is based on it, wondering if the dud series ever made it to our shores cause the movie was pretty good. better than battlefield earth and supernova, really funny too. some of the best lines in any movie to date incl "Do you want to run this ship?" -Yes! "Well... you can't...". Will only be showing in cinemas for a week or two, havn't seen one preview for it on tv, definately a big blockbuster type flick as the crew go around the universe shooting and sh#t and did I mention that it was hella funny? and scary. Lots of martial arts too! go tell your boys frontline!

I saw some Firefly... and yeah - it was terrific. Better than Buffy, maybe.
Will see the movie soon... got some really good reviews from some friends.

Oooh, that's a bit of a big call. I wish Mal called more people dirty little whore girls in Firefly (but of course when I say "more people" I mean "me"). It took me a while to warm to the concept of a show set in space, because I am no trekkie, but I prefer to just look at it as a Western that happens to take place across many planets. I haven't seen the movie Serenity yet, but I'm going on Tuesday and I am very very excited, given how gutted I was to miss out on tickets to the sneak previews. Stupid sci fi club at Vic buying out all the tickets. How dare they be so enthusiastic? Oh wait...

Firefly was no dud... it got sabotaged!
The studio executives all changed after the show was made, and they purposely messed up the showing of Firefly, so that it COULDN'T be popular, to try and show that the execs they were replacing were incompetent and shouldn't have authorised a sci-fi western TV show.
They played (in the USA) episode 2 FIRST, then changed the night and time of the rest of the series... and at the end they played the pilot.
A loss of a great TV show... all for the vanity of some egotistical head honchos.

It is indeed a big call, but one I am willing to make based on the enjoyment I got out of what Firefly I've seen. And that companion... Whoa. Hot.
(note: I am a Buffy fanatic... I've watched all 7 seasons at least twice, and even jumped on to the first 4 seasons of Angel)

I got the tv show on DVD from Amazon. It starts slow but picks up really well. The last episode rocks so hard. Really looking forward to the movie. Reading did some preview back in September but I was away, damnit.

saw it the other day and liked it, trust me you don't have to see the series to understand it as the start of the movie informs you enough. Caught a preview on telly last night, looking forward to city of god directors constant gardner next week. Exocism of emily rose doesn't look too scary, funny laughing in preview.

Those who went to the 24Hr Movie Marathon got a preview... it is quite pooh, unfortunately.
A courtroom drama with flashbacks to possesion type stuff (some sections of which are quite cool.)

Wolf Creek had to be pulled a couple of days before the marathon - so that wasn't shown.
The Descent was outstanding. Best movie of the night. Spelunking hotties encountering otherwordly beings in a claustrophobic sub terranian cave. Lots of shocks, jumps, scary atmosphere, uncomfortable gore and nastiness. My friend fainted upon the movie's completion (and scored a free DVD of Scanners for his trouble)

That was Toy Soldiers. And it was a school for kids wo had been kicked out of prep schools. Evil preps - no doubt LS will have something to say about this.

Dog Soldiers was a fairly recent warewolf movie (from the director of The Descent) - using old school puppets and people in wolf suits running around on all fours.
It was actually pretty good until you got to see the warewolves and until they got into the house for the standoff.

The NZ herald had a special exocisim fold out today which seemed a pretty weird way to promote the movie? I may have to miss this one, not a big flashback film watcher. Constant gardner looks better

Firefly was shown on NZ TV for a while... The DVD of the series has not been released in NZ, but you can find it at some stores (Real Groovey had some a while ago), but it's only available in Region 1 release.
Films pretty good, just basically a long episode of the show - some nice twists (which I won't spoil). You don't have to have seen the series to enjoy the film, but there are some explanations of things for those who did watch the series.

Firefly is probably one of the greatest Sci-Fi shows EVER! I love the concept of country meets Sci-fi :D
Serenity is also a brilliant movie. i give 10/10

I agree - the entire frontier nature of exploration and colonisation makes them a perfect match. However it's not like it's a brand new thing, it's been done in many many sci-fi novels and movies - but firefly / serenity pulls it off better than most. I also like the fact that it's character driven as opposed to special effects or 'concept' - you could translate the story to pretty much any setting and the character interactions would work.

And then that thing happened, with that large bit of wood, and I was like "OMG!" and then I was like "holy crap, if they can do that, then ANYTHING can happen" and I was freaked out even more.

yes... OMG indeed... some deep breaths were needed in the following few minutes.
I came away from that movie on a high... Joss Whedon's letter on the Serenity website is also very nice... speaking of the powewr of the fans.
