I saw a guy Herman Li he plays in a band called dragonforce,
self taught shredder, he recently won the "best new shredder" award presented by Zakk WYlde,
this guy is sooooo fast its incredible, he makes it look as if theres no strings on the guitar he hits them that fast, he is really good, too bad the music he makes sounds like bad Hair metal or glam rock
but my top 5 would be
Eric Clapton
Mark Knofler,
Kirk Hammet,
Joe Satriani,
Joe Walsh - that muther fucker can barely string a sentence together he is soo drug fucked be he is incredible on the axe.
They may not be the fastest, they may not be the ranked best guitarists in the world but I believe they are some of the greatest,
there are others like Hendrix but I not as into his music as I am the others so he doesnt make my top 5

Well after reading their latest press release'yesterday" it sounds like Robyn has fed them a whole bunch of bullshit making out like i set out to bad mouth them or something, which aint true, so i'd doubt they would want to gig with us now but who knows, maybe i should try and make contact. Oh well at least it prompted them to issue their first news release in nearly 2 years.

Portia/ Sam, I politely would ask of you too refrain from badgering Simon Ishtar at each opportunity.
If your not taken by his "thing" thats O.K., but please, your doing yourself a disservice by attempting to belittle his musical endevours.

Thank you Mr Foal
my opinion on top guitarists, you cannot narrow it down to five and any attempt to try and justify shredders as top of the list is only measuring digital dexterity. Look at the instrument globally and holistically the list would be hard to narrow down smaller than a few hundred guitarists.
on the other issue, Portia you fucking cock, follow link below

Honestly Simon what is your problem? I think I've given you shit about being a shred hero about three times or something. Admittedly I shouldn't have indulged on this thread and it was a little childish, but how can I resist when you threaten me with bodily harm? At least gatman, earnest and desperate to deflect any child porn/assault allegations though he may be, has a bit of a laugh about it. You totally FREAK OUT every time. Don't bother. This is the internet, big guy. Your mind is your only weapon. And having to go down that road ( to paraphrase, you said if I ever said anything else, (which I have) you would "smash the shit out of me") implies that your weapon is a little bit blunt. I'm pretty sure it isn't, judging from some of your posts (particularly the one on english teaching in non-english speaking countries, which I enjoyed immensely.
BUT I have to admit, I have given you a bit of a hard time, and Foal's right. Each to his own.

Mr. Ishtar, have you heard of a kiwi guitarist called Sean Clancy? i met him years back, haven't seen him since but hear the he is suppose to hold some world record for shredding.

1200 notes a minute, apparently. I saw him years ago at a rock festival, and he was shredding with one hand; like he took the strap off, held his guitar out to one side by the neck (with the one hand) and did fucken arpeggios.

I've met Sean a few times. Don't agree with his politics, he was one of those clowns who marched through Auckland with Brian Tamaki, but he is a very good guitarist. He was over in Poland for a long time doing rock operas and such but is now living somewhere in Ranui.
It'd be fun to jam with him, so far closest we've got to it is talking bullshit bout Yngwie and Eddie.

Surely you'd be too disgusted by his politics to want to give him the time of day, let alone sit down and jam with him?
Honestly I don't know. He was working ...
Honestly I don't know. He was working at Go West music for some time and I suppose I'd probably spoken with him half a dozen times. Went in one day and Brent from 8 foot Sativa was back behind the counter. I asked where the new guy was and Brent said he was marching with Tamaki. Up to that point I had thought him not too bad a guy, a little blinkered at times (he was having a good bitch at one of the other guys there one day for stringing a gothic flying v to drop A as "No one in the real world plays that shit") big ego but I'm guilty of egotism myself.....
Yeah you're right Portia, not pretty politics with Mr Clancy.
There's a guy working at Go West at the moment by the name of Chris Kirby, used to play in Defkt and now plays in a band called remains of a day, he'd be fun to jam with. Grant from Epitome is a very capable guitarist, the guys from These 4 walls and Battle Circus have some serious chops, Rob from Cerebral Vortex is by reputation one hell of a guitarist, I'd love to sit with a classical and some segovia transcriptions and jam with Andy from Remote.
NZ has plenty of great guitarists with far less dodgy politics. Yeah Portia I think you're right on this one.
Agreed. Gotta say I never really ...
Agreed. Gotta say I never really thought too hard bout Mr Clancy's convictions before. Come to think of it, it would be interesting to find out what the go west crew made of him. I'm told he hid all the progressive guitar books while he was there and spent a lot of time selling his own.

Ok really like the Sonic Youth inclusion, can live with Kevin Shields (I like his playing, but BEST of all time?...) but wait, Brian Molko of Placebo? Dude. He's about the most average guitarist in popular music. He pretty much sticks to power chords at all times and although Placebo have some good songs, technically speaking he's a toddler.

There's been a real focus on speedy ...
There's been a real focus on speedy playing, but these guys are my favourites for other stuff.
Billy Corgan, most underrated guitarist of the nineties, hands down. The mast of the Bigf Muff Pi's ridiculously over the top distortion/fuzz capabilities, and a true innovator. Used modes in popular rock without sounding lame, mainly mixolydian. Totally his own sound, which to me is so much more admirable than just being the fastest.
Dimebag Darrel of Pantera, metal solos that aren't so much widdly widdly but more like chunka chunka chunk. Awesome palm muting shredding, totally brutal riffage all round. The metal band its ok to like (sorta). Also, the metal band who favour shorts. Pretty much a one man marketing campaign for Digitech's whammy pedal.
James Hetfield
Maybe not the flashest lead player out, and certainly past his prime playing-wise (or idea wise anyway) but nobody gets metal chunk like Hetfield. My favourite metal rhythm player by far.
John Frusciante
Also not a speed freak at all, but check out his playing Blood Sugar Sex Magik, so much soul and taste in his note choices, such nice phrasing and again, very much his own man tonewise. His more recent playing is a step in a different direction but still he has that fat rounded Fender tone that only his hands seem to capture.
Neil Young
I can't say a single bad thing about Neil Young. The man. Great lyrics, great guitar tone, probably the most real rock star still alive right now. If anybody's in it for the music, it's the big N. We can forgive Canada for Alanis, Neil makes it ok.
I definitely agree with the Sonic Youth one too - shouldn't we as musicians celebrate innovation in guitar playing rather than just speed? There's a reason Vai, Satriani et al have never really "made it" while Corgan, Sonic youth, Neil Young, Chillis, Pantera and Metallica have. If we as guitarists all spent time honing our own sound, instead of just honing chops, the world would be a musically more interesting place. Wow what a rant.
I prefer Dave Mustaine over James ...
I prefer Dave Mustaine over James Hetfield hands down as a metal riffer, i've always prefered Megadeth's riffs, imagine Hetfield trying to cut something like "Holy wars" let alone sing it at the same time like Dave does. Saw megadeth @ the St.James a few years back, it was a great show. Also i wouldn't say that Satriani and Vai never "made it" they'll never be main stream but they've more than made it it my book.
