Couldn't believe it but the best band on the night from takapuna "The electric confectionaires" (sp?) actually took away a well deserved win over the much more predictable, very rockquest friendly "Midnight Youth"...who I am positive you'll be hearing on a radio very soon anyway.
Kinda gutted cause of the old double edged sword of winning the rockquest... but the sword couldn't be dangling over a more deserving band right now.
reasonably impressed with the talent of this years quest. some pretty honed bands out there. Still heaps of rock/pop dribble, but basically all the bands still showed up Evermore.

the electric confectionaries were easily the best band, so so good. I know what you mean about the midnight youth eh, but never the less they pulled it off alright.

As for Evermore... i had to crouch into a little ball with my fingers in my ears and try to sleep through it. There isn't a more boring band in the land and the keyboardist's right shoulder made me want to shake him. I couldn't watch. Or listen. I'm glad to let the Aussies claim this one. I mean power ballads are all well and good, but even Bryan Adams didn't make whole albums of them. Surely.

I wonder if everybody would be slagging them off if they were competing in the RQ, rather than playing it as former winners who have gone on to enjoy some success overseas. I'm not a fan - yes you can sing high, really high, but that doesn't mean you SHOULD....but personally I think their music is not without it's merits.
I REALLY don't want to say it....but .... this smacks of the dreaded Tall Poppy Syndrome. Those guys are what, 20, 21? I'd say we're going to see some amazing stuff from them in the future.

Don't get me wrong, I loved The Electric Confectionaires - they are a deserving band for the 1st place crown, but THE were definatly more impressive than the 2nd and 3rd placings. I can respect that The Midnight Youth were a group of talented musicians (despite the fact that their 3-4 song set all seemed to sound like one long chorus of Emo) but looking at things from an overall performance and music perspective I honestly can’t understand how they were over looked…
Is it because judges view The Henderson Experience as not necessary in need of the SFRQ to record an single/E.P? The same could be asked of say, Rival State...

I think Hendersons trouble was that they went a bit overboard with the stage antics and got a wee bit loose and sloppy as a result. no offense to the boys who obviously worked really hard... but when playing at the town hall through a giant PA like that, its sometimes better to focus on getting the song nailed as opposed to throwing the guitars around your neck etc.. Where I actually liked the fact they were a wee bit chaotic leading to some bung notes and looseness... this is not what the judges want to see.

You're totally right, we realised it was possibly a bad choice the second we started doing it, but we felt like alot of the people in the crowd knew our songs and so we could afford some sloppyness in place of a same old same old show. Rockquest gave us some good as shows to play at and we're greatful as, but i have a problem with turning up to a show to compete with the bands you're playing with. The only thing you should be competing for is the audience's attention.
You owe it to them, they payed 20 bucks

He looks nothing like the two you just mentioned. Why are you all nit-picking on this band? They obviously have a fuckload of talent for such young guys. Why won't people just accept the fact that a band can do well for themselves. Sure, I fucking HATE hip-hop and all that gangster shit coming out of New Zealand these days, but good on them for getting to international level.

geez, talk about getting your knickers in a twist. It's probably a belssing that Midnight Youth came second, they'll probably do a lot more with it. Remember The Checks came second last year, and to be honest, I don't even remeber who came first last year (sorry if that band suddenly appears on this topic - but I don't!)
I was rully rully impressed with the talent there, Midnight Youth included, and the bands seemed to be way beyond their years in terms of confidence, and song writing and performance. I thought the whole thing was going to be like a painful high school hall lunchtime gig (and the town hall was lit up like a form two social), but actually really enjoyed it. It makes me optimistic about the future on NZ music.

I've always said that second place in the RQ is the best place to be. You still score some shit, but nobody remembers you as RQ winners. Its little consolation to the bands at the time, but in the long run its better careerwise.

I enjoyed the Midnight Youths performance, the only band that put on a show better than thiers was The Electric Confectionaires. A well deserved win. And since the final i have had the midnight youths song in my head, such a catchy chorus. I dig them.

midnight youth are the fucking shit!!!!! been in skool with them since ages ago and they have came so fucking far, from busking at the sunday market... not for getting Jaisi and the boys.. their performance was amazing they deserved to win. 4 part harmonys where fucking mean and the only mistake they made was when Jaisi's E was in some other random tuning - he soon got that sorted tho...
over all it was a great night, evermore really impressed me, it wasnt the right crowd for them tho...most of the kids were 14 year old girls waiting out for Rival State!!! not ever hearing good musicians playing decent music before (not saying rival state arent - look at Sal-V getting the Mainz award) i rekon they are really talented band and will go far!!!!!!
