers go to the big stations cos there the ones the listeners actually buy things off. Market share means The Feelers "Venus" is worth more than Odessa's "I could beat you in a fight". Should I get an equitable LPR share as the Finn Bros Tour when I'm playing the Wunderbar next week?
// G.S.T. and Party
appaling and tenuous connection. Ones compulsory the other is optional. Don't join, don't moan about unlogged pool. If having a wingding
is a scurrolis waste o' resources then enlist and use your undoubted oratry skills to champion your cause for the unlogged/unwashed/little man.
// My Music killed by overplay and I never saw a cent.
Overplay? who is listening? if you don't get paid their are legal avenues to persue or if you didnt follow the proscribed track you're a chump for letting yourself get ripped off. Ownership and responsibility are paramount to any "musician" expecting to get paid. Failure to do so is your fault, certainly not APRA's.
Wailing and teeth gnashing over APRA's November Chq's does no-one any good, the inherant flaw in the scheme is many Musicians wanton disregard for Business. (read: cant be shagged)
Jody's show was on CTV, who the hell is looking at that? The reward is in the creation of that product and the assembly of skills and contacts/references that comes from this. There is no money in certain forms of broadcast, do your homework.
If you guys really want to get paid for your creative skills then expect to do the business side. Or hire a Lawyer.
No, I wont be buying a House with Nov APRA arrival, but thats more too do with the lifestyle/political options I persue, than any failure of APRA. Seriously, I think they do a bloody good job, and they are getting better.

so to paraphrase u, it is entirely right that APRA should willfully ignore %96 of b-net playlists
and take 365 days worth of ratios from 14 days, it is preferable for them to publish glossy drivel.
as a member there is a financial threshhold whereby if ur earning less than it, u must cover ur own costs hypothetically spending more than u receive. while another child dies, but for just a dollar a day...this is small money, below fola30's intrrnationally recognized mandate of 'value'

it's a 'compulsory' tax sytem foal, funding all sorts of extranneous suckful crap.

..sorry, just nosey - rope, did you break your "yo" key?
..but FWIW given the high playlist turnover, particularly on indie stations, I agree the idea of choosing just two weeks in the year and suggesting it's a sufficiently representative sample is absurd. Seriously, there are songs that are utterly thrashed for three months then you don't hear from the band for another 12
//then they invented computers
how hard is logging shit?
Hell, I'll put my hand up and write a web-based app for the b-net on the cheap. Wouldn't take me more than a week. Logging = three mouse-clicks. Probably they've already got a system anyway - most of the bFM DJs already put their playlists up on the website.

Im not paraphrasing, although there is a clear mis-communication.
That being the claim of Unlogged equating to spending collected revenue from non-trackable radio play. I am of the opinion that this "Unlogged" Poll is from those credited writers who have not filed paperwork. Four Figures and counting from this collective alone, Democrocy in accreditation sucks eh?I certainly mulled this over on the train to the factory this morning. Either way I think one or both of us has the wrong end of the stick.
Clearly I have read your can't be shagged as from the individual applicant , not APRA.
I don't think APRA is not paying, just that the total funding/revenue is only on the 2 week samplers, which should mean you have a good year/bad year. Anyone stack those weeks?
We have tunes "A"Listed on a number of stations, point is there small fry, even if we "get Lucky" on this 2week sampler it won't mean shit. Although if it did, pick up the phone and request your tracks, or bribe a DJ to p lug your tunes.
I fit the description of little man, yet I get invited to the party every year, maybe it cos they know I wont come? I'm not sure why having a party is a bad idea, I can't begrude the event because APRA does a lot more than drink at the members expense. (hopefully).
80%
Ah, again you are stateing something you hold dearly, good for you, my querey is on this metaphysical stepping stone. To earning more money perhaps? If it is then it will almost certainly involve radio play on at least one of the big three Networks. I am not convinced that the Bnet's have launched many careers, in relation to the NZ content they play. Again this is not a primary concern of mine, or I suspect yours, but you can pump as much Local /Indie as you want just don't expect APRA to sheel out on the %listening audiance. I am in no way disputing your love of being "indiependent" in fact I find it quite comforting, I would like to know what the pathway from bnet is, and what Bands/Entertainers have followed it. Examples if you like to how these radio stations lifted the artists they claim to support.
Product creation
reads as lazy grab for some mythicalartistic moral highground. Which is dis-concerting coming from you, particualry as your line reads as a bitch about $.Contacts/References is directed at the what viewing/listening audiance takes fro the performance/piece and the opportunites that can arise from this. Most will not involve $ but important Musical communication.
I'm a lucky MF, you know that I get to play/have played/will play with some serious cats and the bread is not the issue, the education and enjoyment of those interactions is the driving force behind those decisions. Simply put, if I dont have my shit together in a "business' sense I miss out in the "musical" one. and thats a goddamn shame. If theres someone I want on a session/gig I might do a "less than satisfactory music as spiritual" slot to pay for it. If thats selling out im a guilty man.
Im not sure of this In India bit, I havent made it to Nelson yet.
I think you are unhappy about this only 2 week catchment, fair enough, but isn't it better than what we used to have?
Undemocratic it probably is, but that will not change externally, and it will never change without likeminded societal movement. It may sum up the "Music Industry" quite well too.
So as a firecracker of cerebal energy and a good hearted son o' a bitch you would be unstoppable as a debating force me reckons. So put your boots on and take it to them, I'm sure your man enough. Maybe you could write a letter to the editior in that fantastic magazine they publish.

Ah fuck it. Nah Disasteradio, I dont think they do which is one of my main issues as its my best avenue for spreading the good word. Unlike you, I am far too ugly to perform live. I am really sorry apra and I hope my little vent doesnt get in the way of our lovemaking in the future. I am also sorry to Angus and Neil who dont deserve my scorn. I got a BBQ, Outdoor furniture and a Brazier from my royalties so I should be bloody stoked, not biting the hand that feeds. The end, hi jody.
