Righto, for my nanowrimo novel, I'm writing about dreams, so I would be very interested to hear from yiz what kind of common themes emerge in yours.
One of my recurring themes is that I'm in a movie, and since I'm already supposed to know the script, and since it's a movie, I know that everything's supposed to turn out fine...but I'm always in an extremely precarious situation and I can't remember what's supposed to happen next - dodging giant demolition balls, in the middle of an avalanche or a flood, or running away from evil David Bowie, stuff like that.

To dream that you are playing a role in ...
To dream that you are playing a role in the movie, foretells that something from your unconscious is about to emerge or be revealed. It may also represent memories of images or scenes from your past. Alternatively, the dream may be pointing you toward a new role that you might be undertaking. Your unconscious is psychologically preparing you for this new role
Precarious position... could be fear and anxiety
To dream that you feel fear, signifies that you achievements will not be as successful as you had anticipated. You are having anxieties in certain circumstances of your life. However, your worries will be temporary and short-lived.
To dream that you are experiencing some anxiety in some affair, is a reflection of what you may be feeling during your waking life. You may have repressed thoughts, unexpressed emotions, resentment, and hostility that are triggering your anxiety dream. This dream also denotes that you are disastrous mixing business with pleasure.

I have never really had a recurring dream though. I have had some strange ones but I dont generally dream of the same thing more than once.

I have reoccurring nightmares about the people in my life who've caused me trauma - for example, I kept dreaming about Skank for a long time. Generally the people are hurting me.
I also have reoccuring dreams about people that I have unresolved issues with, in which we make headway in resolving the issues.
Finally, I have reoccuring dreams about being hurt, and also reoccuring dreams of a Buffy nature.

I'll show you how dreams have nothing ...
I'll show you how dreams have nothing to do with real life by sharing my dream from last night with you. I won't tell it well, but the content is the important part.
Some friends were going on a road trip to some tiny town in the wop-wops, so I decided to come along. When we got there they told me they weren't going back for ages, and I was really fucked off because I was stranded without a ride. I started hitchiking back to the city, but the guy who was driving convinced me to come and stay at a farmhouse. We had a bit of a feed and then I realised heaps of my mates were there along with my dad and a Frenchman. I was in the bath when the news came through one of them had died skydiving. So me, Dad and the Frenchman took another mate on a skydive in honour of our dearly departed friend.
His rope got stuck on the Orion we were using when he jumped, so we had to cut it but the Frenchman insisted we cut it in two places so as none of the rope used by our dead friend would go with the guy who was still alive and dangling out the back of the plane. Later back at the farmhouse Dad started talking French and again I got really pissed off, so I went out to the barn. The guy from the last Downsize Me was there and told me it was just a hoax, and I wondered what he meant because nothing was happening. Suddenly mercenaries with police uniforms arrived from everywhere and started torturing us by doing stuff like pulling our hair. They took us to a petrol station where I realised this was just a soccer club initiation.
The guy who was in charge of my initiation asked me what I'd like out of the ice cream freezer and I knew I shouldn't say something I actually wanted. So I said a drink of water and he made me try and get a drink of water in a paper cup that was totally broken. The water was outside, and as I was walking to get it he threw a slab of ice the size of my torso at me. I hit the ground and for some reason slid across the forecourt, ice-like. Hiding behind a recently-parked bus, I was suddenly Kate Winslet and it was just like this movie where they graphically showed her having an abortion (as in, showed her insides). I knew I had to get rid of the miscarried foetus to enable my getaway, so I pushed and it came out. Turns out it was an octopus.
Finally, I ran away - as myself again - and some guy called Nacho Lost, who was bald, mustached and totally dressed like Magnum P.I called in his mates and had a gunfight with the mercenaries to save me. This part of the dream repeated three or four times, and each time I would have a conversation with one of his mates about whether Lost was his last name, or whether he has lost his last name.
so the moral of the story is don't read into dreams because they don't make sense.

Oh yeah, I should also mention that i have reoccurring dreams featuring Jimi. Which is, of course, and no disrespect intended, somewhat disturbing.

wow, jimi, that's an awesome description of what it's like while you're in it.
unfortunately i don't remember details so well. i've had three recurring dreams, they haven't showed up for a while - one was me and Richard E. Grant running through apocalyptic city-scape trying to get away from these evil invading aliens that had blades for arms. it was very scary. Richard was really resourceful though, which surprised me. he thought laterally, which allowed us to get away from a few scrapes and we even managed to find a way to kill (grusomely) a few of the aliens.
my other recurring dream was of this nice house - kinda english manor, but not a big 'un - me walking up driveway to the steps, just looking at it, not really going in. i kinda found the house in real life - it was a pretty close approximation of what i'd dreamed, barr a few details - funny thing was that the bass player from U2 - Adam Clayton - owned it.
the other recurring dream involved Hamish Kilgour ... someone told me it was only because i wanted to be him, and then the dream stopped reoccuring.
now i just dream about my thesis. which is sometimes about moving huge blocks of cement around in a tetris-type fashion. with my jedi powers.
well, cleanie, this was one of the most ...
well, cleanie, this was one of the most graphic dreams I've ever had - usually they're very vague and sometimes I only remember them when something sparks me a day or two later. I think the story is (limegreen...?) that the closer the dream is to you waking, the more easy it is to remember details.
The weird thing is, my dream looks really disturbing, and to an extent i was concerned while I was in it, but my major state of being was resignation. That's the other weird thing about dreams, the emotions you have in them often don't seem remotely related to the real-life implications of the dream events... ie you feel sad when something quite positive happens.
p.s cleanie what about this weather?!?!
//i just dream about my ...
//i just dream about my thesis
heheh. Somewhat geekily, the recurring dream I have most often involves research as well. Unfortunately, mostly of a statistical nature. They're a bit hard to explain. Sometimes I'm trapped in the (correlation/data) matrix. Othertimes, my analyses won't fit the data, like my nesting is somehow incomplete. The overarching content is a sense of numbers and dispair.

Dreaming occurs during REM sleep, and ...
Dreaming occurs during REM sleep, and in a typical sleep cycle you drift through Stages 1-4 as well as REM, and the REM sleep is usually nested in the middle of the other non-dreaming stages. Thus, to remember a dream you need to wake directly from REM sleep. This usually occurs because you've been woken by something, although if you're tired/have been drinking, you're also more likely to have a lot of REM sleep, increasing the chance that you'll wake from it. Incidentally, true nightmares are not dreams (they're more like a contentless dread, and don't occur in REM sleep)(although if you believe wikipedia then there are nightmares and night terrors, whereas I'd call them bad dreams(REM) and nightmares (Sleep 4), respectively).

//so the moral of the story is don't read into dreams because they don't make sense.
the end.
That is only because you are not reading too much into them, I once had a dream where I was handcuffed and being taken away by police and I couldnt get away, the interpretation was that my creativity was being repressed and I couldn't get it out and I was being held against my will.
My creativity isnt getting out in my current job because it is pretty easy to do and doesn't take much thought and being a younger member I don't always get recognized for my ideas etc.
I would be overseas if I had the money but the lack of funds is holding me back AGAINST my will.
So dreams can have subconscious meanings, you just have to sift through the other meaningless bullshit to find the good stuff.

I am quite interested as to your thoughts on my dream. P.S I have no issues with my Dad, French people, octopodes or miscarriages.
//my major state of being was ...
//my major state of being was resignatio
your description really clicked with me - especially the above - dream apparently completely illogical and graphic and completely odd, but no feeling of fear or disgust - just resignation - that really summed up a lot of my dreams and how i felt during them at the time. glad to know it's just me.
as for weather, as limegreen says. i remember spending year ends and semester ends just hanging out on my flatmate's bed in the sun with 'Blow' Straightjacket Fits up super loud - and that would be my study. because it was sunny and what else could you do? i really pity those poor suckers in the central library at the moment - sitting in the sun in those easy chairs - 90% of them are asleep getting sunburnt, and the rest of the people studying in the library are staring out the windows, wishing they were outside. Dunedin's big practical joke at the end of the year.

//I was stranded without a ride. To ...
//I was stranded without a ride.
To dream that you are stranded, represents your feelings of isolation and loneliness. You are seeking for someone to help and rescue you from your situation.
//I started hitchiking back to the city.
To dream that you are hitchhiking, suggests that that you have not earned or deserved to be where you are at . The dream may also be a metaphor that you are getting a free ride.
//I was in the bath
To dream that you are taking a bath, signifies a cleansing of your outer and inner self and a washing away of difficult times. This dream may also be symbolic of ridding yourself of old ideas, notions, opinions, and other negativities. Your dream may be pointing toward forgiveness and letting go.
//had died skydiving.
To dream that you are skydiving, represents your high ideals. Sometimes you may need to compromise these ideals and be more realistic of your expectations.
Im not sure what it means when someone else is skydiving…maybe you have high ideals about someone else?
So me, Dad and the Frenchman took another mate on a skydive in honour of our dearly departed friend.
Although you did skydive so maybe the high ideals thing works.
To see your father in your dream, symbolizes authority and protection. It suggests that you need to be more self-reliant. Consider also your waking relationship with your father.
//so I went out to the barn.
To see a barn in your dream, signifies feelings kept in your unconscious. There is a possibility that you may be holding back your instinctual action or natural urges.
// Suddenly mercenaries with police uniforms arrived.
To see the police in your dream, indicates some failure to perform or to honor obligations and commitments. The police also symbolize structure, rules, and control. A more direct interpretation of seeing the police in your dream forewarns that you should avoid reckless behavior.
To dream that you are arrested by the police, suggests that you feel sexually or emotionally restrained because of guilt.
To dream that you are a police officer, represents your own sense of morality and conscience. The dream may serve to guide you down a straight path. If you have recurring dreams that you are a police officer, then it may mean that your past actions have left you feeling guilty. Consider your behavior/actions as the cop.
To dream that you are having difficulties contacting the police, suggests that you have yet to acknowledge your own authoritativeness in a situation. You need to take control and be in command of the direction of your life
//started torturing us by doing stuff like pulling our hair.
To dream that you are losing your hair, denotes that you are concerned with the notion that you are getting older and losing your sex appeal/virility. You are preoccupied with aging and your appearance. Losing you hair also signify a lack of strength and that you do not possess the power to succeed in an undertaking. You may be feeling weak and vulnerable.
To dream that you are being tortured, indicates that you are feeling victimized or helpless in some relationship or situation. Alternatively, you may be exhibiting some sadomasochistic desires.
//So I said a drink of water
To see water in your dream, symbolizes your unconscious and your emotional state of mind. Water is the living essence of the psyche and the flow of life energy. It is also symbolic of spirituality, knowledge, healing and refreshment. If the water is calm, clear, then it signifies that you are in tune with your spirituality. It denotes serenity, peace of mind, and rejuvenation. If you are splashed by water, then it represents your need to be revitalized and more expressive
//paper cup that was totally broken.
To see a broken cup in your dream, denotes feelings of powerlessness, guilt and/or low self-esteem. Perhaps you feel unqualified or inadequate in dealing with a situation
//I was suddenly Kate Winslet and it was just like this movie where they graphically showed her having an abortion
To dream that you have an abortion, suggests that you are hindering and blocking your own growth. You may be hesitant in pursuing a new direction in your life. The dream may also be a reflection of your own real-life abortion. And thus serve as a way of healing from the trauma and working towards self-acceptance.
This dream may also be a message for you to take care and look after your health.
//Turns out it was an octopus.
To see an octopus in your dream, signifies that you are entangled in some difficult matter or situation. Or it may mean that you are overly possessive and too clingy in a relationship.
some guy called Nacho Lost, who was bald, mustached and totally dressed like Magnum P.I called in his mates and had a gunfight with the mercenaries to save me. This part of the dream repeated three or four times, and each time I would have a conversation with one of his mates about whether Lost was his last name, or whether he has lost his last name.
To dream that you are lost, suggests that you have lost your direction in life or that you have lost sight of your goals. You may be feeling worried and insecure about the path you are taking in life. Alternatively, you may be trying to adjust and get accustomed to a new situation in which the rules and conditions are ever changing.
To dream that someone else is lost, represents unresolved issues or feelings regarding the person that is lost. Consider also what aspect of that person you may have lost within your own self. Perhaps you need to recapture and re-acknowledge those aspects.
That’s all I can really find from your dream, no doubt there is a shit load more stuff involved because that was pretty descriptive, and it is actual amazing that you remembered that much from a dream.

I have movie type recurring dreams too, ...
I have movie type recurring dreams too, often switching between being a part of the action and being in a room with other people watching and commenting.
Generally these dreams involve some sort of violence, and often there's this running theme of "man, I hate this kind of movie, I wish I wasn't watching it". The violence when it actually comes normally makes no sense, it's like we forgot the props .. i.e. our weapons .. and are just swiping and swatting away or pointing and going "pow pow"... or falling down when appropriate, etc. Often the scenario is some kind of seige. The actors are holed up in some building knowing bad stuff is coming.
Another theme or event or something which has cropped up over and over since I was a teenager is hearing a piece of music and it's not at all like I remember it. Generally these dreams are really distressing, but sometimes it's exciting, like "omg what is this extra rad version of this tune?"
The first of those dreams I remember was one of those ones where you think you've already woken up. So I was in the kitchen sorting out my lunch for school and had the little tape deck in the kitchen on. It was playing 'Harold & Joe' by the Cure and I was thinking "fuck I love this song". When the vocals should've come in there was this high pitched backwards shrieking (think the kind of thing you'd hear in the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks). I woke up with a big fright.
Actually, that crosses over nicely into the last recurring theme I can think of. Most of my nightmares involve being in the middle of doing mundane things when something that makes no sense suddenly happens. Most recent one I'm cleaning around the house, there's a knock at the door. I go to answer it and there's no one there. This woman with pure white eyes steps into the doorway from one side and makes a quiet mumbly noise while sliding (not walking) towards me down the corridor. I intuitively know she can't be stopped.
My main recurring dream is of flying. ...
My main recurring dream is of flying. Usualy I can just leap off the ground and hold my arms out wide, but it is difficult to maintain altitude. I have to really concentrate hard to go up and I often loose speed and height. I sort of end up swooping as I catch myself falling to fly up again. More often than not I am flying over trees and green fields and I have to really struggle to clear the trees or powerlines.
It's really good fun to fly!
The other recurring themes I have is fighting people - often to save members of my family. Somtimes I am awsome and I really beat the crap out of my oponent - puching and kicking, sometimes I am awsome but it seems to have little effect, though if I concentrate on them getting hurt I can sometimes turn the battle around. Sometimes my punches have no strength at all.
I suppose wet dreams are another aspect nobody seems to talk about. I've only had 3 that I can remember. In each case I was dreaming that I was in a situation where I badly needed to pee, like I am running late for a lecture. The preasure builds and builds until I can't hold it anymore and let go thinking I have just pissed myself, but instead I wake up in the middle of an orgasim.
//My main recurring dream is of flying. ...
//My main recurring dream is of flying.
Flying dreams fall under a category of dreams where you become aware that you are dreaming, known as lucid dreaming. Many dreamers have described the ability to fly in their dreams as an exhilarating, joyful, and liberating experience.
If you are flying with ease and enjoying the scene and landscape below, then it suggests that you are on top of a situation. You have risen above something. It may also mean that you have gained a different perspective on things. Flying dreams and the ability to control your flight is representative of your own personal sense of power.
Having difficulties staying in flight indicates a lack of power in controlling your own circumstances. You may be struggling to stay aloft and stay on course. Things like power lines, trees, or mountains may further obstruct your flight. These barriers represent a particular obstacle or person who is standing in your way in your waking life. You need to identify who or what is hindering you from moving forward.
If you are feeling fear when you are flying or that you feel that you are flying too high, then it suggests that you are afraid of challenges and of success.
In reality, we do not have the ability to fly. Thus such dreams may represent that which is beyond our physical limitations. In your mind, you can be anybody and do anything. Another way of interpreting flying dreams is that these dreams symbolize your strong mind and will. You feel undefeatable and nobody can tell you what you cannot do and accomplish. Undoubtedly these dreams leave you a great sense of freedom.
//The other recurring themes I have is fighting people - often to save members of my family.
To dream that you participate in a fight, indicates inner turmoil. Some aspect of yourself is in conflict with another aspect of yourself. Perhaps an unresolved or unacknowledged part is fighting for its right to be heard. It may also parallel a fight or struggle that you are going through in your waking life.
To see others fighting in your dream, suggests that you are unwilling to acknowledge your own problems and turmoil. You are not taking any responsibility or initiative in trying to resolve issues in your waking life.
To dream that you are fighting to the death, indicates that you are unwilling to acknowledge a waking conflict or your own inner turmoil. You are unwilling and refusing to change your old attitudes and habits.
To dream that you are punching someone or something, represents hidden anger and aggression. It may also be a symbol of power and your ability to draw strength from within yourself.
To dream that you are unable to throw a punch, indicates that you are feeling helpless. You may have self-esteem and confidence issues.

Inner turmoil is pretty accurate me being transgendered in all. Some therapists that work with transgendered people do a bit of dream interpretation, to look at the direction your mind is taking you. For example, do you always dream of yourself as a woman?

Falling dreams are another theme that ...
Falling dreams are another theme that is quite common in the world of dreams. Contrary to a popular myth, you will not actually die if you do not wake up before your hit the ground during a fall.
As with most common dream themes, falling is an indication of insecurities, instabilities, and anxieties. You are feeling overwhelmed and out of control in some situation in your waking life. This may reflect the way you feel in your relationship or in your work environment. You have lost your foothold and can not hang on or keep up with the hustle and bustle of daily life. When you fall, there is nothing that you can hold on to. You more or less are forced toward this downward motion without any control. This lost of control may parallel a waking situation in your life.
Falling dreams also often reflect a sense of failure or inferiority in some circumstance or situation. It may be the fear of failing in your job/school, loss of status, or failure in love. You feel shameful and lack a sense of pride. You are unable to keep up with the status quo or that you don't measure up.
According to Freudian theory, dreams of falling indicate that you are contemplating giving into a sexual urge or impulse. You maybe lacking indiscretion.
Falling dreams typically occur during the first stage of sleep. Dreams in this stage are often accompanied by muscle spasms of the arms, legs, and the whole body. These sudden contractions, also known as myclonic jerks. Sometimes when we have these falling dreams, we feel our whole body jerk or twitch and we awaken from this jerk. It is thought that this jerking action is part of an arousal mechanism that allows the sleeper to awaken and become quickly alert and responsive to possible threats in the environment.
According to biblical interpretations, dreams about falling have a negative overtone and suggest that man is acting and walking according to his own way of thinking and not those of the Lord

Falling dreams are great. I always wake up with a bump as I hit the ground - its as if I had been hovering above my bed whilst dreaming, kind of like the guy in the Lost Boys that finds himself awake on the ceiling of his room.
