Hurricane Kat

Clearly idle comments from the other side of the world are of no help or comfort at a time such as this, but frankly this must surely be the clearest indication yet of the utter decay of the much hyped American Dream.

Set up Apologists, I'd really like to hear an explanation for the shoddy shambles masquerading as a "relief effort".

Pertinent issues to me are;
Just how quickly did Armed Soliders get in too Guard the Banks
Life, Liberty, and Property should be amended to just Property
Its all very well blaming "Gangs of Armed Looters" but who let every one be armed, and what the fuck would you do if you got no Water and Food, and the Powers that be dont seem in to much of a hurry to do jack about it?
It was 5 days ago right?
Latest guess work has Death Toll @10000, yet theres no indication of who actually died in the storm and who passed away at a later date.
Expect many Law-Suits, particulary re: maintaince of lake Levees.

If any good comes out of this it will be a popular uprising by the Working Class, a just reward for any Government who so clearly dont care a whit for the poorer sections of their constituency.

I take no blame for inaccuries in this rant, I have been watching CNN and Sky News.

I'm excited that Kanye's new album is all co-produced by Jon Brion. Among other things he did the soundtracks for Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, plus produced that Fiona Apple album that never got released which people on here have got excited about... Seems like an exciting / crazy combo.

I dotn see the point in naming Hurricanes with human names, generally a Hurricane causes alot of shit right?

So instead of Hurricane Katrina why not call it "Hurricane Your fucked" or something like that. I mean that is a better description of the impending terror and destruction that is on its way.

In light of the recent tragedy I feel awful about finding that comment very very funny.

Oh dear. I laughed so hard. Hurricane your fucked that's gold. I feel terrible.

Although in America it's more like Hurricane: Poor Fucked.

What is with the raping and murdering? I can't understand it. Surely it wouldn't happen in NZ if we had a similar disaster. Maybe some fighting over food and whatnot, but New Orleans has descended into total insanity. Really liked the "finding food" and "looting" comments one news agency attached to two photos, one of white people and one of black people. You can guess which was which.

and why does it always seems to be a female name??

//female name

I remember hearing that to name cyclones/hurricanes the powers that be go through the alphabet, first male names, then female.

Oh, here's a bit about it. They alternate male/female as they go through the alphabet.

haha well lets be honest, it would sum up the tragedy / violent act of nature just a tad bit better than Katrina does

If only it had been one down, it would have been "Hurricane Jose" -that'd be a great stage name for a mexican wrestler.

Nice tidbit from wikipedia:

The modern method of ascribing people's names to storms was introduced by Clement Wragge, an Anglo-Australian meteorologist at the end of the 19th century. As well as feminine names, he also used the names of politicians who had offended him.

//any more than the usual (link)?

the Mayor of New Orleans was saying that he thinks much of the violence came down to junkies not being able to get their fix - a few people just went totally mental, because in ordinary circumstances society would still be working and the fix would be around the corner. + the fact that usually non-junkie other people were put into an extreme situation, no food, no property, no electricity, opportunists ... but yeah, interesting that it's been blown out of proportion, especially in comparison to murder rates from previous years.

in NZ it's drilled into us from a young age that we live on a ring of fire, the biggest area of volcanic seismic activity, and that the big 'un could strike at any moment. all of us know someone who is in Civil Defence or was in Civil Defence. we know about the Napier earthquake, the big Murchison 8 pointer, and we have active volcanoes scattered across our islands, the capital city's on a major faultline and our biggest city sits on a big patch of earth-acne. people got justifiably pissy when help came late in the floods last year (it was last year, eh?) i think NZ is pretty good at such end-game nature bites back logistics.

it didn't even seem to be a matter of scale regarding the south coast in the US - help just didn't even trickle in. many local police walked off the job, but help from outside (into an area that was often totally cut off) didn't seem to start arriving until at least 4 or 5 days after the hurricane had moved on.

I'm just picking up on this attempted link between natural disasters and the disintegration of law & order, like there aren't more tangible, real-life reasons why New Orleans has/continues to have horrendous crime problems....

so "Hurricane Bush you're fucked"?

//What is with the raping and murdering? I can't understand it. Surely it wouldn't happen in NZ if we had a similar disaster.

But we have had 'similar' disasters- earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, cyclones. I reckon kiwis handle these things pretty well.

Having said that, I genuinely think the US media is WAY over-representing a few random acts of violence & anarchy. I mean, has it been any more than the usual (link)?

US Government is only interested in fighting stupid wars in other countrys, but not helping their own people when they're in need. What a great country, NOT!! They're meant to be the richest country in world right??

I find it amusing that all the people being interviwed, that are complaining about having no water, and no food are usually sucking on cigarettes in the process.

yes ! I also noted that a couple of times

If I was a smoker, I would carry cigarettes in my handbag. I would not leave my house without my handbag. I would not, however, carry food and water and medicine in my handbag on a daily basis.

Well its like people who are living in poverty and cant afford to put food on the table but can afford alcohol, drugs and smokes to feed their habbit.

Or people who live in a shit box house but have 9 cars sitting in the front yard, all be it collective pieces of shit but still 9 cars is alot of cars.

Tell you what, if I was having to live in the conditions that those people in New Orleans are enduring, I'd probably start smoking too - and hope that I could loot some liquor to try and make it all go away too.

//I would not, however, carry food and water and medicine in my handbag on a daily basis.
but you would if you had been told to evacuate?

This whole thing should have us checking our evac kits!

The Award to most ungrateful bastards(for lack of better words) go to... drum roll

Those Kiwi tourists who on the news were so sad that and I quote " have lost everything we had lost our suitcases we have been living out of for 5 weeks its all gone all we have left is a pair of nickers" meanwhile tears were flowing down the face... Ummm excuse me lady you aint lost shit, considering most people have lost their entire house Id consider myself lucky if I were you.

Bear in mind though, they're thousands of miles from home, don't know anyone, and they've just lost everything that was familiar to them, as well as having to deal with the sudden carnage that surrounds them. I doubt they're ignoring the people that have lost all their worldly possessions, probably it's not sadness they're expressing, but fear. I know if I was in that situation, I'd be petrified out of my skull.

Plus they were just wee girls.

Is it just me or does it seem from interviews and photos that there is WAY more black people still stuck in the city, and hardly any whites? Those kiwi girls got a ride out on a medical bus or something...can't help but wonder if, had they been black, they'd have experienced the same "miracle".

Oh yeah I just found it funny how these kiwis were going on about how they have lost everything, when they havent lost a god damm thing when you put it into perspective.

but yeah given that they were scared and all, and the way things are pretty lucky to get out alive.

correlating travel itineraries with weather forecasts mightent have been a bad idea in retrospect.

//Plus they were just wee girls.

Na not those girls, these people were like late 40s early 50s people, it was insane, they had armed police escorts and travelling in a car where the police man driving had his gun in one hand and the steering wheel in the other, scary shit man

All it takes is a natural disaster for people to resort animal behaviour

Has anyone heard that saying "any civilisation is only three meals away from revolution?" - that and everyone having guns anyway is a great combination.

I am so full of love for the mayor of New Orleans right now:

external link ]

// I need 500 buses, man.

err, did you check to see if there were any free school buses, mayor?

no? oh. perhaps you should've.

external link ]

Ooooooooooooh burn.

yeah, slight oversight on someone's behalf.

so if they used the buses before the hurricane:

1. where would the buses take people?
2. who is responsible for setting up the facilities to for the evacuees in those places?
3. who coordinates who gets to go on a bus?

it's a trainwreck people, don't feed the trolls joanna.

I think I'd be pretty succulent, actually.

It's because a lot of those still stuck thereand poor and black, and the Bush administration does not give a shit about poor black people, as waste of money rescueing them, it's cheaper to just clean up the bodies later on. Bush actually smirked while saying how he 'understood' how people felt with the lack of progress. Smiling, 10000 people dead and he smiles.

I don't think you can read anything into that trademark Bush smirk anymore. He does it whenever he's in public, sorta like a deer in the headlights but instead of thinking "holy crap what's that light?" he's thinking "holy crap, I'm the president!"

don't feed the troll rdor.

//Smiling, 10000 people dead and he smiles.

we should " smoke em out", thatll get them out of there, Bush is a war president dont forget...but apparently hes not so great when he comes up against things you cant blow up.

// but apparently hes not so great when he comes up against things you cant blow up.

not that he wouldn't contemplated that as an option, as others have...

external link ]

...wouldn't have contemplated...

hey now come on, look at all the things Bush did - he even flew over New Orleans, and peered with concern out the window of airforce one -
and there's even a picture of him HUGGING a black person.
Anyone would think he was a nigger lover or something...

//// but apparently hes not so great when he comes up against things you cant blow up.

Holy shit that is one of the funniest things I've ever heard
"Dagnabbit, those pesky tornadoes are comin' again, Martha, go fetch me up my 10 megaton thermonuclear device.."

//[ www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/C5c.html ]
“During each hurricane season, there always appear suggestions that one should simply use nuclear weapons to try and destroy the storms”

What . . . who the fuck would ever suggest that . . .I mean really????
**bangs head on desk in disbelief at peoples stupidity**

If George Bush on Quaaludes or something? He can send the National Guard to "restore order" in war-torn Iraq but he cant send them to keep the peace in New Orleans after a hurricane. Gerrof the ludes Dubya and also quit the barbs as well - your people need you more than people 10,000km away.

//He can send the National Guard to "restore order" in war-torn Iraq but he cant send them to keep the peace in New Orleans after a hurricane.

My cousin, who is a police officer, is being sent down there with a few other members of his precinct. It was done on a state level, and strictly voluntary, but at least something is being done. Through my job I talk to a lot of NYPD officers, and quite a number of them are going south, too. The local Red Cross here is sending volunteers, as is the Salvation Army. It's appalling that such slack is being left on a federal level, but at least it's being picked up elsewhere.

Regarding the New Orleans evacuees at Hoston’s Astrodome: “And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this — this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them.”

-- Barbara Bush

Nice one.

Well you know, they're all so dirty and stuff, the water's just in time for them to have a wash!
