Quote: Darkness frontman (and Bono/Chris Martin hater) Justin Hawkins purchased a £350 promo copy of his band's forthcoming album on Ebay in an attempt to stop it from leaking. Hawkins tells BBC News, "It's encoded so we'll have a name and a number - so we'll know which disc it is, who distributed it and who they distributed it to. And that person IS GOING TO GO DOWN."
As the Stereogum guys point out, would you really be scared of getting chased by this guy? [pic: http://www.stereogum.com/img/justinhawkins.jpg]
And, er, 'trial' the new Darkness track - One Way Ticket - at the Work For It website, while it's still live...

Yip, I would be very, very afraid if that was chasing me.

So much stuff seems to get leaked these days. No matter how hard artists try to stop it.
Green Day had to re write Amercian Idiot because the original version was leaked and ended up on the net before the album was even completed after being stolen, I think Linkin Parks Meteora was leaked as well after their studio was broken in to.
Least we forget Metallica and the Mission Impossible " I Disappear" which started it all.
I think Wilco had a good idea by putting all the songs in their latest album on their website for people to listen to as kind of a disposable download, where you downloaded it, it would keep for a few days then it would stop working.
I know Yellowcard have done this with their latest single on their website. To try and avoid it being leaked on to the net by others.
I think though if you like a band enough you will buy their albums...and not dwnload leaked versions of it.Well I would anway.

Wilco seem to have the right idea. I remember when A Ghost is Born was leaked and distributed on a website, instead of going after the website with lawsuits, etc. they instead asked those who downloaded the album to contribute what they would have paid for the album to Medicine San Frontiers. So much nicer than those chaps in Metallica...

Have you seen Metallica sued some band over a chord progression?Metallica claim that this band used an E and D chord I think in the same way Metallica use it and they ended up taking them to court over it.
I think Lars went as far as to even claim Metallica has the rights to using those 2 chords in that particular order.

That was a hoax. Someone (possibly affiliated with the band allegedly being sued) ripped off a page of the Metallica site and put up a fake press release, and within days it was being reported right across MTV Europe. Kinda puts the Spinal tap incident in perspective, eh!

Yet another good reason to avoid the digital domain completely and revert to all that lovely, warm analogue stuff. It is a helluva lot harder to walk away with the masters for lovely vinyl and transcribe it into a form that can be so readily disposed of without any physical item changing hands ... vinyl rulz!!

//vinyl rulz!!
It does indeed... but now I have the problem of having most of my new music in a format that I can only listen to when I am in front of turntables...
Still, it forces me to keep on making fresh mixes on minidisc...

The White Stripes tried distributing promo copies of Elephant on vinyl before it was released in an attempt to prevent it being put on the net. It just meant that you could see Elephant [VINYL] on Limewire along with the traditionally leaked version.

Vinyl ripped to MP3 sounds terrible. As far as leaks go, more of a spitty, splattery affair than a proper torrent (sic)... still, a leak is a leak is a leak... yup, regretting that extra cup of coffee now...

I maybe jinxing us by writing this, but in all the time I've worked at the studio, we've never had a leak .. we did have a misunderstanding once thou where it was thought a leak had happened .. the band at the time wasn't too happy needless to say, it's a long story so won't go into it here, but it did make a small bit in the papers at the time .. and it started our night guy smoking again ..!!!
the trouble is, no matter what format ...
the trouble is, no matter what format it is in, if someone has a copy which they can't simply rip to a file, all they need to do is play it through once on decent gear (i.e turntable or reel into soundcard or hi-fi amp), record direct to Hard Disk, cut into tracks, encode, and share on P2P. for a 70 minute album, it would take around 85 minutes (including removing vinyl or tape noise) and it would sound pretty sweet, even on a standard computer soundcard. For a single, you could do it while you waited for your toast to cook.

I'm having some pretty good results transferring my vinyl to my laptop at the moment... plus, I get to choose how it is EQ'ed.

it can be done, yep - there are some people out there who spend a LOT of time writing encoders just for this purpose.

...sorry 'bout that chief- it's just that the handful I've downloaded are really scratchy/glitchy/compressed. I guess it's down to the quality of the recording/vinyl/LP player/cabling/AD conversion/bitrate/software/blah blah...

I went to that link and I couldn't get the new Darkness single to play, it wouldn't open the page. I am a livelong devotee of hairmetal and the hairmetal lifestyle. Why can't I get this page to open properly? Is is anywhere else??

Most mp3 blogs only leave their files online for a day or two, so it's probably gone.
try googling it - it might be doing the rounds.
