finally my jihad against Kazaa is coming to an end with a victory in site, No More hidden trojans or illicit and malicious programs to be "forciby" installed on your PC. Long live Victory.
who even uses Kazaa any more? as the article points out...
According to Nielsen/NetRatings, Australian use of Kazaa fell 39 per cent between September 2004 and July 2005, while use of peer-to-peer network LimeWire grew 824 per cent and use of Apple's iTunes grew 533 per cent. "The shift is towards services like iTunes," said the research firm's Andrew Eckford. "Kazaa, even at its peak, wasn't seeing the numbers Limewire is [seeing] now.
And Bittorrent kicks all other P2P software's arse, in my opinion.
Noizy i was trying to sus out bittorrent the other night, but got stuck.
Couple of questions if you can be arsed, or point me to some easy reading, that would be cool.
Can you recommend a good client (for dummies) and some torrent search engines or communitys? Is it better to try to join a community? Most the common searches i've tried (isohunt) etc. either return torrents that are inaccessable or password protected and if i do get them to start they max out at about 10kbs
My understanding is that too get it to work properly i need to open ports 6881-688* on the modem, which i have done. (BTW i've got one of those standard dlink 302g beasts from telecom. i've managed to config it correctly for soulseek) Also, from what i have read, i have to then make sure the firewall allows the client and ports to be open? Is there anything else?
depends on your requirements. for, err, more adult-orientated material, yes. If it's just tv/movies/music/apps, you can probably get away with the bigger bittorrent sites (mininova, torrentreactor).
Yeah, not too sure about firewall/port configuration issues - I've never struck a problem with anything along those lines. Give ABC a go, and see how you get on.
oh err. i didn't realise that 20kbs was quite average, for some reason i thought bit torrent went alot faster. one of my peers appeared to be d/l at about 170kbs. silly me huh!
i've only ever used limewire and soulseek for audio, both which have returned about the same 20kbs averages, this was my first blind attempt at video. conclusion - a 700mb file is going to take forever to d/l however you do it eh. thanks for the help man.
// oh err. i didn't realise that 20kbs was quite average
well, that's just me, on a crappy jetstart connection. it does get up to 30kbs if things are ripping along, and faster than that if I happen to connect to someone in NZ (50-60kbps), but, generally, those speeds are about the best I hope for.
If I was paying serious money for a decent broadband connection, though, I'd be hoping for more.
// conclusion - a 700mb file is going to take forever to d/l however you do it eh
yup. Can't say I download a lot of video beyond half hour shows (daily show, league of gentlemen). nothing like setting up a couple of downloads to run overnight, through the next day, and when you get home from work ... ready to go ...
it's funny how things on the internet develop and change almost instantly, but things involving the courts work on a timeline of months, even years... this case has missed the boat totally, most people have moved from kazaa onto other services, perhaps a review of court systems is more necessary than a review of online piracy....

how about 'for, err, more adult-orientated material'?
thanks for the tips noizyboy...
ahh i just don't get it there are too many variables with bittorrent, i tried with ABC, but still the fastest speed i can get is 20kbs.
// but still the fastest speed i can get is 20kbs.
that's not bad, I reckon - probably about the average I can get it running at, anyway. Did you get better speeds out of other p2p software?

I liked Kazaa =(.
Oh wait. It does not say they are out, just they have to stop the illegil music stuff. I can still download heaps of porn!
