Michael Hill Jeweller ad

I could be wrong, but is that really a Phoenix Foundation song they play on the new Michael Hill Jeweller ad?
Wow, I guess public opinion of NZ music really has changed.

Forums: NZ Music,

not quite...but lets not talk about it

Have not seen the ad.....but tell me they didn't appropriate the chords and melody to a large extent but changed it enough to get away with it, ala about a thousand bank of NZ ads?

no not that either... shall we talk about it??

I really think we should talk about it. I wanna open up the floor now. . .

I am intrigued

Ok someone smarter than me suggested that it might be because someone does something for a living that might result in some business having an ad that sounds like a Phoenix Foundation song, even though it's not, exactly. . .

nope. i don't think that person is smarter then anybody.

You'd have to admit that's a good theory. Considering the *foghorn* and whatnot. And with him doing *miaow!*. If it isn't that, then why does *nuclear explosion sound* prefer that we didn't talk about it?

nah..haha, i'm just saying that somebody who says "because someone does something for a living that might result in some business having an ad that sounds like a Phoenix Foundation song, even though it's not, exactly" ....... doesn't sound that smart.

To be honest, I can'twork out what you're trying to say, so i have no idea if you're right or not.

Something along the lines of:

Devil Rider: "It be a bit yuck to have mine on there coz my most played tracks according to itunes are stings that i have made for tv shows (like 5 second 'techno break' or 'man leaves guitar twang')"

?

Isn't there a margarine ad as well? Or, something...

Man, this is getting confusing!

just know that it has nothing to do with the phoenix foundation.... ads suck arse and are soul destroying pieces of shit that should be avoided at all costs. But if something that takes you four hours to write and record can pay the rent for for a few months and seriously help out in the gear department then so be it.

...and i reiterate; ads are the soul sucking work of the devil and all involved shall rot in hell for the rest of existence.

There's nothing wrong with making a living. And in my humble opinion, music adds ambience to all sorts of situations - if it gets you some dosh, all to the better. Plus which, isn't it okay to get your music out there to be heard? Often people hear music on ads and end up buying someone's CD because they like what they heard. Just my opinion, and I'm not a musician......

It's like an artist who works as a graphics designer to pay rent/buy art supplies/etc. No one would get that upset about that. Why should music be any different? I think it's a great idea.

i can't think of any instance when i'd buy a cd cause it was a great jingle for the new telecom campaign..

then you are goin straight to hell obviously.. i'll be the one on the flaming carpet, see you there.

I've paid more attention to a band because I've heard a really catchy song on an ad. And I'm pleased to announce that it never resulted in me buying a(*coff*nother) vodafone contract or more kentucky fried chicken. And I've never eaten a Muncho in my life.

I downloaded the Smoke City song from the Levi's ad with the mermaid.

and remember that Levi's ad back in about 91 and it was some band who blew up because of that ad, but the actual album was shite.. well my sister bought it... (I think it was her and not me..) what were they called? ha Stiltskin. Tig you wouldn't remember that... ;)

you can go to hell too!!

I admit to having bought a Jacknife Lee CD partly motivated by, er, the odd telesatan ad with the girl in the basement flat in london with the inkjet printer making a huge picture of rangitoto on the wall of her flat... while chatting to her mum on the phone who was milling round on somewhere like cheltenham beach...
... that the song was called 1970's Dictator Chic may also have swayed my decision....

OH! OH!! I've been wanting to know what that track was for bloody ages!!!
Thanks limegreen! Is the whole album like that?

Most jobs are soul crushing. Try creating debts for people over the age of 65 and you wont feel so dirty about writing ad jingles.

Marcus from Lucid 3 wrote and sang a tv jingle. ROCK!

I FINALLY GOT JACKNIFE LEE! Hooray, telecom ad!

Also, I can hear beck for sure, but another prevailing impression is mint royale, who I also like a lot.

//Is the whole album like that?

Sadly no. That's just the introduction to the song, although the vocal is really quite cool. I only *really* like a couple of the songs. The other fav that I can remember the name of is called Shush Dafty. The rest of it reminds me a lot of beck. Not to say that it's bad, just that it's not 'wow, what the fuck is that?'. That said, a good number of my friends have got copies since hearing it...

Interesting background as a punk-rocker, and for production work with snow patrol & u2...

Oh, well I like Beck so I guess it'll be worth checking out anyway.

//public opinion of NZ music really has changed

i usually feel uneasy about songs written for a certain purpose being used to push a product, but the Labour party ad (granny kicking rugby ball) uses 4 seconds of the opening track from Getaway, 'Stars'. wooooooooooooooooooo! money for the Clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so pleased.
