WELLINGTON MUSIC WEEK: 21-27 November 2005

Background
Wellington Music Week celebrates the diversity, quality and success of Music in the Capital City. The 3rd Wellington Music Week is 21-27 November 2005 and will include the popular Music Seminar Series, Showcase Wellington and other events which each aim to develop greater capability, connectivity and opportunity within the local music industry for musicians and music businesses.

Held over two nights at Bodega, there will be opportunities to see and experience local music (live, recorded and video) during an evening of hospitality, entertainment and networking.

Thursday: “The Business End” - An exciting programme of new and breaking Wellington Music together with a small complementary Trade Showcase that will provide an opportunity to promote of Wellington music businesses.

Friday: “The package Birthday Party” - A special celebration of Wellington’s music and creative industries which are promoted every week in The package entertainment guide - an icon of Wellington’s thriving creative culture and which will be seven years old this year!

Music Seminar Series
The Music Seminar Series is members of the music and film industries to come together. A small number of brief presentations will also be given regarding significant local developments.

Forums: NZ Music,

Sorry about the double-post. I am using Blains dial-up internet and am not used to the slow speed of it!
Hopefully NZMUSIC.COM delete the other one.

Have a good night,

Tane

I joined up at MySace last Sunday. It is quite fun!

I want to take a band to Australia next year fro three months and expect to host several Australian bands.

I also want to host some Canadian bands and travel to Canada with a band next Christmas.

Feel free to visit my MySpace:

//Right. So are they actually playing or what?
//Maybe its just me, but if I see a band announced on a lineup I expect them to be playing

I'd say its just you that missed Tane's point - or maybe you didn't miss it at all... maybe you're just sh1t stirring.

I think his point is pretty obvious. that is: at this stage, CAsh are playing, hence been announced in the lineup, but if for some reason they can't, the other mentioned act will play in their place... Rocket science!

I am very pleased to be able to announce the programme for Showcase Wellington by the end of the week. Thank you for your patience.

As well as the Seminars and shows at Bodega there will be Wellington music in the street at Cabaret, Motel, Indigo, Valve, Sub Nine, Finc, Concrete, Tupelo, Curve Bar, The Cross Bar and many other venues.

Thank you for your support and encouragement.

Tane

So Charlie Ash are in fact playing the Friday night? I heard that they weren't?

......sorry I meant Friday

Arghh... Thursday.

Sorry..... I don't do mornings....

If Charlie Ash can't make it to the showcase I will be able to put Wellingtons newest hot property into the line-up. Ginger Brown are the Hammond organ and percussion duo that have been very popular supporting Connan and the Mockasins in Wellington and Auckland as well as doing a South Island tour with Autumn Stone.

Right. So are they actually playing or what?

Maybe its just me, but if I see a band announced on a lineup I expect them to be playing

I think Steph has a point. I'd go to a gig because I wanted to see Charlie ASH. If there's a chance I wasn't going to see Charlie ASH I'd really like to know before I turned up. It's a bit weird that the only reason anyone has prior warning of the possibility (which is apparently probable enough to already arrange a back-up act) is because someone asked the organiser about it on a public forum, after he'd advertised the lineup. Way to go...

fair point... but theres always a reason behind situations like this... Perhaps that is the question that should be asked.

Lineups often change though, especially when they're advertised early. I'm sure that on the day of the gig, you will know whether or not CAsh are playing

I don't think I missed Tane's point at all.

Maybe I am shit stirring, but using a bands name to get people along to a show that they probably aren't even playing, really sucks.

But Mon Ami you have a point. Tane would you like to explain why Charlie Ash may not be playing the showcase?

I do not want Charlie Ash or myself to be seen in a poor light. As stated above by Mon Ami line-ups do change even in the most professioanl shows and even international tours can change with little notice. I can say that when I printed the posters and when I posted the above information that all of the details were based on the very latest information.

The showcase has stunning business support. What is very interesting to hear from the many screen company musical directors, programmers and selectors is that they will not be influenced by the names of bands playing but want reassurance that there will be a broad variety of quality acts that preferably have broadcast quality recording available or are prepared to make them for soundtracks, commissions and functions.

A wide range of negotiations are still taking place and it is not fair to paint bands in a poor light in a public forum where there are still sponsorship negotiations going on to secure more wonderful opportunities for Wellington artsists by Wellington businesses.

Showcase Wellington is not about making enormous amounts of money, it is about sharing resources equitably and making introductions between creative businesses and creative organisations enabling efficiencies that will in the long term offer more opportunities to usinesses and organisations to create more quality products, resources and relationships.

Put simply some of the efficiency opportunities include reduced travel time by sourcing what can be created in Wellington instead of from Auckland or internatioanlly; reduced administrative costs due to local business calls instead of toll calls etc etc.

In short Showcase Wellington has a number of ambitious but achievable goals which can be met with the support of artists, creative businesses and creative organisations.

From the showcase some of the most significant benefits for artists include:

* National publicity for bands through television, radio and print media including interviews and photo opportunities.

* Music video sponsorship for up to three bands this year

* A range of business sponsorships for up to five bands made this year

* Introductions with a range of venue owners, recording labels, event managers, conference and festival organisers, national tour promoters and international tour promoters.

Benefits from the showcase for the local music industry include:

* Regrowing support from the general public that there is quality New Zealand music that is worth supporting even from emerging artists.

* Confidence that there is a strong future in the creative industries and that a wide range of income streams are available when effieciencies are created using local knowledge, resource and talent.

* Raising the bar setting new levels of expectation with top quality acts (known or unknown, established or new) performing in this type of event at least annually.

just answer the question buddy ;)

Thank you to all of the sponsors and organisations that have committed resources and assitance to Showcase Wellington so far. Without industry support it would be impossible to present such a show.

I am sorry that I could not place all of the bands into the programme. With more than 40 acts that I could not place into a two night programme I am trying to create additional shows for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at a variety of traditional and less convential venues including organisation and sposnsor functions.

Thank you to:

Inca, Flying Saucer, Drum Connexions, MENZA, Chamber Music New Zealand, Real Groovy, Phantom Bill Stickers, The Package, Radio Active, Sticky Pictures, Amstore, Protel, Midi, Wellington City Council, Bar Bodega, Tuatara Brewery, David Greer Music, Amplifier.co.nz.

Hello Blink,

I do not know confidently that I know differently to what I have printed above - I will find out tomorrow! As I said the next band on the list is ready to fill the slot if one becomes available. They hope that there is a slot.

//Thank you to:

I really have to admire your game. After a few weeks of having not-quite-commercial advertising of your own removed from the forums, you're using nzm to advertise your commercial sponsors?

I heard Wai and Goldenhorse are giving a free performace in the Civic Square at 5.45pm today to kick off this year's Wellington - International Arts Festival.

Presented in association with Smalltime Records.....................
