Audioscrobbler has updated their site, seemingly blended with the Last.fm part of things.
Anyways, things seem to be working better, so I reckon we get the NZMusic.com group happening more. With only 29 members so far, we are looking pretty shit low on the list of New Zealand groups. This is strange considering we are the big community of music fans in NZ!

You set up a user profile on the site, and download a plug-in for whatever media player you have on your pc. Then whenever you listen to music on your pc (including your CDs), it automatically lists the songs you're listening to on your profile.

I found myself flipping out when I first put the plugin on my player - checking stats, going "this isn't indicative of my tastes" and deliberately leaving things playing even when I was going out or didn't have the stereo on, to try and rectify things.

Mine always seems slightly imbalanced because I have a stereo in my office, which produces better sound than the speakers on my computer, but I'm still reasonably pleased with my top listened to artists.

The best thing about the new look is that yr top of the week lists more accurately reflect the true rank of a song. 3rd=, 5th= etc.

i'm worried about what my iTunes wants to play when i leave the office for a few minutes. it really seems to favour Louis Armstong. i'm ok with that ... but i wouldn't say he's one of my top artists. he's always just delivered La Vie En Rose when i get back to the desk.

bah. even if i could work out how to make it connect to Realplayer which is what i've always listened to when i've listened on my computer, it would be a pile of shite, cos the only reason i put CD's in my computer is to check the durations of tracks, and they're completely random CDs. And the only downloads would be music i'm trying to make my mind up about.

if you're interested, you'll have to get some sort of application like iTunes or something that lists your music like a library - you can add to it, categorise it, it's all very geeky and Hi Fidelity, but i've been listening to stuff that's physically buried deep within my CD collection - keeping them encoded as mp3s (or as m4a) on my computer has been grrrrreat. cos if i feel like listening to something, i don't curse the fact that the CDs at home - at some point i spent 3 minutes encoding the album onto my puter.
have a look at audioscrobbler's plugin page - that will give you a good idea of what music players people use on their computers ... it doesn't take much to get it all going, and it's actually geeky-fun deciding what tunes from what albums make the/your grade.

It be a bit yuck to have mine on there coz my most played tracks according to itunes are stings that i have made for tv shows (like 5 second 'techno break' or 'man leaves guitar twang') all with the artist listed as MY NAME! thus destroying the last thread on annonymity one might have on this sight.
But the most played track on my itunes is 'Never Give Your Heart Away' by Carltonand the Shoes, an absursly obscure lovers rock tune from Studio 1 circa 69-70 (i think) which ups my nerdy trainspotter cred no end!
