Im having problems using my iPod with non-iPod headphones. When I am moving around with the headphones in, my iPod keeps randomly pausing. Ive done a bit of research on the net and theres not heaps about this problem out there, even though quite a few friends have the same issue. However, some people have suggested putting tape over the headphone socket in the iPod and pushing the headphone end through. Apparently the problem is the metal ring arounds the plug of the headphone jack, and doing this stops the ring touching the metal of the iPod which causes a short.
Has anyone out there got the same problem? If so, what have you done about it? Has it worked?
If there is already a forum on this problem Im sorry, I havent read it, can somebody please direct me to it?
Cheers

Sorry, can't help you much there, but if I had to guess I'd say its the headphine jack/socket problem.
Quiet a clever way of getting people to buy proper headphones.

it makes sense to stop that contact between the Ipod body, and the metal part of the jack, definitely try that first. . .it sounds like its definitely related to the headphone jack (or cord) - are they new headphones????
it's good that you're getting rid of those shitty apple headphones by the way. . .
i can't imagine spending 500+ on an ipod and listening to it through bud earphones. . .

Yea I was wondering if there was a more permanent solution, rather than taping my iPod. Ill try anything tho, its is so damn annoying! Yea those buds damage your ears, mine end up hurting after an hour or so of listening through them. God bless muffs! (ha.)

Have you talked to the manufacturers? Retailers? Should be covered by warranty (you'd assume) if it's a fault. Why bother dicking round with it yourself - take it to the people who manufactured the shoddy goods to start with and get them to fix it! :-)

ipods pause automatically when the headphones become detached, which you might already know, and if itkeeps pausing will mean that they headphone jack doesnt fit in the given space and/or is too loose in the headphone plug. The fact that you are using NON ipod headphones probably means they wont give a shit if you take it back to where you bought it from and most likely wont be covered by the warrenty,
My advice is buy some headphones that are garenteed to fit properly or use the provided ipod ones.
No biggie. Although it is kinda strange that your headphones don't fit because generally all headphones fit ipods....well so I thought anyways.
The provided iPod headphones are pretty ...
The provided iPod headphones are pretty average compared to muff headphones, let alone the damage they do to you ears. I thought most headphones would fit iPods as well, but ive tried three different muff headphones and the problem still occurs with each pair. I guess it is a good marketing plan; construct the iPods so only those oh-so-recognisable iPod headphones will work. Oh how we are suckers.

You could always solder/use a strip connector to attach the ipod plug to your new headphones. Not a very attractive solution I know. Although you could make a statement out of it, and colour co-ordinate your strip connect with your clothes each day. Or not.

Yes but the provided headphones actually work...thats all.
Go into a shop like bond and bond or whatever and ask them if you can check to see if they headphones fit into your ipod. I think you are using the wrong phones man or maybe you just picked up a dud ipod. Have you tried it with the normal provided headphones to see if its actually the headphones or if the plugs are faulty?

limegreen: not a bad idea, if not a last resort one. Im not very good with the solder you see.
dantheman: That is true, compatible headphones are better than no headphones at all. //I think you are using the wrong phones - yea I thought so, but I tried with 3 different pairs. weird. It does work sweet with the normal headphones, so maybe it is a problem with the iPod. As I said, I know a few people with this problem. My flatmate has the same issue. I have actually taken my iPod back to the shop and asked them about it. They didnt do shit. Maybe ill just go in with arms flailing and voice all loud and irritated.

Check the metal plug bit that you put into the headphone port. I reckon it is a problem with that just not fitting soundly. It could be fractionally thinner which would allow the plug bit to move and become disconnected.

Are they all using NON apple ipod headphones? and/or using headphones instead of the ear buds things?
//I have actually taken my iPod back to the shop and asked them about it. They didnt do shit.
Yeah understandable, they don't care anyways. they just send it off to the manufacturer and charge you if it is not under warrenty.

That is your best bet man, hell they might even give you a brand new ipod just to shut you up hahaha.
Try sony headphones...unless the ones that arent working are sony, if they are Im all outta ideas haha, You might just have to make do with the shitty default ipod ones.

sounds like a big problem with the jack, not the headphones, especially if you've tried a few other headphones and still have the problem.
i've never heard of this problem - got an iPod i chuck any old headphone into, my mates have iPods and have never encountered this, and we all chucked the crappy supplied budphones (who has ears shaped like that anyway!?)
you need to rule out the headphones - can you use them on a friend's iPod for a day and see what happens?
this sounds very crappy ... i hope you get it sorted. have a look on the net for similar problems and solutions, but as i say, i've had a bit of experience with mac stuff and iPods, and i've not heard of this occuring.
as a rule, many Mac stores have atrocious customer service, but there are some out there that really go the extra mile to help / ignore the fact that i'm a dumbass and don't know what model my iBook is and they send me a battery and it's for the 14" and i've got a 12 but they pay for all the postage out to me and back, even though it's my fault ... heh. getting stuff down on paper and asking to speak to a customer service person who's not a hired bored gimp (such as a tech support person - they almost all rock - but the issue is getting to them - they are usually not on the front desk) might help.
or as someone says above, go try out a few headphones and put them through their paces ... hopefully it is not the jack and you will find a headphone that stops the fault from occuring. very odd though.

Man your lucky ilovetheclean. So are all of you out there with functional iPods. Swap?
Yea it looks like I might just have to force my iPod back apon Bond and Bond and make them swap it, and see if it happens with a new one.

i think i'm lucky cos i happened to pick up one of the first generation iPods - the ones that look like Russian tanks next to the supersmall wee new ones. (which reminds me, Dave Letterman has a running joke on the smallness and capacity of iPods)
you should flail and be very upset and yell lots of things about warranty and Consumer Rights Acts etc. this stinks majorly.

B&B were pretty good, I took my headphones back coz they were shit and one earbud stopped working, they just replaced it, and then my ipod froze and they just pressed a couple of buttons and un froze it so they are good about it.
I hope it isnt a jack problem otherwise you could be looking at a long time without an ipod and or having to re dwnload all your songs on to a new one which depending on how many songs you have could take a really long fucken time.

Very interesting. I'm on my third pair of legit iPod headphone and I've just noticed that occasional pausing problem. I keep my iPod in my hip pocket when I'm walking, so it makes sense that doing so could cause the headphone jack to move slightly within the iPod.
Actually, I'd like to take this ...
Actually, I'd like to take this opportunity to ask for help too. I usually listen to albums as opposed to playlists, and about 50% of the time when I press the middle button to start playing the album, it'll be silent for about ten seconds and then skip to the second song. It's totally random as to what albums it happens to (the files aren't bung or anything), and the annoying thing is the iPod's always in my pocket so I can't see what's happening.
This happening to anyone else?
