Well thats most useless pre-release I've ever read - I hope nobody got paid for writing that because it provides absolutley no information and gives the impression that local artists are going to be relegated to some stage made out of beer crates...
I thought the people running this were professionals (I'm actually disgusted)
its just the publicity machines in motion- its better than the one they sent out where they threatened us with an influx of Australians if we didn't hurry up and buy tickets.. at least this one shows Cambell Smith + Theresa Patterson to have a sense of humour...
i reckon. that wasted a good few minutes of my life. sorry to be mean.. but honestly. just the angst of wanting to know what the hell is going on with BDO is getting to me I think.
//just the angst of wanting to know what the hell is going on with BDO is getting to me I think.
Well I had my hands cut off in a frenzied machete attack, but you don't hear me bitching about the fine art of amusing press releases that never claim to be anything more than they are, do you? No. So suck it up and be a man.
I am disgusted too, Scott. That stage could be far from being OSH compliant if that guy really has built it out of beercrates. Big Day Out could be putting some NZ artists in real danger with their cavalier attitude to the whole event. The sooner these guys get serious and get someone from Readymix down there to build a sensible concrete platform for bands to play on, the better.
Samkraps, are you mental?? Bands can't play on concrete, that would sound fucked up and they might hurt themselves too when they do some cool jumping thing like I saw James Hetfield doing on C4 the other night.
I think the stage should be made tru skool styles, out of vinyl and like, wood.
A trampoline would be even more appropriate for the kind of thing you are talking about there, Head! Maybe we should start a petition to get that guy Campbell to make it out of canvas and springs rather than beercrates. do you still get credit on beercrates when you take them back to the bottlestore these days? he sounds like he needs some money if he is having to build this stage himself rather than getting professionals to do the job.
//Well I had my hands cut off in a frenzied machete attack, but you don't hear me bitching about the fine art of amusing press releases that never claim to be anything more than they are, do you? No. So suck it up and be a man. //
oooo-eeee defensive. unfortunately for you i'm allowed to bitch so you can just suck it *off*, oh my god heaven forbid anyone say something even slightly derogatory in this forum, lest the bitch-fairy forumhags start laying into you.
thru these comments, i can see that the BDO really means a lot to people. It's like a mecca, a pilgrimage or something.
Is there a consensus on whether or not it has been getting better over the years?
well its always better the younger you are... i would've loved the lineup this year if i was 16 i'm sure... now it just makes me want to lie down and take a nap. Maybe the second announcement will be better.
And Theresa was also kind enough to mail out the release by putting all the recipients in the To: field, as opposed to the BCC: field, so now I (as well as everyone else remotely involved in the NZ music scene) have a copy of her entire hundreds-strong mailing list. Mwahaha.
// This is the first time a stage has been exclusively dedicated to New Zealand acts
wasn't that what the "essential" stage used to be? Shit, its been so long I've forgotten what The essential stage was, but I seem to remember it was small and had lots of kiwi bands play on it...
//but they're happy to consign the NZ artists to the shittest sounding, crappest spot f the BDO?
Exactley my point - you think they'd be promoting a stage for NZ artists as opposed to implying that it's something thats been thrown together from junk. Not too mention it also implies that NZ artists should be kept seperate for the 'main acts'.
//FREAKING OUT about the safety issues implicit in this stage made of old junk!
I don't actually think it will be that small, nor made of beer crates, dude. It might be on the back of a truck or something, though.
Thanks Eddie. I am feeling better already. Will this be a Boost Mobile Stage that is actually mobile then? Bands cruising (not in a gay way) round the Big Day Out on the back of a truck would be kind of cool.
the essential stage really was a shitty stage back in the day - on a concrete concourse underneath the main stand. the concrete was abot the only appealing thing about it altho king loser were on fire there one year though. particularly celia's hotpants. i would love to see that band play again.
Yeah I am full on for the MOBILE Nz music stage.. like a stage on the back of a massive truck.. that way NZ artists can move to where the largest crowds are and play loudly at them until they are forced to listen...
On a more serious note, they should have a tent similar to the carling tent at the Reading festival, a tent that promotes up comings acts and bands tipped to be next years big thing.. not just homegrown talent but not yet famous talent worldwide.. for example The D4 and The Datsuns payed that stage years ago and then 2 years back the Datsuns rock the mainstage with a crowd numbering 200 000 odd.. all bands need a kick start, a helping hand etc... Agreed Big NZ nmes should be in with big rest of the world names, but apart from that I LIKE the idea of a smaller stage for up and coming names and indie acts (unfortunaltey I fear it will still be a stage dominated by Hippidy hopp music)
hey, isn't that jsut about exactly what that press release thing at the very top of this page said? Now I am REALLY confused about what everyone is on about here. Heather's right. Hands up who's on crack today Scott! But I am picking up on this reading tent thing and i like it. brooke fraser could be in it. she does those library ads on tv. i bet the d4 only read comics and porn mags but we could have some of those in there for when brooke is not around.
/Now I am REALLY confused about what everyone is on about here. Heather's right. Hands up who's on crack today Scott!
Nope I left my crack at home today :-)
Basically it all came about cause I organise a gig guide for people at work, and email round when gigs are, updates on touring acts coming to town, advising of good local bands - that sort of stuff. So I emailed the press release round this morning and most of the responses I got from people were - WTF is this? Most people assumed from the release that all NZ bands would be playing on this new stage, and a number of them indictated they got the impression this new stage would be small and hobbeled together. Now the people I work with aren't musicians (well there are a couple) but they're definatley intelligent - hence my call that this was a crap (and misleading) press-release! It's kind of funny, but theres no distinction between what is supposed to be amusing and what is supposed to be factual (you know press-releases are supposed to inform and advise usually)...
So thats where I was coming from - no crack involved (unless you count the crack I'm sitting on)
Scott, usually you and i are on Exactly The Same Wavelength, but you - or your workmates - have lost me here. Doesn't that guy Campbell Smith say in his post at the very top that NZ bands are playing on other stages at the Big Day Out - the Frontlines, for instance, who he mentions? Maybe he should come back and post again to clear things up once and for all. As for your workmates, i'm worried about the contents of the watercooler. Not freaking out yet, but seriously worried. I can't wait for the Stooges.
//Doesn't that guy Campbell Smith say in his post at the very top that NZ bands are playing on other stages at the Big Day Out - the Frontlines, for instance, who he mentions?
Not that I can see - he does mention the frontlines (whom I wouldn't know from a bar of soap) but theres no mention of what stage they are 'headlining' (which is usually an indication on when an artist is playing and not where) and as all the rest of the release is talking about the new stage - it really does read like they're headlining the new stage.

Samkrpas I think that's a bit of a silly suggestion, how could a drummer play (or even set up their gear) on a stage made of a trampoline??
More appropriate I think is someone's back-of-a-truck suggestion. As long as the handbrake is on. And maybe leave it in gear, just in case.
